Mangini can't afford to bench Pennington ... yet

Despite Chad Pennington's struggles in directing the Jets’ stagnant offense, we hear head coach Eric Mangini feels he can’t afford to make a QB change just yet. For starters, he fears that opting for the stronger-armed Kellen Clemens would be viewed as throwing in the towel on the season, something he’s not ready to do at 1-4. More importantly, he can ill-afford to further cripple his already strained relationship with the team. Mangini’s authoritarian coaching style is detested by his players, and benching the well-liked Pennington would be seen as a supreme lack of loyalty. However, insiders tell us that if offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer lobbied for Clemens, he’d likely be successful. And as Schottenheimer has gone from prospective head-coaching candidate to incompetent assistant in the span of five weeks, he may be willing to do just that. In such a scenario, Mangini could save face by saying it was Schottenheimer’s decision, and Schottenheimer doesn’t risk undermining his rapport with players because they don’t have a personal problem with him. But if Pennington remains the starter and the losses continue to mount, it appears to be a foregone conclusion that Clemens will take over QB duties sometime before the end of the season.

Sounds like Mangini is ready to throw Schottenheimer under the bus right now. I hear that they have had to get a bigger team meeting room because everyone on the team wants to sit with their back to the wall because they are getting neck strains checking out their backs for daggers whenever Mangini is in the room.

I can't help but wonder if things would be that insane if the Pats started losing a lot. You'd think that Belichick's 5 SB rings would keep the vultures from second-guessing the coach. But then, Mangini has 3 rings himself.

Oh, you think it was Bill Belichick. Find one article where the players ever questioned Belichick's coaching style or lost faith in Belichick. Other than Tom Jackson's "they hate their coach" in 2003, there was none.

As many in the "McDaniels as a HC candidate" thread made clear, its the Head Coach, not the offensive coordinator, who is ultimately responsible for the play calling.

So even though it's therefore wrong to make shottenheimer the scapegoat, looks like ManJuduas is set to stab another friend and colleague in the back.

Colt fan, but the point is, the first post in this thread detailed thoughts on Mangini, and his coaching prowess. Well, earlier today, someone poted the 2001 reference, where BB was ranked like 30th out of 32 coaches. The book on him at that time sounds similar to what they are saying about Mangini.

Pete Prisco as your source? He should have wrote "I hate Bill Belichick so of course the playerss and media hate him too". This is a guy who predicted the winner of the Super Bowl in the 2004 season would be "anyone but the Patriots". Where is his proof. I never saw a single reporter intimate it or a player say anything publically. Jets player have both this year and last year made comments about Mangini though publically. It is well known that the Jets players didn't accept Mangini's coaching still which is more abrassive than Belichick.

Besides, the Pats won a Super Bowl in Belichick's second year and the Jets aren't going to win the Super Bowl any time soon,

I think the comparison's valid, actually. And it serves to illustrate just how Mangini has gone wrong. He's tried to be a Belichick mini-me in his coaching style, but the style was never the point.

BB succeeds, and he's a hardass. He doesn't succeed because he's a hardass. He succeeds because he works like mad, knows as much about football as anyone alive, and puts his players in position to win. Players buy in because he walks the walk. If you're a hardass without a winning gameplan, you're just a jerk.

Well, Pete Kendall spoke out against Mangini and his practices this preseason. A lot of players spoke on and off the record that they did not like Mangini's coaching during training camp of last year. That died down after they started to win though.

Other than Terry Glenn, no one spoke out about Belichick in the first two years. The Pats players were in a different position though, a large portion of the team had a good deal of exposure to Belichick when he was the Assistant Head Coach during the 1996 season and they were more willing to buy into what he was selling. Very few Jets players had exposure to Mangini either playing under him with the Pats or his tenure with the Jets under Parcells. Beside, Mangini was a glorified peon the last time he was with the Jets.

The Title of the thread is "things could be getting worse for Mangini.....

So, all I am saying is, things were not all rosy for BB in the early years, but he has succeeded. Mangini looks like he is in a similar boat.

That's all, nothing more, nothing less. Just simply making a comparison.

Actually, there are big differences in coaching styles between Mangini and Belichick. People who have observed Jets practices have compared how Mangini runs practice more like Crennel and Parcells than Belichick. Mangini is far more hands on and abrassive in practices while Belichick is more stoic and allows his assistants more leeway to run their squads. Belichick is still a hardass, but he isn't in the players' faces like Mangini (or Crennel or Parcells are/were).

I do admit if Belichick didn't win the Super Bowl either in 2001 or a year after, players would probably have turned on him. But the rumors that players hated the Pats was never like they are about Mangini.
