He was asked about this on sirius nfl today .his response -paraphrasing.

"right now iam not trying look at a specific rule , iam just trying to follow all of them and concentrate on dallas"
his tongue and cheek response had the hosts splitting in laughter.

That is ****ing hilarious. And they say BB is humorless.

Why is that funny? That's how he thinks.

I really don't think BB was trying to be funny.

Funny response.

This rule is going to be scrutinized more and more and I guess you can thank Shanahan for getting the ball rolling. It's always been there but for whatever reason this is a copy-cat league these days and it's probably going to happen again and again. I can see people being livid if it effects the outcome of a playoff game.

I don't know what the real solution is. I'd say a team is allowed to take a timeout if they are trying to stop the clock (the other team is out of time outs, didn't spike the ball and wants to just line up in a hurry) so you have at least the chance of a kick return. But what are you taking a "time out" from if the clock is stopped and you have absolutely no intention of making a substitution before the snap?

Yeah a kicker could benefit if they miss it and then make it but that certainly hasn't been the trend so far.

I don't think the motivation of the coach for calling the time out can be scrutinized. He is entitled to stop the clock before the snap for ANY reason. People are just going to have to get used to this.

i dont see why they should make a rule to change this.. i agree with the above poster.. you can call timeout whenever you want.. part of the game..

The sound bite is even better. You can hear the sarcasm dripping through the radio. It was classic.

It's a tactic. As tactics go, it's not the greatest tactic in the world.

Case in point: da Borez tried this against the Pats last year on Gostkowski's longest kick of the year.

The first time, it was powerful as all get out--and about a yard wide right.

After the TO, Gostkowski nailed the redo.

Lovie Smith --> :bricks:

Exactly. That's why they are available. There should be no additional rules about time outs. Things are fine.

Hopefully the Patriots are never in a situation when BB has to make the decision about doing this.

props to shanahan for thinking this.only he and BB can find holes in these rules of the competition commitee.

This rule is going to come into play during a playoff game this year and there is going to be a huge uproar.

I'm a pretty live and let live type of guy but for some reason this tactic pisses me off. Can you imagine if Martz had pulled this crap in the Superbowl and Vinatieri had to rekick and missed?

The question here is why is the ball being snapped if there is a timeout being called? The refs need to be more proactive and stop the play before the ball is snapped.

I still want an egregious and iincidental PI call.

It's incorrect to say that the rules are no different now. Since last season a coach can call timeout, before that the coaches needed to signal player to do so.

In the case of icing the kicker before a field goal there's a major difference. If a player calls it the ref who grants the timeout is in everyone's field of vision and everyone hears his whistle so usually the play stops and the kicker doesn't need to kick twice. Almost everyone's fine with that, and with the relatively rare case where the player calling the timeout calls it so close that the play still proceeds.

What's different now is that coaches have figured out that they can call the timeout by informing the ref on or near the sidelines and it's almost certain that the players and the rest of the officiating crew won't find out in time to prevent a meaningless kick. The ability to force the kicker to kick twice is what's unfair, and what they must address.

The same thing happens in baseball when the umpire grants a time out to the batter as the pitcher is in motion and it's too late to stop the pitch.

But the ump is not suppose to grant time out if he thinks the pitcher can't stop his wind up in time. Its usually the pitcher who decides to just keep going if the ump makes the decision too close to the end of the wind up or if the pitcher is looking away at the time.

Simple way to change the rule, and it will be changed, is during FG formations the TO can only be called on the field after the FG unit is set. DONE.

Very well said. I have no problems with the team calling a time out before a field goal, but the whole last second stuff by the coach needs to go.
