He dropped the Pats from the top spot after a 17-point win: "You want to hold onto your No.1 spot, then play better." And Brady's 100+ rating and 3 TDs weren't "sharp" enough.

Oddly enough, Dallas apparently played well on Monday night, as they stayed at #3.

frankly i dont have a problem with it.Colts are champs - they deserved to be #1 every week in my opinion until they get beat.
Switch the roles between the pats and colts and we would be saying no respect for the defending champs.

more interestingly his take on the dallas game
OK, let's forget about the Buffalo meltdown. I wrote enough about that the other day. Let's look ahead to 2007's most attractive matchup so far, Cowboys-Patriots. I think New England will open up with multiple wides and test the secondary. I think Dallas will counter by assigning their premier hitter, Roy Williams, mad dog duty on Randy Moss. Double with the cornerback, keep Randy in front of him and then punish him severely when he catches the ball. I saw Green Bay do that to Randy once, with Darren Sharper as the whipper. He knocked Moss groggy, but Randy surprised me that night because he showed he could take the punishment. He was rubber legged at times, but he hung in there and caught his share. If Tony Romo does the interception number again, the contest will be over early, but I don't think it will happen. The line opened at Patriots minus 4 1/2 and I think that's just the way the game will end. New England, 23 1/2, Dallas 19.

Even though Sunday against the Browns was seen as somewhat of an "off-day" comparatively speaking, I'd say we still looked as sharp or sharper than the Colts have for much of the season. And the Colts have looked really good.

Indeed . . . I guess the play better thing doesn't apply to them : "OK, let's forget about the Buffalo meltdown."

(in reference to Dr Z referring to multiple wide sets) - I wonder when we'll see a 4-wide set like we saw employed in last season's Vikings game. There hasn't really been a game plan that needed it and I don't think the Cowboys does either, but I am just curious if that's something we'll see from the Pats this season.

Colts should be #1 until someone rated near them beats them simple as that. They are the champs so end of story.

Oh and be ready to see Randy in motion all game long out of the slot. Williams can't get the big hit if he can't catch him.

Someone "near" them? So, if the Colts were to drop one to, say, Cleveland, they should remain #1 anyway? That makes awesome sense.

They WERE the champs. Last year. Different players. Different team. This is a poll for THIS YEAR. The past shouldnt matter when ranking teams.

Only one power ranking counts...the last one.

I don't mind the Colts being rated number 1, but his reasoning is a little flawed. Just seems inconsistent that's all.

Although I don't care where we are ranked on anyone's Power Rankings after week #5, I think it is a badge of honor for Dr. Z dropping us in his rankings. This is the guy who had the Dolphins going to the Super Bowl last season. This is a guy who consistently gets outpicked by Brooklyn Decker, a Sports Illustrated Swimsuit model, in his weekly She Says, Z Says video spot on SI.com (I watch the video for the articles). Dr. Z has consistently been a horrible team talent evaluator.

This logic is so flawed it's ridiculous. It defeats the entire purpose of power rankings.

If Manning, Harrison, and Wayne all had season ending injuries tomorrow, should the Colts still be at the top of the power rankings until they lose?

He did that because he violated his own rule about ranking teams (see here: http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2007/writers/dr_z/09/19/week2.rankings.part1/index.html). His rule was that the champ stays at #1 until they get beat. CYA

Lame reasoning on the Dr.'s part.

Dr Z is a joke. He might as well rank the best porn movies from the 70's.

i think the dallas pass rush will be a lot to handle compared to what minn brought. Plus it was brad childress as compared to wade phillips. Thats a mismatch right there.
The pats will try and go to their 3-4 wideout sets early and see if they can handle the pass rush .Iam a little worried that it doesnt turn out those miami and pitts games where brady was constantly hit.

everyone is ripping Z for his rankings and rightly so -its meaningless. But if we were colts fans instead of pats fans or more correctly if the pats were defending champs and playing like the colts with injuries and winning and the colts were blowing everyone out -would everyone agree with this ranking or would we turn around and say no respect for defending champs etc .

That's not the point. It's not an argument about having the Pats leapfrog the Colts without the Colts losing. He had the Pats #1, and then dropped them after a 17-point victory.

its a weekly ranking of who HE thought was more impressive in victory. Pats won by more points and colts had more starters out against a better team in tampa which was big for him. I can see his point.

I would argue that the Browns are better than the Bucs, but really, I could care less so "it is what it is."
