Rivers returns
By Mike Reiss, Globe Staff

The Patriots have announced that TE Marcellus Rivers has been re-signed. The team has released veteran LB Chad Brown to make room for Rivers on the 53-man roster.

The move with Rivers was expected when he was released Saturday. At the time, the Patriots needed to address other areas on the 53-man roster for their game against the Browns.

Rivers joins a tight end group that includes Kyle Brady and Benjamin Watson.

Brown, a 15-year NFL veteran, played in one game for the Patriots this season.

'bout time

Re: Per Reiss...Rivers in Chad Brown Out

So does he get paid for 5/16ths of his contract value since he was on the roster for 5 of 16 weeks? Or how does that work?

Re: Per Reiss...Rivers in Chad Brown Out

If you're a veteran and you're on at some point like through the 2nd week, you get paid a full year, I believe.

If someone else picks him up then maybe the Pats don't have to pay anymore.

Back to the shadow roster for Chad...

Re: Per Reiss...Rivers in Chad Brown Out

This move reads pound the run and get Randy in that new 3 TE 1 WR formation for some deep stuff.

Exactly what I was thinking. Another benefit to winning - especially being undefeated so far - is that guys who get cut, if told to "stay close," will do so. They want a ring. They want to be part of something special.

Tenured vets ... no! not ten-yeared vets :) ... on the opening day roster
are guaranteed full year's salary.
Chad Brown had been cut ... was not on the opening day roster (on purpose, of course)
... and soon re-signed for the spot duty/presence he has served.

He has received 5 weekly checks ... 5/17ths of his annual.

He will be needed by the end of the season, for a 3-4 team the Patriots are very thin at LB. He is not great or even good but as a 4th or 5th option at either LB position we could do worse.

I expect he will be back when \ if Maroney and Faulk are at full health.

Once in his career, a veteran player who was on the roster during the first game can elect to receive his remaining salary as severance pay.

BB pays attention to these things, and tries to avoid having veterans on his roster during week 1 who he thinks may get cut.

Brown was signed AFTER week 1 and is therefore not eligible for this severance pay.

I agree, I hope we see some of that. So far, the 1 wideout set with Moss has been very productive.

The Cowboys are giving up about 80 rushing YPG, I don't think that the game plan will call for a lot of 3 TE sets. If fact the opposite, Dallas's secondary is not their strength, I expect the Patriots to run a balanced attack but the majority of the game plan will call for an air attack.

Exactly, a players contract is paid out in 16 equal game-checks, so he would have received 5 of them.

Actually it's paid in 17 installments (they get paid during the bye week), and since he wasn't on the roster for week 1 he will have gotten 4/17ths of his contract to date.

Re: Per Reiss...Rivers in Chad Brown Out

I would like to see Pierre get some snaps if he is suppose to be part of our youth in the LB movement I'd like to see him at least get some action on 3rd down where he can just use his natural ability and go after the qb.
As far as Chad Brown it is what it is he was a great LB in his prime very knowledgeable of the 3-4 concepts, and won't make alot of mental mistakes.
Obviously his skill set is a mere fraction of what it was but BB digs chiseled veterans and he definitely one of those.

Re: Per Reiss...Rivers in Chad Brown Out

I am a big Woods fan and it seemed like he was making strides during training camp before an injury. I don't agree with putting him out there for meaningful snaps to basically see what he can do. We are playing for a championship and gameday is not a good time for experimenting. The coach's get enough looks at a guy during practice to have an idea of how that would translate to game conditions. If they felt Woods could provide something to third down situations or something I'm sure he would be involved in those packages. Right now he is best served as a core special teamer (where he excels) and depth on the outside.

Re: Per Reiss...Rivers in Chad Brown Out

Great analysis there on woods, I guess I just would like to know what we have before we go into free agency and the draft with Woods this kid could be something special.
As far as the analysis of you see em in training camp and practice so you know what you have.
I don't have to look far for an example.
Mike Vrabel was a lost man on a big depth chart in Pittsburgh that started looking like a stockpile of LB riches.
BB took a flier on him and once he got on the field he exceeded everyones expectations.
I guess I just wanna see what we have with this guy now that he has all world coaching and rolemodels all around him.
Carr's a joke in Michigan and Pierre has all world talent good to see he caught on with my team cause I think this guys ceiling is as high as say a Colvin or Peterson and as low as Monty Biesel jk.

Re: Per Reiss...Rivers in Chad Brown Out

When Troy is eligible to come off the PUP he's going to be added to the revolving door IMO - on the team one week, off the next, depending on health of WRs, DBs and special teamers.

Re: Per Reiss...Rivers in Chad Brown Out

I think due to Troy Brown's longevity with the team and the respect the patriots have for him I dont think he will another Rivers/Chad Brown where they activate him one week and cut him the next.

In regards to Woods I def. agree I would like to see something from him in terms of defense. Hopefully we have a nice lead and have locked up a bye by week 14 or 15 (may be wishful thinking) and we can give the Woods/Alexander/Cassel/Eckel's some extended playing time!

Re: Per Reiss...Rivers in Chad Brown Out

This is a very predictable resigning as Rivers was signed for two years, Chad Brown leaving is not as obvious. He may remain on the 60 man "shadow roster".
