Stallworth Reverse

Anyone think the Stallworth reverse was run deliberately for him in that situation to pump his spirits back up?

He had just dropped a ball on third down that would have meant points, and they gave him the ball on the first play after they got the ball back. We don't usually do sentimental stuff. (Like Belichick doesn't seem to ever believe that if a running back breaks a 30 yard run to the one foot line that he "deserves" the next carry to try to score.)

Just coincidence, or delberate, I wonder.

ithe drop wasnt that bad..he was covered and he was probably thinking how how to squeeze through 2-3 defenders but no i think we just ran it because its a play of ours. did the Watson reverse try to his his spirits back up? if his confidence drops like that(which i doubt it did) then he shouldnt be playing here.

The drop was that bad...

I think we playcall based on down, distance and coverage and not sentiment. Stallworth was the 4th read on his TD. Thing is Brady is pretty good about continuing to give guys opportunities - some QB's get pretty pissy and refuse to go back to guys who disappoint them. I think from what BB is saying these guys are all showing well in practice, so the foundation to get past an occasional in game drop is there. Especially for a player like Stallworth who can do a lot after the catch.

Stallworth was out there for 49/70 snaps which is good to see. To win the Super Bowl we'll need all these weapons, Moss, Stallworth, Watson, Welker, the RB so it's good that Stallworth is finally flashing and making defenses aware of him.

However he's not a great hands guy like Moss. He drops some - he lets the ball into his body which causes more drops. He is what he is and that's a big play WR who makes a great #2 WR - but he's going to drop some; that's who he is.

I fully beleive that Belichick self scouts. If he did, he would see that Stallworth or the opposite Wr to Moss, was not getting many catches or even throws to him.

To remove that easy assumption, I beleive the Pats entered this game to highlight Stallworth.

They certainly tried to do so.

The Pats threw at him at least 9 times but completed only four. It seemed that Brady was holding the ball purposely waiting for Stallworth, ignoring other possibilities, to break open, before throwing it to him.

Three were scoring type throws. The pass to the two yard line, could be a body spin for a score, the deep crossing route if caught would have probably gone for score, and there was a deep throw that was too long, but if caught would have allowed him to run away from the defender.

Ironically, the one scoring pass was not a TD expectation type throw, but required a lot of juking and a long YAC. In some ways it demonstrated that Stallworth could be dangerous in the shorter game as well.

Does anyone else feel that the Pats were consciously trying to involve Stallworth and balance their Offense, making it more difficult for opponents to plan a defense against them?

That's what I said when they ran it. I don't know if sentimentality enters into it, but it's to everyone's advantage to show one of your star receivers that you have faith in him.

If they want to get Moss in single coverage ever again, they HAVE to get Stallworth involved more. This week was a good start.
