We're coming up on the trade deadline and there were more WR injuries around the league today. With Chad Jackson potentially able to come back and with the top 3 of Moss, Stallworth and Welker, I could see the Pats possibly shopping Gaffney to a team like the Browns, who may have lost Jurevicious for awhile or to the Seahawks, who had Branch go down. Or even the Bengals...

If we can trade him, I do. I said a few weeks ago that he, and not Washington, could be the odd man out if the PUPed WR are ready to come back. We won't be paying Washington what his contract says but by keeping him around we'll get the chance to sign him to a new deal.

With the uncertainty of Moss for next year we need to keep Stallworth, Washington, Jackson around to consider new deals for the first two should it be necessary.

I'd love to see them trade him but I doubt it. (That said..."Dear Texans....") I think what's more likely is that CJ goes on IR, isn't happy about it, but deals. Not sure about Troy. I hope he's back and that allows us to trade someone.

Nope. There is no guarantee if he does come off PUP that Chad can execute well enough in the passing game at NFL speed to replace Gaffney who may not be getting utilized much barring injury but has shown he has the capacity to replace the #2 when he's asked to. This time of year there aren't enough reps to go around to compensate for all the reps CJ's already missed. No way Bill trades away anything worth trading for. Besides the Puppies don't have to be activated until prior to week 9 and added to the roster or IR or cut until prior to week 12.

If Jackson comes off PUP and gets added to the roster it will be at the expense of a ST player. And the last time they used him on ST he got hurt. Brown projects better value to the 2007 team if healthy because of his experience and versatility. It will be interesting to see if Jackson's representation pushes for activation. If they do it may not sit well with the FO.

Yes, Gaffney's 3-4 plays a game is really going to make a difference maker...

And, thank you for pointing out that Chad would be playing special teams. That is specifically why Gaffney would be traded. Cause Jackson can play special teams and gaffney doesn't.

No, not really. While Moss has a pretty good track record regarding injuries, Stallworth does not. Gaffney knows the offense and we saw last year in the playoffs that he's reliable so he's being kept as cover. Jackson is not ready.

If Stallworth or Moss goes down CJ playing ST isn't going to be much consolation.

Are you sure this is right?

I know that players can be activated between weeks 6 and 9, but I believe the three-week window starts after week 6, and that evalaution and deciding must be done by week 9.

There was a thread a while back that talked about getting 2nd or 3rd round picks for him and someone else. Washington, maybe. Or Caldwell. I forget, and I doubt they are worth that much, but if we can get any pick at all, we ought to grab it. I'd rather trade Washington than Gaffney because Chad Jackson will easily replace Washington for less money (both play special teams, and both have the same number of receptions so far this year).

A slightly related question is:

If Jackson sees no playing time this year, is the bright career that we envisioned 14 months ago over? I'd think that missing (essentially) 2 years out of college has to have a significant long term impact on his development.
Think about it, at the 3 year mark, many of our draft picks have become significant, established players. For him, going into year three (assuming he's healthy) will be like a rookie year.

I would rather see Jackson get a spot on the roster (for his long term development) than to see him get cast aside this season.

I do agree though, if an injury were to happen to Moss/Stallworth/Welker, I'd rather see Jaffney pick up the slack than CJ this year.

So its really a matter of short-term safety net (Jaffney) vs long term benefit (Jackson).

If this is the teams biggest problem right now, I think its a great problem to have.

If Caldwell wasn't worth anything in September I doubt Washington would be worth anything this week. BB has been very complimentary about his WR corps based on what they show in practice. I don't think he parts with anyone although Washington might have to go if CJ has to be added. He has to get through 3 weeks of practice first, though.

This is from Miguel's page:

Q:What is PUP??
A: My answer is based on a NFL.Com article on Curtis Martin being placed on PUP in 2006. A player who fails his club's pre-season physical at the start of training camp may be placed on the club's Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list. A player on PUP is eligible to receive his salary, but is ineligible for games and practices; he is, however, allowed to attend team meetings. According to the article, "According to NFL rules, a player on the PUP list can't be cleared to practice until after Week 6. The Jets now have three weeks to decide whether to allow Martin to start practicing. Once he's cleared to practice, the team would have three weeks from that date to either place him on the active roster or put him on injured reserve and end his season."

It's a tough call. Mo is right that if Moss or Stallworth were to get hurt for a while we could really use Gaffney. However with him being a FA at the end of the year, Moss also, and Stallworth and Washington being signed to options that we're unlikely to pick up, if Jackson is healthy then helping him continue to progress should be well worth it. Most likely we'd keep them all and cut someone like Chad Brown. Although Troy Brown might be coming back too.

Jackson's development gets delayed but he's still a very talented kid. I expect, timing-wise, it works out pretty well for him to step in in 2008 when Stallworth and others may be elsewhere. Not ideal but it'll have to do. And a TON of WRs contribute next to nothing until year 3.

I would rather win a Superbowl. Now, activating CJ and winning a Superbowl may not be mutually exclusive, but his development definitely takes a back seat to the 2007 team goal. Besides he won't get many reps as a WR even in practice let alone in games if he's activated to replace the 5th WR on this team. Washington and Caldwell couldn't crack this unit even with a full year and a full camp and a couple of years NFL experience. He may or may not have more talent than they do, but he's never even had a full NFL camp in two seasons, so all he represents is unrealized potential.

Gaffney won't be a FA until next March. A lot can happen between now and then. I'm not convinced Moss or Stallworth will necessarily be leaving either. They've both been around and seen what's out there. And they seem happy here. Stallworth might have to rework his deal if Randy stays, but stranger things have happened.

Seahawks for a #1.:D

Jackson has never been through a Pats training camp, hasn't practiced in nine months, and contributed nothing last year.

The Pats will redshirt him on IR and give him a shot next summer.

Obviously that would appear to be the best course of action for the team. Teambuilding is a process and they are six months into it for the 2007 team without him. He was PUPed as insurance against catastrophic injuries at the position, but those haven't happened (knock on wood) through the first 5 weeks and hopefully that won't change through at least week 12.

I think what has some people wondering is the fact that his agent was vocal this summer about wanting him on the field/roster this season. But that didn't influence them on PUP. He can always grieve their decisions, but you would think even threatening to play that card to force their hand on roster construction at midseason would not bode well for his long term prospects here.

Others just get hung up on draft and potential values. While this FO always keeps an eye on the future, they primarily focus on living in the present as well as possible once the season commences. The only way they make changes in the WR unit now is if someone isn't showing them in practice that they could contribute this season and someone else is available who shows them that they could. Ditto end of roster spots as well (where experience and versatility would appear to give TB a leg up on activation if healthy). Bill has mentioned Gaffney by name along with Moss, Stallworth and Welker, as having shown well in practice. Apparently even Washington is contributing well on the scout team. He says the entire unit is something to watch in practice. Fans don't get to see that, and are really limited to assessing performance based on how game plans unfold and whose number gets called based on coverages from week to week and team to team.

Agreed. If Gaffney could pull a day 1 pick I'd say go for it. But what kind of value could Gaffney seriously bring in a trade? A 5th round pick maybe? Is it worth risking a depleted WR corps should injuries strike for a 5th round pick?

3 TDs does not to help us last year right? hes running, hes training on his own and with team trainers to get back on the field. if they wanted to IR him and there was no chance he comes back this year, then we would've done so earlier in the season instead of putting him on PUP.

Hes well ahead of schedule. Hes feeling great, says hes been reading the playbook a lot and hes understanding the offense .

last year he didnt get n the field because he didnt know the plays/offense. if he does..watch out.
Jackson had surgery to repair the injured joint in the offseason and completely missed what would have been his second training camp. Jackson was placed on the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list before the start of the season. Considering the possible future implications and heavy duty competition at receiving positions, it would be understandable if Jackson was becoming impatient.

"No, not at all," Jackson said. "I'm being patient, standing back and staying in the playbook. I'm just staying focused on what I need to do. I have a few more weeks to go. Hopefully I'll get out and contribute to the team."

Jackson's eligible to come off of PUP after Week 6. Jackson's agent, David Canter, feels that his client has made remarkable strides during summer and will be back to full health when they hit the deadline.

"The strongest football team in the NFL gets stronger in three weeks," Canter said. "He's very excited about being able to get out there with the guys. He's healthy."

Can you stop with the excuses. Jackson is at least a year away from doing anything worth while in this system.
