Does anyone else think Bill/Josh are going for the 48TD record?

Last game they threw a garbage time TD to Moss.
This week, they tried to throw TD passes in garbage time (instead of running it with backups).

Is it simply a matter of not quitting? Trying to say F You to the league? Or are they actually gunning for the record?

After today, I have to say that they where going for an extra touchdown for some reason.

I wish they ran up the score more often. It works for me.

i thought record was 49 ..not 48

I think a few things are going on, but not a record-chase.

1) In the past, I think BB really thought "screw running up the score. a W is a W." I think now it's a matter of leaving no doubt. In the past, he put the game out of reach, and let the Defense make the point, whereas now we'll take what they give us - and we'll take it for 60 minutes.

2) I don't know what that transition is, exactly. Maybe the trust that even in a disasterous 14-point swing situation (like that Bailey pick against Denver,) we're in front by enough and we have the firepower to make it okay.

3) A big FU to the league...? Um, maybe sorta. I think BB saw the overreaction around the league. I think if it has an impact it's a subtle thing. But if there was any "noblesse oblige" about running up a score, I think he's past that now.

I don't think he wants to get sidetracked with stats and records... very unBelichickian. I think whatever's going on has to do with winning football games.

Just one man's opinion,

It was a record chase. The Pats are now the only team in history to win their first 5 games by 17 or more points. If they didn't score that last TD they wouldn't have done it. So yeah they were record chasing.

You guys are way off base here.

Up by 10 with 2 minutes left, a FG does not end the game, a TD does. After running down the clock as much as they could with the run, they chose to try to end the game - let's say the pass play had a 50% chance of succeeding, with an unsuccessful play resulting in Cleveland starting at their own 5 needing two scores - instead of kicking the FG, which would've kept it a two score game, and necessitated a kickoff to Cribbs, who they obviously deeply fear.

IMO, this is in line with what the Pats have been doing throughout the season - not messing around, finishing teams off. There is nothing mean-spirited or vengeful about it, just brutal efficiency at work.

Nice post. I agree.

I think the only thing BB is trying to do is win games.

I know that he would never do anything that would get in the way of that primary objective but he did let Flutie drop kick that field goal. I think if Brady or Moss is close at the end of the year to some kind of major record he'd go for it, but you'd never really be sure that's what he's doing.

I think Brady may be going for the record but more importantly I think he is going for a SB.

along the way I think he may get an MVP too...

At least a few people get it.

Pretty ob Bill is the reason for all evil in this world. Just ask the jets/colts/steelers/bengals/panthers/eagles and rams.

No, if they were then Brady wouldn't be sitting out the end of most of the games. They only passed for the end zone because they were going to turn it over on downs anyway.

If they were going for it then they wouldn't have run Kyle Eckel right up the middle 3 straight times before that.

That's certainly a unique take on it.

Hey, Look who crawled out of the woodwork.

As for it being a unique take on it, no, its not. By going for the TD on 4th down instead of kicking a FG and having to kick, at worst the Pats turn the ball over and don't have to kick to Josh Cribbs.

If they get the TD, then kicking to Cribbs doesn't matter since it would be a 17 point lead. With not enough time left for the Browns to get 17 points.

There is absolutely NO WAY whatsoever that McDaniels and Belichick "are going for the record." They're trying to win football games and THAT'S IT. It's a silly notion that is in direct contrast with what Belichick and the entire organization is, and has been, about.

After thinking about it some more...

I would have to agree that a 10 (or 13pt) lead isnt necessarily safe. Its very improbable to score 14 points in 50 seconds, but still could happen.

Also, maybe last years playoffs loss to the Colts taught BB that no lead is safe...

But I'd also have to agree with Porco...If they were trying to finish the game off, why'd they run with Eckel instead of Morris? Morris gives you the best probability of getting into the endzone on the ground. Faulk gives you the second best. Evans the third best.

Really doesnt make a whole lot of sense. Either they were trying to kill time (in which case the last pass instead of another run makes no sense) , or they were trying to score (in which case having Eckel makes no sense)
