With 2 minutes left, this game was clearly over. 10 point lead.

Right after the 2 minute warning, Brady throws for Watson in the endzone. We get that defensive penalty. Then it looks like instead of kneeling they are going to get Eckle some work, which is fine. Romeo feels threatened; starts calling timeouts. Then the Pats bring in their LB which I used to think was a goaline big game rarity - but probably not necessary for garbage time.

Then the Pats take a TO. Instead of kneeling or kicking a FG, they throw for the endzone on 4th down! Then Gay makes a pick and returns it?!? Then Romeo runs his team out there down to the very end to try and score.

In my opinion, they should have kneeled coming out the 2 minute warning or just run Eckle if they really wanted to get him so work. In return, I am sure the Browns would have not called their timeouts and probably kneeled themselves when they go the ball back with about 30 seconds left.

And we all missed the back to back home runs because of this nonsense.

Belichick respected Crennel by going for it. What does BB always talk about? SITUATIONAL FOOTBALL. BB knew that Crennel wanted to see what his red-zone D was made of, and BB was honest about going for 6.

I agree it was stupid that the Pats threw for the endzone when a FG ended it.

i read somewhere else also last week...going for FG is disrespectful i would think, by going for it on 4th down he as giving browns D to stop them

16.5 point spread... Belichick and Crennel had money on the game?

Situational football? If you actually but merit in this (which I dont), please note that a field goal makes forces the Browns to score two touchdowns instead of a touch and a field goal which makes them go possibly an extra 40 yards.

I see but still they could have just run it. I don't see the need to try for the TD.

If you kick the FG, assuming it's made, you then have to kick-off to Cribbs who looked dangerous all day. I agreed with the call, but the execution was a tad weak.

Don't watch it then...

Not sure if these two comments are really related. He was talking about two situations: defending a FG, and defending a TD pass in the end zone. The latter is far more useful to a team, in a real game situation, than the former, I would think.

The "End of the Game" is a pretty simple concept.

It is actually pretty similar to "the beginning of the game" except that it is the exact opposite and instead of the game just starting, it is just about to finish.

At the end of the game the teams run their plays just like at any other point of the game, but at the end, the time is running out and there is almost a sense of urgency. That is one of the great things about the "end of the game". It's almost as if everything is more important b/c you don't necessarily get a "second chance".

So both teams continue to run their plays as the clock runs out and then when the clock reaches 0, the game is over (unless the last play has a defensive penalty).

I hope you now have a better understanding of the end of the game.

Browns had two timeouts... I don't see how you can just kneel on the ball with the other team having 2 TO's still. If you kick the FG on 4th down and hit, it's still a 13 point (TWO possesion) game and you have to kickoff either to a dangerous KR, or squib and lose field position that way. So the bit about 40 yards of field position lost by not trying to make it a two touchdown game isn't terribly accurate. I think the Pats played that perfectly, actually -- run the ball three times and take a shot at PA on fourth when the clock will stop regardless of the outcome.

Exactly, you only kneel when you can run out the clock to 0:00, nothing less.

win win situation

a. if u kick A FG..your up only 13 with a minute left and u gotta kickoff to their biggest threat

b. you score, up 17 and kickoff to their biggest threat

c. if u dont make it,make it, you make them go 96 yards with no timeouts left

The losing team kneeling the ball to end a game? I don't think that ever happened in the history of the NFL.

Actually, BB just wanted to put another 30 point game in the books:D

Yeah, losing teams don't usually kneel out the clock, unless it's at the end of the first half. But the end of the game? Why not go for it?

I don't get why people say the game was over. 10-13 points is two scores. A fluke touchdown, and onside kick recovery and suddenly you're sweating bullets. Why even give them the chance? Had it been three scores or more, I would agree that they didn't need to go for it, but I would have preferred they were even more aggressive and just slammed the door shut on any chance for the Browns to come back on them. Not likely either way, but I'll take no chance over a slight one.

there's also another view, that maybe it would kill time by not kicking a field goal. plus, they were up by a good margin with the amount of time that was left, what's wrong with a little confidence?

I don't consider 10 points a good amount, personally. 15+ and I'm happy, because the lead is safe.
