The News
The 49ers won't have Alex Smith under center for a long time. The quarterback told the San Francisco Chronicle that he expects to miss "several weeks" with the Grade 3 separation of his throwing shoulder that he suffered on Sunday. No surgery is planned right now, but the team will know more about his condition on Thursday.

Our View
Trent Dilfer will start in Smith's place, and that is bad news for an already shaky passing attack. Dilfer managed only 128 yards and threw a pair of picks against the Seahawks, and things won't be any easier this week against the Ravens.

Top 15 pick? But would we end up trading such a pick?

I want top 10. I want to then TRADE the top 10 for a later #1 and a future #1, just so BB can, once again, tell the NFL to F off.

They'll win more games without Smith than with him. No QB comes back from a separated shoulder in the same season and lives to tell about it.

Both Bledsoe and Brady suffered shoulder woes. Brady in 2002, Bledsoe in 1999.

Not good.

Hopefully teams won't let up on the 49ers just b/c they think it'll be easier to beat them with Dilfer under center.

Not if Ken Phillips is on the board :) Emagine replacing Rodney and Eugene with Meriweather and Phillips? Sick!!

I still like Rey Maualuga by the way.

Who knows, we'll do what makes sense on the board - but the higher the better, clearly, whether it's used or traded.

move back into the twenties, grab a second rounder, that would make up for the one we lost, and we wont have to pay millions to sign him in the teens

They play this week against Baltimore but then have their bye week at the right time.

Yes, but we get those high first rounders for six years instead of five.

Darren McFadden. I know he'll be a top 3 pick, but I think the niners can stink it up enough.

McFadden is predicted to be the best RB taken since LT.

Dilfer is an able body at QB still. It's not like they have Rex Grossman as their backup QB. Trent actually WON a SB, looking good in the process. I always liked him, having great sympathy for him and his family after the loss of his son.

I just selfishly hope he loses every game. Sorry Trent, nothing personal.

If we get a top 3 pick, we should be looking to trade it for multiple firsts and other picks. Look at what San Diego did with both the Michael Vick trade and the Eli Manning trade - those two trades basically built that roster. Trade the pick for a top 12 or so 1st rounder, a second and third, and a first and fourth the next year, or something along those lines. That would allow for a massive restocking of an already deep roster with talent that would fortify the team for Superbowl run after Superbowl run. If the Niners turn out to be really bad, and the team plays it right, this team could seriously have a shot at 6 titles or so this decade.

I am thinking pick 5-8 is actually looking realistic at this point, but yeah, pick three might be possible! :rocker:

Sorry, but this is California Dreaming. Remember, the SF Draft Forecaster is set at #18 so far.

Sun 10/7 Baltimore 4:15 pm - should be a loss
bye
Sun 10/21 at NY Giants 1:00 pm - loss
Sun 10/28 New Orleans 4:15 pm - if NO ever turns it around...
Sun 11/4 at Atlanta 1:00 pm - ATl playing better, loss
Mon 11/12 at Seattle 8:30 pm -loss
Sun 11/18 St. Louis 4:15 pm - win, St. Louis may be worse than SF
Sun 11/25 at Arizona 4:05 pm - loss
Sun 12/2 at Carolina 1:00 pm - loss
Sun 12/9 Minnesota 4:05 pm - win
Sat 12/15 Cincinnati 8:15 pm - Cinci should win... loss
Sun 12/23 Tampa Bay 8:15 pm - as it looks now, loss
Sun 12/30 at Cleveland 1:00 pm - loss

That makes them 5-11 or 4-12. Smith's injury is huge, and if Gore cannot withstand the attention he is going to see, this could be worse. They are lucky to have the wins they currently have. By no means am I wishing an injury, or predicting one, but that team has little talent on "O" and Gore will be worked hard.

This pick could be top 5, looks to be definitely top 10. A team may want to trade up to grab one of the top QB's, so I predict a trade down. Pick up Lauranaitis later in rd. 1 and then use the extra picks to draft an additional LB and CB.
