Josh McDaniels Appreciation Thread

Time to give this guy major kudos for his work so far this season. Last year he was bashed weekly for inadequecies in the offense eventhough he clearly didn't have the weapons. A lot of people were unwilling to discount the offensive problems we had a times to the fact that our WR corp consisted of Reche Caldwell and not much else for most of the year and our lead back was Corey Dillon who clearly lost a step and didn't have the stamina to play into the second half in a lot of games.

I can't see how any coordinator could have done a much better job than McDaniels has done this year. Yes, Moss is a freak, Welker is an incredible addition, Morris has far exceeded everyone's expectations, the o-line is blocking better than they ever had, and Brady is playing at a completely different level than the rest of the league; but you gotta think McDaniels has a lot to do with all of this. How many times have you questioned a call this year? How many times have we had to punt this year?

I think many of the people who trashed McDaniels last year (and it wasn't just NEM) owe him a huge apology. The guy has been incredible this year.

My concern with McDaniels is whether we're having to replace him in February. At this rate he is going to be a hot, hot HC candidate at the end of the season. I have nothing but good things to say about him but I never once bashed him last year.

I'm still not totally convinced on his playcalling, but I will say he does have all the talent on offense that any OC could dream for.

He's not messing up, which is good, but let's all remember Norv Turner was hailed as an offensive God, and we now realize it was because he was loaded on the offensive line, at RB, at WR, and at QB with the Cowboys.

Wouldn't be surprised if there's a certain NJ area team that would be willing to throw millions of $ his way in the near future.

In a funny way we should be rooting against Crennel and Weiss (Mangina is a given) so that the perception becomes that it's all Belichick. I'm still rooting for Weis though.

Yes! That was the perfect time to reverse and take advantage of the defense's focus. The long series of rushing plays against a worn and depleted 2nd-half defense was pretty nifty too.

Granted that it's easy to look good with good players, the situational mix of plays has been hard to fault.

Then you gotta give him credit for doing a pretty good job without any talent last year. If this year it is all about the talent on the field, so was last year. Our leading WR last year couldn't even make the final cut this year. That means McDaniels had to have done a masterful job to make that team a top ten offense.

BB in his post game conf specificly mentioned the great job by the OC last night. When I saw the reverse to The Wanker for 20 yards I thought that Josh called the right play in just the right situation. The Cats were teeing off at Brady and nothing like a long gainer reverse to cool the mindless pass persuit.

My one question regarding last night's play calling... why did the Pats wait till the 4th quarter to utilize play action passes. Brady was feeling the heat in the first half and I felt play action would take some pressure off him.

Maybe it is just me...but did the Bengals offense last night look a lot like the Pats of last year? They could move the ball (especially when they got into a rhythm) but it just seemed like it was a tremendous effort to get down the field. Getting 9 1/2 yards instead of a first down. Forcing the ball to a limited set of targets. Frustrated quarterback (body language). Letting good defenses control the tempo. Some success running but it disappears at times when you need it.

Credit to McDaniels and Brady for an amazing effort to running a very successful offense last year. This year, everything seems methodical and efficient...almost machine-like. They dictate the flow from the opening snap and press...and press...and press...until the defense is just worn out mentally by the 4th quarter.

The Pats could have won all 4 games by getting into the high 20's and sitting on the lead. They have made a late effort to get into the 30's and I think it is intentional. If you want to beat the Pats, you are going to have to get into the mid to high 30's...no matter what defense you throw at them.

Peyton can handle that kind of pressure, which makes the Colts game so special. What about Romo? Or McNair? Or Roethlisberger? If they don't have 1st quarter success against the Pats D, you have to think they will try to force things and here come the turnovers.

I think BB has given McDaniels the mission to attack, attack, attack. Set the tone now and get opposing teams off their game before kickoff. Sorry Romeo. You're up.

No. Only when he played for the Phins and I named our nemisis that. I was exctatic when we traded a #2 for him. Remember all the cretins here who whined over adding a 7th round pick to clear that deal? Those were the real Wankers!

McDaniels is like BB in some ways, both were interested in coaching and understanding the game at an extremely young age. Both are smart beyond their years.

What NEM failed to realize is that McDaniels was stuck with the same limited talent on the field (or rookie and/or developing talent) that Brady was stuck with. I would blame the front office/BB for what went on last year, before I would blame McDaniels. The FO supplied the talent that we saw on the field. Not trying to say that last year wasn't pretty damn good, because it was. Just not quite good enough.

Also, McDaniels is still learning the ropes to some degree. When you call all the plays, you will never be right every time. McDaniels seems to be getting pretty good at what he does, at a young age, and our biggest concern right now will be how soon the Jets offer him a coaching job....

McDaniels has a promising career ahead of him.

What never made sense to me was that people would blame JM and not BB and complain about the same "deficiencies" week in and week out. You'd think that if the critics were right (e.g., "what we need is more play action") that BB would have stepped in and rectified it if he agreed with the critics?

It always struck me last year that going after JM was just a way to blame the coaches, avoid blaming the players, and avoid blaming BB.

I doubt TB is much better if at all this year over last year. Here's why Tb is so great -- when he has great talent, he looks great. When he has weaker talent, he can still do well enough to win SB 36 and come within a first down of SB 41.

Brady likes to see the field, and he really likes shotgun. Also, they had not shown the Bengals at the start that they even had a running game worth respecting, with the lead back on the bench and Morris still a back-up in most people's minds. I think play action would have made the situation worse, potentially, until they at least established Morris.

They started the game in a way that made Brady comfortable, and then changed up a little when it was clear that it wasn't working out perfectly.

I think they will tailor most of their game plans to Brady and how he wants to run the pass attack.

Let's not forget that this team went to the AFCCG last year with a #1 WR who got cut last year. Josh called plays last year to fit the personnel that he had.

This year he is calling the plays to fit the personnel that he has. It's the same guy. It's the same guy that BB thought enough of to hire him as OC.

I think that this shows that those who were constantly bashing him last year didn't know what they were talking about. These people think that you can just call certain types of plays regardless of the player that you have.

He will never call a perfect game. No OC that ever lived called a perfect game.

I never bashed him and I don't think he's calling anything different this year except what the personnel allows.

BB decides how the offense is run.
