Obviously Patriots fans know who Reggie Nelson is. Had Jax not drafted him, many believe he and not Meriwhether would be on this roster. We will wait and see how this pans out. Does seem ironic though with all the character concerns on Brandon.

Per Profootballtalk.com

REPORT: REGGIE NELSON AT SCENE OF GAINESVILLE SHOOTING
WCJB-TB reports that Jacksonville Jaguars safety Reggie Nelson "was at the scene and may have witnessed" a shooting in Gainesville on early Sunday morning.
Per the report, 28-year old Corey Smith and 19-year old Justin Glass were sitting in traffic on University Avenue in Gainesville when a man approached the car and shot both of them. Glass was shot in the arm, and Smith is in critical condition with a gunshot wound to the head.
Nelson apparently was in town for the Auburn-Florida game, which ended roughly three hours before the incident. His NFL team was off on Sunday.
Nelson was the Jaguars' first-round pick in the 2007 draft.
To be as clear as our in-house legal department (i.e., me) wants us to be, there is no evidence linking Nelson to any crime. The report from WCJB is only that Nelson "was at the scene and may have witnessed" the incident. But this is the Ray Lewis-style incident that we mentioned earlier in the day, since Lewis was "at the scene and may have witnessed" a double-murder in January 2000.

I'm not sure I buy that. Nelson was supposedly not very smart, both IQ and also lacking in football smarts. I like the way he plays but a complex defense wasn't really a good fit for him.

Re: OT: Reggie Nelson at Scene

This has absolutely nothing to do with Reggie Nelson as a person.

1) The report itself underlines that Nelson was merely a witness in the same traffic area and MAY have witnessed it. He was there for the Auburn-Florida game and was in his car leaving said game. He was probably as innocent as any of the other witnesses in the other cars at this brazen crime.

Let's not go making any character judgements or comparing him with Brandon Meriwether based on this story.

And that's our totally irresponsible innuendo filled report from PFT.

Ray Lewis style incident. (double murder)-

Or

there is no evidence linking Nelson to any crime

All in the same paragraph.

Re: OT: Reggie Nelson at Scene

2) Before the draft, if I recall correctly (I know, complete opposite from what Belichickfan just wrote), Nelson was talked about as being one of the most mature, level-headed and smart prospects available last spring.
There's a thread here :

http://www.patsfans.com/new-england-patriots/messageboard/showthread.php?t=54009&highlight=nelson

with a quote from a scout on it. Also Pro Football Weekly was very down on his football smarts saying they had to dumb down and simplify his role.

It may not be correct but he was definitely not considered smart coming out.

NFL Draft Scout liked his instincts and field smarts but, again, weren't sure about his learning a complicated playbook :

"Instinctive player who is field smart, but has had academic difficulties and might struggle trying to digest a complicated playbook"

By contrast, the AOL sports section on the same report from the same TV station. It also has a link to the actual report.

Curiously, neither the actual report nor the AOL story reference Ray Lewis or double murders.

http://sports.aol.com/fanhouse/2007...on-could-be-a-witness-in-gainesville-shootin/

Gainesville Police say the shooting happened at 2:30 a.m., while the victims were sitting in traffic in a busy area, so there are likely many witnesses. So far, however, few witnesses have come forward.

Nelson is named as a witness only. There is no indication that Nelson was involved in the shooting.

It's increasingly clear that Florio is rooting for NFL players to get in trouble and is disappointed when they don't. He practically weeps when his little "turd watch" goes too long without a tick mark. So far, this one looks like he's getting a little desperate. He's not just saying "where there's smoke there's fire," he's saying "if you see smoke you probably set somebody on fire."

Since we can read the report he's basing his slander on and a responsible report from AOL (rotoworld is also careful to mention there were many possible witnesses, it's a college town and the bars just let out) It is obvious the slimy methods Florio has sunk to these days.

Notice while neglecting key elements to make his "story" seem more sensational, he is sure to mention his lawyers. I imagine he recruits them from the Enquirer so he knows exactly how to smear with innuendo while still being legally defensible.

Even if this guy is guilty as sin, the reporting of PFT is beyond disgrace.

Ah, you got that before I had time to edit my original post. Yup, you're right - Nelson's not a genius -Ii must've been thinking of someone else.

I don't believe Reggie would be on the Patriots if not for Jax, since I didn't want him prior to the draft and said Meriweather would be the better pick (for the Patriots).
