I know I know.:bricks:

He is a fan favorite, will probably go in Patriots Hall of Fame if there is one. But, the guy is too old. And with the current roster of speedy wide receivers (Moss, Stallworth, Gaffney, Welker) and others currently on PUP/injured list (Chad Jackson, Washington) we cannot and should not make a roster spot available for Brown. I would say to put him on the practice squad, but I don't know if that is a possibility for a veteran as seasoned as he is. He might view it as an insult.

And don't get me started on Bruschi... :bricks: :bricks:

What do you think?

At this point, I agree. But there are still three more games where the injury bug could hit us.

Troy brown would do more for the team right now then kelly washington.. Bye kelly washington

Troy is a great guy to keep around 'just in case'

But,No I do not think he is needed on this team without a major injury bug to the corps,We have no weaknesses at WR right now.

I read some here think he would be placed on IR later when he could be activated but since this is very likely his final year that would really make no sense to me other than to either activate him on the roster or cut him,If they put him on IR I think it would be just for the sake of getting a ring.

With his ST play, Washington is more valuable to me than Brown. Troy's a great guy to have on ice, though, if a WR or two gets hurt.

He is? Based on what? The number? I think this is kind of a simplistic argument and not backed up by a lot of cause-and-effect. Obviously he's not what he once was, but if he's what he was, say, LAST YEAR, that's definitely worth having on this team. It's got a lot of benefits actually:

1) a good solid back-up for "the Welker role"

2) a proven, clutch player

3) versatility

4) the tiny effect of goodwill for the team, especially the vets (on its own this would not be enough, but as an additional silver-lining, I think it has value)

I think there are decent reasons to not activate Troy Brown. I don't agree with any that I've heard (in this thread or otherwise), but there are arguable points to be made. IMO, you haven't made any here and I'm not sure it gets much more flimsy than..."the guy is too old."

Sorry. (Points for bravery, though.)

Except Kelly can do more than Gaffney. Bye Gaffney.

My main reason for not activating Troy is that we have a lot of other options; we have a group of talented young and seasoned veterans on our receivers corps. Would you be willing to part with one of them to make room for Troy? Would you can Gaffney, Washington, or Jackson who can give you production probably this year and beyond (and possibly be trade bait) for a guy who will only be around for a year or 2 years at most? I love Troy but I think our team must make the hard decision as to when to let a respected and well-loved veteran go.

I would can Gaffney or Washington for Troy Brown in a heartbeat. Both are on one-year deals, not that that would make a difference to me. I just don't know that it's necessarily the right move - personnel-wise, not having anything to do with sentimentality. Troy can contribute in more ways that are RELEVANT for a 4th/5th WR than Gaff or Washington.

Brown is the only true backup we have for Welker.

I also fail to see what advantages Gaffney has over him except when height is at a premium, e.g. in the red zone. And, hard though that may be to imagine, we have a lot of tall receivers right now.

This is (one of many reasons!) why I am not a GM. I would never cut Brown. The guy could be fifty with two blown out knees and I'd have him on my roster.

I love TB but you're right there's no spot for him right now, but who knows how the injury bug will hit us? It certainly hasn't been kind to us in the past.

I hope once he retires he stays on as a coach.

Tough decision...wait and see what is needed...timing..I would love to see him with this team, but..who is needed more Troy as a 6th WR or??? A tough one..and..if he is cut..a sad day... The IR option is always there as well...but I wonder if he'd really want that?
WIth Stallworth and Washington both who have had injuries galore, I think Troy as a 6th WR might be OK..wait and see.

If by "do more" you mean play special teams, fine, but Gaffney is a much more trusted receiver than Washington. Also, don't forget: Washington was on the inactive list this week vs. one of the better ST squads in the league, so that says something about the coaches' views on him.

Another reason for BB's success: little sentimentality regarding personnel decisions. What's best for the team isn't always the most heartwarming. :(

I think we have a lot more than three games to decide. We don't have to start the three week practice window until week nine. I'd expect that we have AT LEAST until game time during week eleven to make a decision.

It is virtually certain that we will suffer more injuries before then. The only question is whether we can afford to use the newly created roster spots for Troy Brown (when we'll probably want to use them to replace the depth lost due to the injuries).

I certainly hope that Troy makes the team (and that CJ shuts his trap and waits until next year when he'll have significant playing time).

I was thinking about just this fact yesterday after saying that Welker tends to slow down later in the year.

QFT. The guy can play WR, emergency DB, KR, PR and coverage teams. BB has said on several occasions (after getting all the new WRs) that Brown will have a place on the team. He wasn’t equivocal at all. The guy can still play and he’s money in the clutch. If he’s healthy, he should be activated.

Troy is getting released ... not a matter of if he is ... it's when he will be. The recent problems have set this back a few weeks ... Belichick will do it as best as possible. There is a slight chance he'll be IR'd however ... those in the know are hoping for that solution.

I'm hoping he stays as a coach. However, he'll need a settlement to do that so he doesn't lose his players salary which is a whole lot more than entry coach pay. It would be nice to have a player stay and coach ... really nice.

if you are right, then this is the passing of an era....15 years .....man I would hate to see #80 suit up in the green and white....
