Maroney's delay of game

Can anyone help me understand the penalty Maroney got for delay of game? On the replay it looked like he just flipped the ball away, sort of casually. He didn't spike it? I know the rule is new this year but I thought that one was just stupid. I mean Wes really slammed it during the Bolts game and didn't get a flag. I hope the ref's get more consistent with this one.

That was an awful call. Also, on the first offensive series, the Bills should have been flagged for illegal contact at the goal line on Gaffney, and the two botched reviews were miserable. Not the best efforts by the refs today (which is usual for them), but it hardly mattered.

You can't spike or flip the ball at all. They're really cracking down. I have no problem with the call. The rule is stupid, but whatever.

Welker did it last week and didn't get called for it. This week Maroney got called for it. Just seems like it's being enforced inconsistently and it's a stupid rule.

As I posted in the gamed day thread I see a lot of official abuse of that call. It's way too subjective. It's worse than holding. I saw a Redskins player get called for it today too. But, it's going to be very inconsistent. And I'm the first to say calm down and play when teams are over celebrating the most mundane plays but, does the NFL really want to take all the emotion out of the game? Ridiculous.

He just... dropped it. It wasn't even a spike or a flip or a spin. It was totally innocuous in my mind.

I just wonder what happens in a playoff game, under a minute, close game, a big play putting a team in scoring range, and out of natural exhuberance, a player pops up and drops the ball forward, whatever - if the refs call it, it's controversial. If they don't - it's controversial. I'm not sure what they were thinking when they made this decision. Seems short-sighted.

That said, the rule is there and Maroney broke it. Good call, imo.

I disagree. I thought Brady's knee hit, 'though it was extremely close, so I can understand not having probative visual evidence. The backline of the EZ call was putrid. He definitely stepped on the line. TWICE.

How was the 2nd call the right call? His right foot was out of bounds.

His right foot was clearly NOT out of bounds on the angle from the back of the endzone. The ref was standing right there looking at it.

On the Maroney issue, I have no problem with the call. He flipped it forward which they have made a point of emphasis not to do. Sure Welker got away with it last week, but he should have been flagged. I can't stand the need to celebrate on every play, so I don't mind them calling it.

I think the reason that Maroney got called for delay of game was because he got up struted around carrying the ball and then tossed it on the ground. If he had got up and immediately dropped the ball he would have been ok but the "victory lap" moment was what was the issue. Personally I think it was a fair call.

I wouldn't be surprised if you missed it, it was right as they were coming out of commercial and they only showed it once, but the reverse angle from the back of the end zone showed that he was clearly in bounds.

I have the game recorded and just looked at it. He was clearly out of bounds. Go back and look again if you have it recorded. If you don't have it recorded and are relying on memory ...

I saw that replay too which showed that he was clearly inbounds. They showed a great angle from the back of the endzone after the commercial like he said. I do think that the Brady fumble was not a fumble. His knee was down, but what can you do.

I can't explain the call, but I think Belichick should be suspended and the Pats should lose another first round draft pick for whatever the blind refs said Maroney did.

The Head of Officiating stated that he wanted the "spike calls" to be BLATANT spikes, not stuff like this. Bad call.

Brady was down when he fumbled.

The QB stepped on the back of the end zone twice.

All three horrible calls.

It was the correct call, but the rule is really stupid. I'm sorry, but I don't get why spiking the ball unless you do it right in front of a player in a taunting way is a penalty anyway. I guess it is not as stupid as Troy Brown getting a taunting penalty for throwing the ball to the ref last year.

I disagree. The Head of Officiating reviewed a similar play a few weeks ago and said he wanted blatant spikes, and labeled the similar play a bad call. Maroney just tossed the ball, he didn't spike it.
