OT: McNabb's latest blog entry(defending his comments)

This is McNabb's blog entry for today:

"There has been a lot of talk about the interview I did on HBO's Real Sports.
I have no apologies. I was asked a variety of questions and I answered them.
The fact that the producers and publicists at HBO decided to focus on those
answers that related to race shows that it remains a hot topic in society
today.

Let me address some feedback...

First, the interview took place in August before the season started so for
those who think I "played the race card" because we are 0-2 are dead wrong.

I did not say that Peyton Manning, Tom Brady and Carson Palmer are not
criticized when they don't play well. They have been criticized when they
throw interceptions, when the throw incompletions, and when their teams
don't win. They are criticized and so is every other quarterback for that
matter. And that type of criticism may, in fact, be warranted. But that's
not the type of criticism that we discussed.

Black quarterbacks have to deal with different things than white
quarterbacks. If you don't think that's true than you are naïve. Peyton, Tom
and Carson to name a few, have never been asked what it's like to be a white
quarterback. They probably have not been told that they should have
scrambled more. I bet Fran Tarkenton, Steve Young, Jake Plummer, and Doug Flutie have never been told by a member of any racial consciousness organization that they don't play the quarterback position white enough.

I would love to live in a world where race is not an issue. But it is. I did
not ask HBO to interview me but I did consent. I did not bring up the topic
of race but I didn't back down from it either. This interview was supposed
to be about how my career has been surrounded by controversy and how my
upbringing has shaped the way I have dealt with it. Unfortunately, the
interview itself has created yet another controversy.

All I did was answer the questions that were asked of me honestly and
truthfully. I had no agenda. The people of Philadelphia have criticized my
coach for not answering questions. Now I'm criticized for answering
questions. I understand if people have a different opinion or view point
than I do, I really do. I think if there is one thing I understand better
than most people - it's okay to be different. "

Hey McNabb, you wanna know how to fix your problems? STOP SUCKING. Anywho, why are you so concerned. Your successful and making plenty of money. There is NO substance to your "assessment" that black QBs are more criticized than white QBs. Stop making excuses.

I think Chris Carter, of all people, made a real good point on Inside the NFL. He said that he didn't think black quaterbacks were criticized more, but he did say that black quarterbacks are more sensitive to criticism. All quaterbacks are criticized for a variety of things. Rex Grossman probably leads the pack in most criticized. Tom Brady wasn't supposed to be athletic enough. Peyton Manning was a choker. At the same time, quarterbacks are praised differently. Tom Brady is smart, but unathletic. Mike Vick is athletic, but not smart. Bret Favre isn't usually called smart either. J.P Losman has been called athletic, as has Tony Romo. I'm pretty sure Steve McNair is considered by most to be a smart qb.

We're never going to move foward from the whole black qb vs. white qb if we keep living by what people have said in the past.

Why does McNabb have a daily blog entry, anyway? Doesn't he have anything better to do, like, for instance, rehabbing his knee? Or studying film? Or practicing with his WRs? Or even just taking a nap?

It's hard to tell what is eroding faster, McNabb's thick skin or his QB skills. My over/under for Kevin Kolb's first start, when McNabb is a healthy scratch, is Columbus Day 2008.

What he didn't address is that it's Philadelphia and they are a very demanding fan base. Can you blame them?? Two Super Bowl losses and no championships since 1960.....
Mike Schmidt described it as " the thrill of victory and the agony of reading about it the next day" The difference between Philly, NYC and Boston??? Boston and NYC have seen championships in the last few years. The last Philly championship was a generation ago in 1983 ( 76ers). They thought McNabb was the answer ( after busing fans to the draft in NYC too boo the Eagles for not taking Ricky Williams- It could have been worse- look at the other QBs that year) but he hasn't delivered despite 4 straight trips to the NFC championship game, sort of like the Bills in a JV sense.......
I think he sense the frustration and has come to relaize that his time is coming to an end in Philly, if for no other reason that his contract escalates greatly in the next few years. I think 2008 is his last in Philly and Reid has a habit of dumping players when they hit 30 years old....as opposed to BB who thinks that's when Linebackers hit their prime.

We should all let it be. He has an opinion and he's a well-spoken individual who has shown a lot of class while under attack by various people white and black. The fact that people are upset at his comments proves his point about race mattering. Whether he sucks or is the best is not the issue.

Also, some of you are under the impression that it starts with the Eagles. There were issues with him being a black QB in high school and in college too.

I think you have it nailed, and the folks in the press and radio/TV will not let up, either, as long as their offense struggles. Reid should have paid Jeff Garcia to stay for 2007, until McNabb was fully healed.
