Practice squad moves
The Patriots announced the signing of QB David Greene and S Ray Ventrone to their practice squad today.

The team also announced it has released OL Clint Oldenburg from the practice squad. Oldenburg was drafted by the Patriots in the fifth round this year.

Here is some information on Greene from the team's press release:

Greene, 25, was originally drafted by the Seattle Seahawks in the third round (85th overall) of the 2005 NFL Draft from the University of Georgia. The 6-foot-3-inch, 225-pound quarterback has not played in an NFL game and served as the Seahawks' third quarterback for 28 of 32 games from 2005-06. He was Seattle’s backup quarterback for four weeks of the 2006 season while starter Matt Hasselbeck was injured. Greene was released by the Seahawks on Sept. 2, 2007. At Georgia, Green became the winningest quarterback in NCAA history, with his 42 career victories as a starter passing Peyton Manning’s previous record of 39.

Why a new QB?

My guess is that they just want to try him out, see how he looks, due diligence, etc... Hope Oldenburg will be re-signed later on. Too bad for him.

Did Greene play at all with the Bills? Something tells me they may not be happy with Cassell. Even though it doesn't mean much, Gutuierrez is the one who took the kneel downs in the first two games. Maybe they feel Cassel has butterfingers.

Greene was a good college QB, that's all I know about him.

Cassel did not play against SanDi.
Gutierrez did the genuflecting.

we know BB uses the practice squad guys to "play" members of the opposition in practice that they want to key on. Is Greene's style similar to any upcoming opponents?

Cassel probably jammed his finger on that snap he dropped on the FG. If so, they're down a QB in practice while they let it recover. We all know Brady's throws are limited in practice these days.

FWIW, Greene was the darling of the draft board here in 2005. Interesting to see his name again.

Just uninformed speculation, but I would guess that an extra QB is for the nominal purpose of the practice squad, practice. A devoted scout-team QB could free up the other QBs for game prep and skill training.

As we saw this week in BB's compliments of Bam, the practice squad players have a very important task of emulating other players. Green is an amazing talent who can really run and scramble as I remember. He tore up the SEC, and that does not go un-noticed by BB.

Maybe he's our JP Losman clone for this week?

Cassel's stock is dropping...

He can't handle snaps on kicks and he was seen dropping his clipboard several times in the San Diego whitewash.

Unless he learns how to operate a hand-held cam, he will be of virtually no use on the sideline!

Why not? Experience (bench) 3rd rounder, all time wins at Georgia. Why assume the two guys on the squad have a lock on anything?

Last I saw, David Greene was exonerated from cheating on a test, despite Matt Damon's best attempt to smear him because he is Jewish. But he was a great quarterback... did he get into Harvard?

(Is this reference too obscure?)

I think either Cassell is in teh doghouse or injured....

Whats the rule regarding a team sigining a player off your squad? Maybe the Pats signed him, knowing that the Jets may be interested due to Chads injury?

I'm going to guess injured, given that if the Pats were truly desperate for help at QB, they'd have called up Cousin Vinny by now. :)

COWARDDDDDDSSSSS!

The Pats did this last year with J.T. O'Sullivan, who is now the Detroit Lions' backup.

Did you ever see that Family Guy reference? I must have laughed for 20 minutes.

"Go Home Dog!"

I still think the best FG reference ever was the time Chris was trapped in the A-Ha video. Freakin' brilliant.

I was thinking the same thing. Today playing the role of J.P. Losman will be....
