2 workouts
By Mike Reiss, Globe Staff

The Patriots worked out free-agent defensive backs Alphonso Hodge and Marcus Maxey today at Gillette Stadium. The workouts are likely part of the Patriots keeping their emergency lists fresh.

Meanwhile, former Patriots defensive backs Artrell Hawkins and Tory James both had workouts with the Jets.

Gessner gets look
By Mike Reiss, Globe Staff

Continuing to keep their emergency lists updated, the Patriots had former Brown University receiver Chas Gessner in for a tryout at Gillette Stadium on Monday.

The 6-foot-4, 215-pound Gessner got his first crack in the NFL with the Patriots in 2003, when he signed with the club as a rookie free agent. He opened that season on the physically unable to perform list, was later activated for one game, then spent the rest of the season on the practice squad. He returned to the Patriots for 2004 training camp and was released on the final cut.

Gessner spent most of the 2004 season on the Jets' practice squad and was released by the Jets prior to the 2005 season. He's attempted to hook on with the Buccaneers in each of the last two seasons. He was released with an injury settlement Sept. 4.

Gessner does not have practice squad eligibility.

Didn't they already work out Hawkins?

This time they want to know if Hawkins spotted anything suspicious while in New England. They've given up on their season - now it's all about being the Super Sleuth on the Pats.

I was thinking that myself. It seems like they've totally given up on football this season and dedicating themselves to messing with the Pats. Almost like football's version of a Kamikaze mission.

File this under: How to Kill Your Franchise in Four Months.

Who cares...they are heading downward...Interesting about Gessner...

And this is why they will always be several steps behind us, looking for players who can not even make our team. At least this time they actually need defensive back help.

Maxey is FASTTTTT but raw as a CB. Coudl be a good ST player

I know this is dumba$$ question????When did they release Troy James????

I remember Belichick really liking Gessner a lot when he was here.
