I don't make many posts, and especially don't start any threads, but I had to in this case.

I think the media should show some responsibility in their actions and stop comparing the BB situation and Vick. Those two shouldn't even be in the same sentence, let alone have their penalties compared.

Vick killed dogs

BB videotaped something he can see from his own sideline

again...

Am I missing something here? Why are the two brought up together at all? Are people that in need of a scandal they try to create one where there isn't?

We as fans really need to take a stand and not let the media drive away the best coach in NFL history. Every time we see one of these bored hacks in the media trying to compare the two, we need to hound them and ask them why they're comparing the two.

Ask them if they really feel killing multiple dogs should be on par with videotaping something.

Re: Belichick vs Vick

This is the second order effects of a media-driven story. The Patriots on Sunday night sucked most of the oxygen out of the story. Now, we are left with the dying embers, fervently being fanned by the ones who weren't agile enough to get their licks in early.

Re: Belichick vs Vick

That was about the only thing that I took to remember about Goodall's interview on Sunday night. That Vick was suspended as he was Violating a criminal law (can not remember the exact words).... CRIMINAL...

Coach B only broke the NFL rule... which granted, can be a serious thing, but does not involve jail time...

Re: Belichick vs Vick

I mentioned earlier that they are linked in that they are both big stories that have been driven by the Rumor network. I didn't get any response when I started the thread. I believe that this is actually a historic event. Something has changed in the way these stories unfold.

So, due to this new rabid, Florio driven reporting, these stories seem linked to people. It is as if everyone is on huge doses of caffine or something.

Most people will think that I am crazy, but I think we will notice a trend, and I believe that it started with the Vick case. More stories will come out and they will catch fire in a similar way. People will have these comments. "what the heck is going on in the NFL" And, "Man, the NFL is really going crazy this year." It is due to the new Commish, (rookie, so everything is a possible bomb.), and Florio, who taught the Big sites that he could get a bunch of hits by simply posting half truths, or totally non truths.

This is going to be an interesting year.

I agree. There are people scrambling to grab a piece of the pie. A new story will come along. And we will be amazed at how rabid the press is. Really, the internet press is still in its infancy. And we are bound to see some wierd growing pains.

Don't be such a homer, Bill's killing stuff too...... Aren't you paying attention.

So far, he's killed the JETS, and he's killed the CHARGERS too.

I picked up on the same thing. Goodell saying it was the first time I heard anyone say it on TV.

Belichick did not break any laws. That's a big point which has been entirely glossed over and makes every comparison that has been put out there faulty.

You are correct in that it will be an interesting year.... However, living in VA, I can tell you that the stories that I was hearing on the media here were not only rumor from ESPN :(

We saw the dogs being dug up :(

I always thought that NFL had a morality clause... Something like this is not as easy to push under the rug like drugs... It is one of the oldest stories... a BULLY beating up the weaker... The Bully being Vick....

Even people that grew up in his neighborhood were commenting how sad they were that this happened. He didnt come forward and admit it until the other defendants came out and informed on him..... HUGE difference between Vick and Coach...

I just think that we all need to keep it all in the past and move forward to an amazing season! :singing:

One is real life the other is a game, end of story.

Oh man, I so much agree with you about the Vick case. It was really aweful. I understand your outrage about the comparison. There are some folks who are complete hacks who don't care about anything or anyone. By comparing the two, a lot of really good education about how wrong dog fighting actually is, has been lost, or confused. Typical right?

I really agree with you about the coming season. I think that it is gonna be great.

I think it was a comparison between the coach of the cowboys who got suspended for HGH? He was asked why that coach got suspended and BB did not, and that is where the comparison between Criminal activity and rule was clarified.

Lol Perhaps it was... Same difference... (what does that mean anyhow?)

I guess that I am just hearing about Vick too much living in this state..... *shrugs*

Re: Belichick vs Vick

How bout when you hear BB and Bonds mentioned in the same sentence. Ridiculous.

Actually he was making the analogy du jour on why the Cowboys QB coach got suspended and BB didn't. He said what that guy did was illegal, and he also hinted that the spin that it was done for medical reasons was not necessarily the truth...

I'm not sure based on that that Goodell believed his story or believed the excess (he bought a lot of HGH) was flushed because it upset his blood sugar. Just too hard to track other uses when he has since changed teams. Again, Goodell wanted the punishment out there ASAP to send a message to all coaching assistants that if I catch you ordering this stuff, you are going to get a greater penalty than the player who uses it because no matter what sob story you give me there is always the distinct possibility you were distributing it.

Then I believe that you have been sleeping for nine years. The most famous site of this kind provided one of the biggest stories of the century - the impeachment of an American president.

That story of course, was the Monica Lewinsky scandal. The website was, of course, www.drudgereport.com

The interesting thing here that the story Drudge reported wasn't simply that Clinton was having an affair. The story was that Newsweek had had the story for a month, but refused to break it (perhaps the CEO's and staff's contributions to Clintons might have had something to do with that).

Bottom line is that the internet has had a profound impact on the way news and information gets into people's heads, and who (or who no longer) has control over what the "truth" is. (Hint .... rags like Newsweek were the big losers)

In this case, it is somewhat different. In this case, a story that was just going to print was leaked (perhaps even by the person who broke it) to a rumor site that has become the dumping ground by NFL and media folks with information that they wouldn't dare go on the record with. PFT is different only in that it purports to know the "real facts" but often editorializes as it presents the information. This contributed to the firestorm that followed, but it wasn't it's cause - that was happening anyways when Mortenson published his piece.

IMHO, the bogus picture from this site that appeared a million times on every NFL fan website and blog did as much damage - if not more - than Florio's ramblings, and convicted us in everyone's minds right off the bat.

I know what he was referring to and the point still stands. It was the first time I heard anyone make the distinction that what BB did was not illegal, whereas the personal conduct and substance abuse penalties are all against people who have actually broken the law.

Re: Belichick vs Vick

Unless Belichick was videoptaping signs being given to the dogs at Vick's dog fighting enterprises, there is no comparison between these two situations.

Vick broke the law, and was entitled to a trial by jury.

Belichick broke an NFL rule - one of dozens of rules broken every time NFL teams play each other - and was not given the benefit of "innocent until proven guilty"

Beyond that, cruelty to animals is a clear indication of one's ability to commit acts of atrocities agains one's fellow man... so its insulting to even think of these two situations together.

Yea, I have been sleeping a lot. :) Hey, I like it!

But really, you don't think that things kinda changed with the Vick case? It just seemed different to me. This BB crap seems different to me. I think that it is something that will take time to play out.

For instance, if we find ourselves saying throughout this season, "man, there sure are a lot of problems in the NFL that seem to be exploding on the news rather than just seeping out" then perhaps there is a change in the landscape. I think that I am really talking about trends. I think that we are seeing a new trend. It is way too soon for me to prove it. But, if feels more volatile than before. We are all assuming that it is because everyone hates the pats - and to an extent, it is true that they are sick of us, but to be compared to Vick, and Bonds, and Nixon? Something has opened up. It is as if people have no conscience. Ya know?

Think trend.

You may be right that it's different for the world of sports reporting, and the people in this arena are just getting with it. It may just be that the stakes are higher now - there are ton's of outlets, with cable and satellite as well as the internet.

It may simply just be that the new Commissioner, for all his tough talk, has an administration that leaks like a sieve, and he is embarrassingly powerless to stop it. Without the dirt - traditional and internet "media" actually have to work for a living.

Re: Belichick vs Vick

Over the past week I have come to the sad conclusion that the whole "TapeGate" story has had such massive airplay for three reasons:

1. Many reporters hate BB
2. Many NY reporters really hate BB
3. Many, many, many reporters were desperate to pounce all over any damaging NFL story that did not involve an African-American player.

By slamming BB so overwhelmingly they eliminate a whole bunch of the comments saying that Vick and PacMan have been treated unfairly because of the color of their skin.

And I am not saying that BB didn't illegally tape the Jets. I am saying the reaction has been a fiasco, and when you start dealing with the media - there is almost always a secondary reason for what they do - or don't - make a big deal out of.
