so what is it? are they good coaches or was it being with BB that made them look good?
romeo def mastemind...havent seen it yet at cleveland

weiss off mastermind...no tds yet this year ?

mangina..def ..whatever...what he did at ny was put some order there..very weak schedule last year.

espcially with weiss and romeo who have been a few years now..i never expected to see what we are seeing this year.

So what is it???

Hmm...let me see....their players suck?

Belichick was 5-13 with Bledsoe.

The only thing I'd add is that with Weiss, he's a college coach and thus recruiting is maybe the biggest element of the job. Charlie's great first year at ND was with Willingham's recruits. Now in his 3rd year these are, by and large, his recruits. Charlie may just be a lousy identifier and recruiter of HS talent but I'm not sure its reflective of what kind of NFL coach he might be. If/when this ND job eventually crashes for him (a big $ bite for ND seeing he has 8 years left on his contract) I'd love to see him a get a crack at an NFL HC job. I think he's better suited to the pro game and would do well. (NYG as early as next year?).

Romeo is in Cleveland.. forgiven. I do hope they go 8-8 this year though.

ND has no talent and are years away from contention in a major bowl. I watched the PSU-ND game and thought to myself: where the hell is the O-line?

Third one is dead to me. Hope buzzards fly around his carcass when the season is done.

Agreed. And this year there's only one guy to blame for that. CW.

If you dont have the players...what can you do? Was Bill Walsh great because he had bums?

It's too easy to just say "it's the players". The Browns have a good amount of talent, I bet Belichick would do something with it. Charlie has had highly rated recruiting years since he's been there - I know they're young this season but he runs of of excuses next year. Not gonna talk about The Rat.

I think it's a worthy question and right now I'm surprised there hasn't been more success.

Come on, these are their "Cleveland" years. After they fail and are fired, they will resurface and become great. :p

Romeo is a good coach. One of the things you aren't taking into consideration is the relationship between Phil Savage (Browns GM) and Romeo. Its become tenuous at best. Romeo has very little say in the groceries that are bought. The Browns had more holes than swiss cheese when he got there.

Weiss - I believe he's a very good coach. However, you have to remember that he's only got 2 classes of recruits that he's brought in. The 3rd class was brought in by Willingham. That's not to say that they are bad, but they weren't necessarily good either. Most people knew this would be a "rebuilding" year for ND because they didn't have a QB behind Quinn until Clausen joined this year.

Mangini - Most fans said it was a bad situation he was going in to down in NY. Belichick supposedly warned him that it was a bad situation and also told Mangini that if he went to the Jets, he'd not be allowed to talk to any coaching staff about positions there. Before Mangini accepted, he went behind BBs back and started talking to people about going down there. After he accepted, Mangini supposedly kept a Patriots Laptop that had proprietary team information on it. Mangini also had all of his access privelages revoked and was basically escorted around the Pats facilities for his final days with the Pats.

I think that Eric HAD the makings of a good coach. The problem is that he was immature let his ego get in the way. He clearly wasn't ready to take over as a HC after having most of his DC abilities stripped by Belichick half-way through the 2005 season. Since then, he's clearly burned his bridges and is definitely persona non grata in New England. And, if the rumors are true, Eric better hope that Tannenbaum and he are given a lot of latitude to rebuild, otherwise Mangini may find himself out of football.

The majority of the ND players are freshmen and sophmores, and you can't expect much from them due to inexperience and redshirts. And if you can remember, he missed the majority of the recruiting period in his first year because he was with the Pats during the '05 playoff run ('04 season). I think ND's senior class has 9 guys or something like that (all Willingham guys). And the two recruiting classes that Weis has been around for have been top-10 in the nation according to Rivals.com. Hell, their class for '08 is ranked #1 by Rivals.

It does look like things should turn around starting next year, their recruiting classes by year :

2004 - not in top 25
2005 - not in top 25
2006 - 5th
2007 - 11th
2008 - 1st (so far)

Excuse me for saying '07 was a top-10 class. Thanks for the correction. :)

good assesment Dabruinz.

romeo if i remember was desparate to get a head coaching job...so he didnt go to the best possible situation its true...however i would have never expected to see what we saw last week against the bengals.

weiss....also, yes i realize in college it has so much to do with the draft classes. but again...romeo.... cant you squeaze 1 offensive td in 3 games?

in the end i guess i just wanted to emphasize that Bill helps in every aspect of the game. no one gets a carte blanche to call plays off or def on pats. if we had a great defence with romeo it is cause both Bill and romeo worked on all aspects of it.
