ON the Big show...DO NOT know if this was mentioned...

Apparently in an article in 02 in SI...Shanahan admitted he always had a guy with binoculars looking around at the signal callers and that usually by half time they would have the signals deciphered...sometimes much earlier.

Now...is this cheating?? OR part of the game?? Schlereth who made a BIG point about how the Patriots got a BIG advantage apparently was unaware OR more likely did not wish to admit that HIS team got to the same place even quicker. The Big Show, Ordway etc...debunked the fact that there would be ANT advantage to video..in fact they said with a trained coach, it was totally NOT NEEDED. The thought was that BB was using it more for files used later in the offseason and NOT something in the game being played.

GOOD to hear some pro-Patriot talk!!!

Re: Shanahan's admission about getting defensive sigmals

I already posted the actual article in which Shanahan said this, then someone else posted another thread after me with that same article/quote.

That was not against the rules. The use of a video camera is against the rules.

I don't think either one is cheating as they probably have little effect on the game. To me, this ranks up there with Jim Mora using his cell phone on the sidelines.

If the Pats are no longer permitted to capture the other teams defensive signals - but the competition is still permitted to capture New England's, then we have a serious problem.

Re: Shanahan's admission about getting defensive sigmals

Were they binoculars with videotape in them?

The league rule seems to be against cameras and recording devices. There is no league rule against binoculars. We all watched Gruden cover his mouth when he was talking on the sidelines in SB37. Everybody else is doing it too since then.

Of all the possible Kool-aid to drink, this "if X isn't cheating, Y isn't cheating, even though the rule is about Y," has to be the dumbest. The rule sets the limit, and we crossed it.

Now what you CAN say, is that everybody seeks a competitive advantage, and everybody goes as close as possible to the line. Difference is, we went over it.

I'll be interested to see the "more later" Belichick has referred to, but I don't think there's any point in following down these blind alleys. If this is the defense, it's piss-poor.

The NFL allows cheating...THAT is basically what the rules ALLOW...you can get defensive signals in many ways legally...(and easier in fact) using binoculars and having a coach do it...THAT is legal..a video tape?? NOT legal.. The Pats BROKE the rule..but when Schlereth and others berate the Patriots because they say the Pats have a competitive advantage by getting the defensive signals...and that is CHEATING....NOT by the means but by what they got...and condone the fact that every team seems to strive to get this same advantage..it's a bit of hypocrisy...
"This episode represents a calculated and deliberate attempt to avoid longstanding rules designed to encourage fair play and promote honest competition on the playing field,” That is the Commish....how is stealing defensive signals in ANY means promoting honest competition and or fair play? So it's OK to steal signals via binoculars and not via tape?? The RESULT is the same?? The Commish is basically a fraud saying that. Fair play...right!!
The NFL basically allows some cheating and regulates what is or is not. Sorry if you really believe that..you are missing it totally.
