Honestly, what the hell is the matter with this guy?

If he wanted to prevent the Patriots from stealing D signals, he could have gone about it in about half a dozen different ways, none of which would have led to this Patriot-bashing mediafest. If his intent was as simple as stopping us from getting signals, then this media zoo does not happen.

This was obviously a calculated and perhaps premeditated move on the Mangina's behalf, with the intent to deliver a crushing blow to BB both in the court of public opinion and in the eyes of the league.

The question is, why does he want to taint the Patriots and BB so bad? He is forever linked with the Patriots AND their success, what good to him is it to try and tarnish that reputation?

The answer you're seeking is: He never thought it would get this big this fast. If you recall, it wasn't Mangini who alerted the media first. It was a member of the Jets security. I think Eric Mangini's intention was just to tweak Bill Belichick's nose.

Mangini did not realize the fulll ramifications of what he was doing. He saw it almost as a boyish prank, a oneupsmanship in an escalating schoolyard game. The prank blew up in his face and will damage him forever. IMO the Pats in time will emerge unscathed from this, but Mangini will be labeled forever. If he fails with the Jets, he will never get another HC job in the NFL. He will go to the college ranks.

I truly hope this happens.

But I think in order for us to come out unscathed, it has to really come out that this is common practice - that stealing signals is part of the game and that how you do it is largely semantics. I feel that aspect has really been lost to this point. If Peter King is right and the Colts are the kings of stealing D signals, I'd just love it if some other players and teams (ie, the ones who are bytching now) came out and said it. If you can drag another team into this, especially the Colts, the public opinion would likely sway.

As for Mangini, that's a good point I hadn't thought of - that he didn't truly know what would be the result of what he was doing. I do think he had full knowledge of what he was trying to do - catch BB redhanded - and to some extent buy the "he set BB up" kind of theory. But I can see your point, that he didn't really know the consequences of it all.

Honestly? It was done because Mangini was embarrassed over how bad off the Jets really are. They were exposed on all fronts this past Sunday. If you've noticed, no one is really talking about how bad the Jets are. They are all talking about the Pats supposedly cheating.

By doing this, he doesn't have to take responsibility for the Jets not being ready to go for the 1st game of the season.

I do agree with this. And if you think about it, how would he have known? It's never been a big deal in the past (ie. Dolphins last year, Green Bay).

I wonder what he thinks now.

Maybe so. But how much time does that buy though?

And again, he was part of the Pats organization, by implicating BB, he is tarnishing his own past success in our organization. This is and the fact that he's the definition of a snitch/rat are all going to have huge ramifications for him and his career. It's not worth it.

BB said it best -- "Eric, I don't think you're mature enough yet to be a HC in this league." Turns out he was right.

I agree, I do not think he (mangina) meant for this to go where is did. LONG TERM, this hurts him way more then it hurts BB. He has come dangerously close to exposing the UGLY, SEEDY UNDERBELLY of the game that this league has tried so hard to keep from view.

He has forced the commish into an impossible corner. He must deal with this and dole out a punishment that is acceptable to 1) the world, and 2) the Patriots (yeah, thats right). The seam is barely holding and if it busts open, it will be ugly.

On a side note - I've been listening to sirus NFL (owned by the league) and today, regarding the "incident"............... crickets. They answer a question here and there, but this thing dropped like a stone starting this morning. I personally think it's more than a coincidence.

GB didn't confiscate the camera though. I think that's why this story has become such a controversy, there's a smoking gun involved, people automatically make the story a bigger deal than it is.

As someone said on EEI today, Schefter maybe or either D or C, GB apparently admitted later that they didn't pursue the matter much b/c they were doing the same thing to us in the very game.

Wonder what he will say this week when/if he gets his butt handed to him again. And was it Bill's fault they couldn't get their first round pick signed and in camp? Poor, poor Eric. You screwed yourself!

And not only did you screw yourself, but you screwed Crennel and maybe even your old co-worker Rob Ryan over in Raider land. Weis is screwing himself in ND, but it will hurt the current Patriot coaches in trying to get a promotion in the NFL. I hope not, but that is just something that could happen.

And I wish people wouldn't make such a big deal about this as "cheating". Every team is cheating. Every player is trying to get an edge whether it be HGH, steriods, a cornerback grabbing a receiver 15 yards down the field, putting stick'em on your hands, putting oil on your jersey to make it harder to get tackled, treating the balls by kickers, etc. Stealing signs isn't new. If the league can't grow and implement ways to prevent it or coaches can't develop ways to switch it up, then I find it to be there own fault.

My question to Bill: Yes or no, have you designed a way to disguise your play calling so that other teams would have a hard time stealing signals? Say, if someone was taping your calls, would they get much?

All good points...again, I can buy the "Mangina didn't know what he was getting himself and the Pats into".

As for exposing sides of the NFL to fans and the public we aren't aware of, I honestly think maybe Goodell is best of coming down with a light punishment and somehow conveying the fact that "this is a part of the game [that regular Joe Schmoe turning on his tube every Sunday doesn't see]."

The NFL, of all sports, is probably the one that would hurt the most from having the curtain pulled down and letting fans see what it was really like. Not just stuff like this, but the sheer physical brutality these guys go through and such.

I think the Commish has a tough task, he has to penalize the Pats, but he has to recognize the ever present barrier between the NFL that exists and the NFL that fans see. I know he's proven to be a hard-ass thus far, but really, he doesn't want to open up a can of worms here.

And I guess I agree Mangina didn't mean to either.

Link Please?

It's in another thread, that's all I got right now, there's about eight billion of them, I'll search for the exact quote when I'm done at work...LOL...I'm working hard right now in the office.

When asked why they didn't report the Patriots, the GM(?) of Green Bay said, "Because that's not why they kicked our ass." I'll see if I can dig up the article.

Honestly, I don't think Mangini is the primary culprit for escalating this issue into the headlines.

From his perspective, he had some leverage on Belichick, and wanted to use it to disrupt the Patriots' patterns and preparations. That makes complete sense from a gamesmanship standpoint, and I could see Belichick doing the same thing.

Where it's gotten bad is how it's been leaked and portrayed to the media, and that's a combination of two things: (a) Belichick's tight-lipped relationship with sports media, and (b) the Jets front office still being angry and humiliated about the fiasco with Belichick resigning as head coach.

When Mangini tipped off Jets security to throw off the Pats, you can bet that when the guys in the Jets FO heard about it, they immediately leaked it to Patriots-hostile members of the press. Call it revenge, but that's what it is. I honestly believe it wasn't completely in Mangini's control the minute it left his mouth.

The sad thing for Mangina, he will always be known as an average to below average coach best known for not having Belichick shake his hand after a game and for ratting out a guy who even made it possible for him to get a job. Way to go, Mangina. Now go get your shinebox.

I think a more likely explanation is that Green Bay wanted to handle the situation in a professional way. Prevent the action and report the incident. No harm, no foul. The commissioner gets enough of these complaints and tells Kraft to knock it off before it goes public.

A point that I haven't heard anyone make yet is that if Goodell was overly concern about this activity in general (or with the Pats specifically) he would have NFL security ensure that there were no unauthorized cameras BEFORE KICKOFF at every Pats game. He obviously didn't think this step was necessary since a Pats staffer got 8+ minutes of film before the JETS SECURITY (not NFL security) made a stink about it.

This is a case of the Jets messing with forces beyond their control and comprehension. Once Goodell's office leaked his "preliminary findings of guilt" (assuming Mortenson didn't make it up), everything spun out of control. Everyone except the media wants this to go away (the NFL makes $0 from scandal reporting). It will be interesting if Goodell can pull that out of his...um, hat.

I believe it was in an interview between Peter and Boomer Esiason on WFAN. There should be a podcast of it on the WFAN website. It may also have occurred in other interviews with Peter King, which you may find on ESPN et.al.

I really don't think it's the sign stealing aspect that is at issue here. I think is the video taping of the signs. The problem is the commish clearly stated that this will not be allowed. So the incedent at the Jets game seems as if it is a blatent disregard to the commish's mandate.
