Belichick no different than Bonds

BY DAN LE BATARD
[email protected]

Everybody in the game does it. It is impossible to know just how much of an advantage it gives you, although people are willing to fracture rules and honor in an attempt to find out. It is an artificial enhancer of your natural talent that offers you a competitive advantage and lopsides the playing field.

Are we talking about steroids here or stealing signs?

If you are outraged by Barry Bonds and call him a sinister fraud, then you have to think the same of champion cheat Bill Belichick today if you want to be consistent.

Not the same?

You are right.

Belichick's crime is probably worse morally because he ought to know better as the authority figure, and because he was specifically told that videotaping signs was prohibited and he flatly ignored the warning anyway. That makes his arrogance and defiance even more galling than that of Bonds, who may have been rubbing cream on his body because, as we are now learning, everybody in his contaminated and ungoverned sport was doing it at a time when no one was being told to stop doing it.

i didnt know bill was on roids...he doesnt look any bigger...:D

The problem with this analogy is it makes it sound like the only reason people despise Bonds is because of his steroid/HGH usage. That simply ain't true. People despise Bonds because he is, by almost all accounts, a truly reprehensible human being. Things such as being abusive towards women or other alleged criminal activity...

Post Script: I love watching the show "Pardon the Interruption" on ESPN, but I hate it when LeBetard is on. He always struck me as unfunny, unoriginal and somewhat sicophantic. This article will do nothing to change that opinion.

People despise Belichick because he's a class-less jerk as well. As a colts fan, I hated the man, but I at least I had some respect for him. Now, he's just a jerk who cheats. I actually feel sorry for Brady that his super bowl wins will now come w/ an asterisk attached.

Will it be larger or smaller than the asterisk next to Peyton's? The footnote on his reads "actually had the rules changed to benefit his team against another. Could only win against a team that had a 25% attrition rate to the flu."

Sorry, ColtsTroll, but there are plenty of people, including myself, who would tell you that you don't know what you are talking about and should just keep your mouth shut. Belichick has done more to help others and go out of his way to help others than you could ever do even if you were the POPE himself.

BB did NOT CHEAT. To have cheated, they would have had to have viewed the tape and got something from it. Did you ever stop to think that maybe BB and Kraft did this to send a message to the LEAGUE?

A perfect solution to this situation was submitted and turned down by the league by 2 votes. And that was to give 1 defensive played a radio so that he could relay the play calls into the defensive huddle.

I really wish people would stop equating breaking a rule to cheating. It makes them look stupid.

Oh my G*D......When I lived in South Florida I hated this guy. My ex-boyfriend is now the sports editor of the Miami Herald, I knew he was pr*ck when I left him, but this goes waaaaaay over that line. To compare BB to Barry Bonds?? That is the most insane thing I have read. Le Batard is famous for bashing the teams he covers, sort of the Ron Borges of South Florida....

When I lived in South Florida, the dolphins were so bad that playoff games were blacked out because the stadium was not selling out. Florida fans suck! Most of the stadium was filled with fans rooting for the team the Dolphins were playing. Miami is a sad franchise and obviously thier sports department follows suit.

To Cory Nightingale, sports editor of the Miami Herald, this kind of journalism is the reason the Boston Globe and Boston Herald would not give your resume a second look and you got stuck working for a paper in Dover, New Hampshire writing about high school girls basketball!

Actually, the rules were already in effect. The league simply put an emphasis on the already-existing rules because the cheating patriots were not abiding by them during the playoffs. In essence, the only cheating that went on in that game was done by, to nobody's surprise, the patriots.

As for the flu thing--get real. If your guys had the flu, that's too bad. Last I recall being sick does not get you a pass. Besides, we all know your defense lost that game because you couldn't get off the field. Oh and Reche "couldn't-catch-a cold-to-save-his-life-much-less-a-pass" Caldwell didn't help matters.

DaBruinz,
For arguements sake, what if that camera had a live feed to a booth, a Pats coach, etc. Would that be cheating? I would say that it would be. If it's just a tape and they review it the next day, yeah, it's pretty negligible. But if it's used during the game at hand....cheating. No question.

Wow. Just wow.

I really wish people would stop trying to explain how this isn't cheating. It makes them look stupid.

Hey, I'll be the first one to admit Bill Polian is a ruthless son of a *****. He can be intimidating as hell, cut players without any remorse and rip into interviewers on the air in order to defend his position. You can say a lot of things about the man and most are true, but he is not a cheat. Being in the competition committee and asking for existing rules to be upheld is the exact opposite of a cheat.

Plus Dungy is a choir boy who wouldn't stand for any of that in his locker room.

It's hard to read your post with all the illegal crowd noise being pumped into this thread.

What would a live feed actually do? Show the defensive coach sending in signals. You'd have to remember exactly the signals he sent in AND reference the pre and post snap shots to figure out what they meant. You wouldn't be able to use it until a few plays later, IF they actually used the same signals.

Plus, there is usually only a 15 second window between the end of one play and the start of the next before the QBs headset gets shut off with 10 seconds left on the play clock.

Awesome!

Chad Pennington now has as many legitimate Super Bowl wins as Tom Brady.

Only a total imbecile would say something like there. There are no tainted SB wins, no matter what you haters say.
