Bigger deal: Salary cap cheating, or this?

It seems to me that cheating on the salary cap is a much bigger violation than this incident... It is NOT against the rules to steal signals.... The only issue at all, is that we taped them...
Salary cap cheating allows you to have players that you otherwise would not have on your team, a MUCH bigger deal.

The Broncos were penalized a 3rd round pick for salary cap cheating; that should be an absolute ceiling on any sanctions from this incident.

Something like this should be a fine and maybe a 6th or 7th.

Salary cap cheating is by far a bigger issue, but the precedent you are refering to is one by another commisioner. It will have minimal impact on this decision. I will be surprised if it is only a 3rd rounder.

I'd say this is equal in severity to the salary cap violation, especially given that the Pats had already been warned.

While not technically cheating the cap, the league has asked agents to stop allowing their clients to accept "likely to be earned bonuses". Which you have been known to hand out so that you can tack onto the next years salary cap.

As for which is more dubious, I'd have to say Video-Gate, even though the Broncos are in the division.

The Broncos cheating of the cap was a hell of a lot worse than a LTBE cap manipulating arrangement (which BTW, NE along with several other teams used just this past year). Denver specifically had wink, wink, nudge, nudge deals to compensate guys in ways that were not on the books. If you don't think that is worse, I would suggest reading up on it.

Not the same as what the Broncos did... The Broncos outright cheated... lots of teams use the totally legal LTBE bonuses, in fact the Vikes just did it for $13M this week.

That's an odd situation because you could argue they're exposing their players to potential injury more than anything.

Is this better or worse than what the Broncos did with the salary cap? I don't know. I'd say in the long run this hurts Belichick's chances as a first ballot hall of famer more because it will be more recent in people's memories. Punishment is incoming, they'll deal with it, and they'll continue to win 2x as many games as they lose. That's not a grand guarantee, they could end up losing in the division round (lets face, Indy, NE, and SD can't ALL be in the AFC title game) but people acting like they're about to go 3 - 13 need their heads examined.

Yeah, the Broncos cheated to the tune of $29 million in monies to Elway and Terrell "I'm a hypocrite" Davis.

Big difference between that and the Pats taping a defensive coach but never having actually seen or used the tape since it was confiscated before they could ever view it. Heck, there may not even been ANYTHING on the tape. And that is what I would find the most fun of it all if that came out...
