From the ESPN article:

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell has determined that the New England Patriots violated league rules Sunday when they videotaped defensive signals by the New York Jets' coaches, according to league sources.

...

The Patriots will be allowed an opportunity to present their case by Friday, sources said, most likely via the telephone.

NFL spokesman Greg Aiello said on Tuesday that no official decision has been made and that the club has not been notified.

Man, I hate the media.

not only that. Regardless of what Goodell finally rules, i'm, still withholding my opinion on this mess until the pats respond.

I wonder if the Patriots can present evidence of other teams doing the same thing. That would seem to help our case.

I think that's their ace in the hole. Seriously, who sends a guy with Patriots credentials onto the opposing sideline with a shoulder-mounted video camera and tape and aims it directly at the opposing coaches? It's too blatant. BB is effing with the Jets and the league.

Regards,
Chris

and, mortensen, who "broke" this story was also 100% certain yesterday that Eli Manning had separated his shoulder and would miss a month...which is not what eli and the giants are saying...

Way to keep the hope, but don't lose any sleep over it.

My thoughts exactly! Come on, with everything BB has accomplished throughout his career and NE, why would he blatantly do something this stupid. The homer in me believes that the "mad scientist" is one step ahead and actually up to something. The fan in me wants to throw up 'cause I'm PO'd about the whole affair after having actually witnessed the trouncing we gave the Jets at the Meadowlands and all the negative attention now focused on the Pats. Can we please get back to talking about football!!

Belichick is going to make an amazing, memorable spine-chilling speech reminiscent of those at the end of Fountainhead or Atlas Shrugged

While I like the optimism. I feel that they are going to say the Pats cheated and punish them. Either way I won't turn on the Pats.

I think you all are in denial. The league has lots and lots on Belichick. The pats will testify on Friday and the punishment should be down very soon therefafter.

I'll believe you when you learn how to spell "Kaczur".

I was commenting on the idea that the conclusions and the punishment have already been drawn up, without hearing the Pats' side. For example, if BB privately tells Goodell that he has boatloads of evidence of other teams do the same thing, and it would be "a shame" if that were to be released to say, the New York Times, for an investigative reporton cheating in the NFL, then maybe Goodell would temper his punishment and keep everything in house.

Jusyt saying that BB is not a dum-dum, nor is he easily manipulated. Let's see how he handles this with the league before jumping to media-driven conclusions.

Like I said in a different thread. The League will find that the Pats had a camera on the field, they will receive a fine. That will be it! No mention of cheating or anything else. All the rest of this story is just piling on! And boy, is it a pile!

Huh, thanks. Between ESPN and the thread on this board I had been lead to believe that the NFL had actually issued a statement.

I don't care if BB is classless and a cheater as long as he isn't an objectivist.

I'm of the opinion that this is being blown out of proportion by the elements of the media, namely Florio at PFT and parts of ESPN.

I'm in Australia, so I don't get NFL news on TV and Radio, but the reports I've been reading on the internet seem to be coming only from "sources" and "reports".

The reality, up until this point, is that Goodell has not said anythign official, nor as the NFL. Another reality is that this could have just been a media beat up. As someone else said, why would BB and the Pats be so stupid to do it so obviously and what does it actually achieve.

It is just something for PFT and ESPN to make into an enormous story so people tune in every 30 minutes to get an "update" or keep refreshing the page so advertisement revenue ticks over.

Of course, I could be proven completely wrong, but right now I feel that there is nothing going to be done. If something was going to happen, it would have happened by now.

But how can a team be cheating by recording the opposing team's sideline if the game is being telecast?

There would be at least a dozen cameras aimed at various parts of the stadium, not to mention the hundreds (possibly thousands) of fan videos that make it onto youtube.

I still don't know how the league can say that teams aren't allowed to have camera's going during the game. The coaching staff might use different angles for different things for video sessions. Equally, there are the camera teams that usually record those "insider" shows for the various team websites.

If the NFL wanted to be consistent, it would have to ban all cameras in the entire stadium besides the telecast team. Otherwise, there is too much ambiguity.

I agree with this..........the Patriots ARE NOT STUPID.

Cousin, Like it's been stated. An assistant coach with a clip board and binoculars from the press box can see what the defensive signal is being flashed in as. He holds up his arm. its' a blitz. He holds his hat it's cover 2, etc. There was no need for this sideline crap with all the technology, so is the penalty that the guy meandered over to the Jets sideline and took pictures that he might try to sell etc. by the way, so.....by league rule where as he had a Pats credential, the Pats are guilty.
Where the hell was Inspector Clouseau, the Jets Security Chief when this Pats "agent" was standing there the whole first half? When was he fired?

Consider this: BB was trying to mess with Mangini the first half. Mangini gets the last laugh because BB is in dutch. BB gets the next to the last laugh cause he kicks Manginis' butt. Was this BB and Eric busting each others killyonees? No one won this little game.
