I say a quick square-out to Welker to make it 2nd and short.

My point?

The Pats absolutely MUST retain their focus this week. From Robert Kraft to the video assistants to the ushers. The objective is beating the San Diego Chargers this week, part of an overall goal of winning as many games as possible this season (and then trying for that oddly shaped trophy the Pats have three of).

It's no secret the Pats have been viewed by many in recent months as "the team to beat." And whenever that is the case, other teams will be willing to throw everything but the kitchen sink at you in order to impede your progress.

Now, let's not be naive here. It can be said for certain that every team in the league, in some shape or form, will try to gain a completely legal competitive edge by observing and interpreting the opponent's signals. You'd have to guess that every team adjusts their signals every week to counter-act this. It's really only the same-game observation that counts (and really a video camera is a rather interesting method of doing this considering the technical restraints, but that's discussion for another thread). I'm sure the Pats aren't the only team to try videotaping the other team, or at least that's what I've gathered from what I've read over the past couple of days (and last year when Casserly called out the Pats for it and Belichick fired back with a "it's nice to see he's still employed by an NFL team.") -- it's just that the Pats were brazen enough (for whatever reason) and the Jets confident enough in their innocence (I doubt we would have seen any of this if the Jets had won) that they made a symbolic gesture and sent the tape in. But in reality, I don't think we can sit here and deny that most teams employ some type of rule-bending strategy to do this, and the NFL, of course, knows this. It's like the anti-collusion rule: every team disregards it and the NFL pays no attention. This time the Jets' whine was loud enough the NFL had to do something.

Was the Jets' objective to strip the Pats of a pick and make Robert Kraft's wallet a bit lighter? Of course not. It was purely to take a shot at their divisional rival. Gamesmanship, if you will. Flashback to exactly 1 year ago. The Pats trade Deion Branch to the Seattle Seahawks and file a tampering grievance against the New York Jets. Just as the Jets telling Branch what they'd offer in a trade giving Branch a negotiating edge was gamesmanship on the Jets' part, the Pats filing a tampering grievance against the Jets the week of their matchup was also just gamesmanship. Again, the penalties for each of these charges (tampering or illegal videotaping) are completely irrelevant to the teams making the charges. It's only the distraction and extra work that truly matters. All NFL teams at any given time are trying to throw each other off course. And if they're not, you're the Raiders or the Browns. Folks, we see this every week. Polian and his fellow Patriot-victims of the Competition Committee adding in the "chuck" and "0 timeout" rules in order to take shots at the Pats. The Jets and Pats calling in each other's former players for lessons on each team. Or, if you recall, Jonathan Smith's stint with the Pats before the Bills game last year. This is what the NFL is all about!

And guess what? It's Tuesday night at 8:31 PM EST. One-third of the week is already over for the Patriots, and the only talk in town has been about last weekend's game. And, as we've also seen, other teams -- the Lions, Packers, etc. are jumping in and trying to make sure that talk extends deep into this week. Again, why is this?!? For the Patriots are forced to expend all their energy focusing on the Chargers, not all this crap.

It's 100% semantics!

Quite simply, it's the rest of the NFL world -- inferior, many "experts" concluded shortly after last weekend's game -- that is trying their very best to close that gap. And to them, a loss this weekend for the Pats would do a great deal towards that goal.

Which brings us back to the main point.

What play should the Pats run first on Sunday night? Because that's certainly all (well, maybe a little more than the first play) the Pats care about right now. They realize this is all a game, just as all 31 other teams do, and will continue to fight through this "adversity."

Continuing my rant:

Can anyone believe how seriously the local news channels are taking this? "BREAKING NEWS: PATS ACCUSED OF CHEATING!" or "BREAKING NEWS: PATS FOUND GUILTY OF CHEATING!"

I can't help but laugh at this. And I'm sure the Pats are doing the same, at least when they have the chance.

So, I think we all need to take a deep breath. Enough with the "I'm still a real fan!" threads, enough with the "Can you spot the cameraman?" threads. As much as our trolling friends will make you believe otherwise, true or false (apparently true, but again, I don't care), this...does...not...matter!

Great post, and thanks for summing it up so well. You are totally right and I think if BB does anything well it's keeping the team focused through controversy. This will be probably the biggest test of that.

Maroney off tackle right for 4 yards.

Dan Wetzel seems to get the main gist of the whole thing, and I applaud him for that:

http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/news?slug=yhoo-productsofthesystem&prov=yhoo&type=lgns

However, the only way he really mentions the semantics-side of this is when he describes coaches will go for any competitive edge they can find. That can easily be stretched to fit the fact they'll find something marginally illegal an opposing coach is doing to gain an edge for themselves, but Wetzel never actually goes this far in his analysis.

Maroney up the middle. Three times in a row.

What was this thread about?

Bomb to Stallworth.

Exactly.

What I think many of us are missing is that teams aren't doing this to have the NFL incur the wrath of the penalties for these prohibited acts. It's really only to gain a competitive advantage themselves.

Just like Jim Mora, Jr. and the Michael Vick injury report thing 2 years ago, when he was listed as probable most of the week until he was switched to questionable before the game and didn't play. Now, the Pats could probably have mounted a decent case against the Falcons for this, but they didn't. Probably because the Falcons' chess move occurred so close to the game that any action wouldn't distract the Falcons until they were off to their next opponent. And again, any grievance (that probably would be rejected, but again, it's a distraction) filed would be only to throw off the Falcons, not to have the NFL take away a future 7th rounder or whatever. So what did the Pats do the next week? Listed all of their injury report as probable most of the week, then changed them all (except Brady) to questionable at the last minute. Again, it's completely semantics folks. This time, though, the Pats were taking a slight shot at the NFL for their injury report system, as they've been doing for the past 4 years with Brady's "probable" right shoulder "injury!"

Bomb to Moss. Why not. :D

Enjoyable post ... however there is only one option ...

And thats a huge bomb to Randy Moss. Get the crowd into it, get this 'cheating' bull**** out of the minds of everyone.

Lets see whos cheating when Brady takes a saucy #2 all over the Chargers secondary.

Right now there's blood in the water around the Pats and the rest of the teams in the league are circling to do anything possible to take them down a notch. This is made even worse by how badly we trounced the Jets this weekend. If there's anyway to weaken the Patriots (they are hoping BB suspension or firing I'm sure) they are pushing for it in the same way the Pats saw a chance to get an advantage by taping the signals. You are totally correct, and I guess we all have to just accept that competition in the NFL doesn't just take place on Sundays on the field. Ultimately the decision for punishment lies with the commisioner and I'm of the belief that the Patriots are one of, if not the most, valuable franchises to the league so it will be something along the lines of losing a third round pick.

Bingo! We've got Bingo!

Also through the years...how many times have we heard the Pats are not the most talented team but still win. Somehow for other teams these reasons 'validate' their theory that the pats couldn't have won all those games.

If we had superstars with huge numbers like Aikman, Smith, Irvin, Peyton...it wouldn't be so widespread reaction.

And it wouldn't surprise me one bit to see another team "caught" trying to pull the same thing against the Pats this season. From the great Breer article that someone dug up on another thread from last year after the Miami cadence stealing incident, it was clear that BB didn't make a big deal about it. Everyone does it. The Pats just did it better than anyone else and made themselves a target by being so good. But now that they've been called out I really feel bad for anyone who tries to do it to them now.

I was wondering when you would say something. Awesome post. This franchise got no sympathy when we were at the bottom and now that are at the top we have the bullseye on us and we get even less. We need to circle the wagons and take care of business. What an awesome way to say F off to the critics than to go out and take care of business and win the whole thing again (with them watching our every move.) Btw I like the Welker call except I want to move the chains.

I have one other thing to add:

As BB did in his press conference today, the focus absolutely must be kept on the Chargers.

If I was Hobbs or Vrabel or Gaffney answering questions this week, this is how I'd operate:

Q: What are your thoughts on the Patriots videotaping the Jets?

A: Yeah, I do agree with you there. LT is a really explosive runner. We're going to have to play our best game of the year this Sunday in order to beat the Chargers.

Q: Has coach said anything to you about him being suspended or anything like that?

A: Well, when you're going up against a team like the Chargers, you're really looking to have a good week of practice. They have guys like Rivers, Merriman, and Castillo we're going to have to look out for. It'll be tough.

A bomb down the sideline pass to a Cameraman wideout (sorry, not funny but could not resist)

Flea Flicker? No I say a run right at Merriman.

Good post. I agree with your observations, and the sooner we stop dealing with the pure speculation at this time, the better.

First play: Play action to Maroney, 12 yard pass to Welker on the left sideline complete for a first down.
