Not to beat a dead horse but IF the pats are guilty of whatever videotaping they are alleged to have comitted, is there a set punishment on what the consiquence would be? I have heard that it would be draft picks taken away. Dos that mean a first or a second? Or is this something that goodell (?sp) gets to wave his magic wand and do whatever he feels fit. Anybody have any insite?

There is no set rule.

Serious repeat violations of the salary cap have previously resulted in the loss of a third round pick by the Denver Broncos.

A salary cap violation is more serious because:

1. It goes to the heart of the agreements which serve as the foundation of the league's prosperity and
2. It has an obvious competitive advantage.
3. It is followed rigidly by nearly all franchises.

In this case:

1. Stealing signals does not threaten the league as a whole.
2. Many are openly scoffing at the notion that this provides a large competitive advantage.
3. There is reason to believe that many other franchises do this (albeit less brazenly).

If the Patriots were caught red handed, I think they need to lose a draft pick, just to communicate that there are actual competitive consequences for this type of behavior. But I think that a seventh round pick would do the job. I'd be surprised to see us lose more than a #6 and SHOCKED if we lost a pick on the draft's first day. I would not be shocked if we kept all of our picks, but I think that Goodell might be making a mistake if he does that (again IF we have been caught red handed).

Actually, one of the ESPN talking heads said he wouldn't be surprised if it were a first-rounder. This way it would set an example to others, if this is indeed a league-wide practice.

I heard it on the drive home from work last night. They said Mortensen reported we could lose a draft pick and "Joe Blow" said that draft pick can even be a first. It actually might have been a ESPN radio guy.

This afternoon I heard a Charlie Weis interview with ESPN. He said he's not going to touch this subject with a 10-foot pole. He did say "that it brightened up his week." Whatever that meant. I know he's going through his own problems with the Irish, but the way he sounded, it seemed like he is glad that this happened. Is he jealous of Bill?

I think true Patriots like Weiss find this amusing (possibly a slight twinge of pride over it). These guys are tough, smart, AND nasty and have been for the entire time here. They don't want people to like them. They want you to fear them.

Only the naive people who fell for all the boy scout image crap are all shocked and holier-than-thou at this point.
