.... and other thoughts on today and next week.

1. WOW!!!! That is about the most perceptive initial observation I can make. I mean, we have seen THREE superbowl championships in the last few years, but we never saw an offense like that....ever, and I go back ALL the way to 1960. Just plain WOW!

2. What is scary is the fact that this passing attack can only get better. I thought Randy Moss was effective, but not explosive. Now that could be because he still isn't full strength with his hamstring, or it could be because he just doesn't have that explosive speed anymore. If it's the latter then I'll take what he can bring even though he isn't the Randy Moss of the past. If its the former, then boy do we have some exciting times ahead of us.

3. Moss is just so smooth runing his patterns that even if he has lost that explosive burst he will effective for the Pats all year. Brady has NEVER had a target like him. Hell no other Patriot QB has ever had a target like that.

4. I bet Wes Welker feels worse about that drop than any of us. IIRC that led to the only punt of the first half, if not the game. But it is clear that he will be a much bigger threat in the Pats offense than he was in Miami

5. For though those who might be a bit disappointed in A Thomas's debut....DON'T BE. While I don't think that Thomas will have the personal stats that will make people stand up and notice, his impact to the Pats overall defense is worth EVERY penny we spent. He's the kind of guy that makes OTHER players better. He's the guy that allows the Pats to do things that they couldn't do last year.

With him, Bruschi and Seau can split the other LB position and it will end up being MORE productive than it would if only one had to play it full time.

With him Vrabel can concentrate on being on the outside, which will give both he and Colvin the chance to make big plays.

With him the Pats are a better underneath coverage team.

With him they can threaten the middle rush much more effectively than they did when Tedy was doing the rushing.

The list could be longer. I just want to say to AD, that there are a lot of fans who will not judge you on your INDIVIDUAL STATS, but on your total impact to the entire defense. We are all glad you are here.

6. Many among us either were critical of the Sammy Morris signing, or at best, kind of blase about it. I want to now publically say now that I was (and others) were WRONG. Morris was the best RB on the field today, and showed us that he can be the solid, if unspectacular RB that will not only help save Moroney from having to carry the ball more than 300 times, but could actually be an effective #1 for a few games if necessary. He also showed he can get the tough yardage on 3rd and short and the GL. All in all it looks like it will turn out to be a better signing than a lot of us expected.

7. That was a horrid reaction to Pennington's injury by Jet fans. Alot has been discussed in other threads, but I'll take THIS opportunity to be the first to opine, that in a year or 2 when the Jets dump Pennington, I'd love to see him end his career backing up Brady. He's the smart, tough, accurate QB who could take a team far into the playoffs with a good team like the Pats, should the unthinkable ever happen. 2 times he moved the Jets to TDs, despite the fact he had NO running game, a poor OL, a bad ankle, and a Defense who know his every limitation. In other words the kind of guy you'd like to have covering your back in a war.

8. I can't say enough about the OL and the protection Brady got, even when the Jets blitzed. THere were a couple of times early in the game, when Brady's internal alarm went off and he started scrambling even when there was no one around him. It was kind of funny to watch. It almost looked like he was embarassed when he realized he was scrambling around the backfield even though there was no one around him.

9. You know when Bill says in his post game press conference that there are things that the Pats need to improve on for next week? Well here is my list.

a. To Lawrence Moroney. Hey buddy, with the new zone blocking schemes, its ONE cut and go. There was too much dancing even BEFORE you got to the LOS. Watch how Sammy Morris ran, and try and duplicate it. With this kind of offense it will be more important to get the sure 3-5 yards, than it will be to try and break the long ones.

We have other guys to make the big plays, you don't have to be one of them. If you hit the hole hard, believe me you will get more than your share of those big plays.

b. KO Coverage team - The Pats kicked off 7 times and 4 of those times Miller or Washington was able to get the ball past the 30 yard line. That's not good enough. On one of those the KO was only to the 10 so you get a pass on that one, but the other 3 weren't acceptable. I know the talent is there to do better because there were 3 times where you didn't allow the Jets to get to the 25. Lets be more consistent THIS week.

c. Asante Samuel - feeling the rust on those GL coverages, Zant? I guess so. The actual coverage wasn't that bad, but your timing when the ball was coming to Coles was off by just a hair and that cost you....and the Pats. Well they'll give you the check anyway, but you know in your heart, you didn't earn all of it. Just be better THIS week.

d. ZERO turnovers by the defense. Now IIRC the Pats are notoriously slow, for some reason, in getting TO's early in the year. I have no idea why? They will need 2 TO's next week IMHO, I hope they work on it.

e. Dante Stallworth - Learn the damned offense Dante, and maybe next week you'll be the guy with the 180 yd day. You can't get on the field without knowing where to go. Just asked Chad Jackson how that all worked out.

f. Sorry, but the run blocking will have to improve. The Pats will face a lot better DL's than the Jets in the future, and while today the running game was pretty effective, they won't get that kind of yardage against better DL's if they run block like that.

10. Best job in the NFL for 2007...being the Punter for the NE Patriots. :D

He's so smooth it doesn't look like he's running fast, but I noticed that he seemed to speed up when he needed to. Also it looks like he has stickum on his hands,he catches everything so effortlessly. All toghether he's something special and I hope he stayes healthy aal year.

He has another gear, but he uses it under control just to get separation, not to blow guys off the line. I don't think that does any good, and he's so tall he doesn't need to do that. It's not easy to hit a streaking north/south target. When he's the Good Randy, Moss leads his quarterback by running slowly enough to make himself an easy target but fast enough to get separation. When engaged, he also really uses the width of the field as well as any receiver not named Harrison in the league.

When he's on, there's nobody like him in football. I can't think of a guy I've ever seen that makes the game look so effortless. The problem is that he seems to disappear at times, and as giddy as we all are about Moss after one game, we just don't know if that will continue. Remember the Moss the played in Foxboro a few years ago? Why did we never really see that guy on the Raiders again?

My fanclub has another new target, just stay out of my fox hole partner, no need giving the enemy fire teams bunched up targets!

Good observations, and explanation of useing his speed and smoothness he does make it look effortless. I think the Moss of the Raiders wasn't very motivated to play the way he can.And I know some would say he's getting payed. But that holds true for everybody there are alot of people I'm sure that under certain circumstances don't put the effort they could into doing their job. I think he let the hopelessness of the Raiders get to him. The Raiders are dysfunctional organazation and Moss wanted to be on a team that had a shot of winning . And when he relized that wasn't going to happen in Oakland he just ended up not caring.

Re: An old man's observation's.....

from another older dude, very nicely said... agree completely with the assessment of Thomas.. this is not a stat driven defense.. but his presence was noticable.. couple of times in coverage, had to check the number to make sure it was really him. He is all over the place.. great complimentary defense.

As far as Moss goes, agree with his speed.. he looks slow, but he is not, he is incredibly sneaky fast. Brady will have a very good year, and have not even seen much of Stallworth yet. Welker is another outstanding addition..

Re: An old man's observation's.....

One other observation..Down near the goal line in one instance both Vrabel AND Junior Seau came in as eligible receivers. We all know about Touchdown Mike but I can't recall Seau ever doing it. I think it preceded a penalty so they changed the package.....but I think Junior is itching to catch a Brady TD...when they double cover Vrabel,,,,,

Re: An old man's observation's.....

running past the 3 defenders seemed like a burst. that is how he runs...or glides...i can see now why some reporters thought he was dogging it in practice...he runs effortlessly. and the way he puts his hands up last second to haul the pas in....reminds me of ....the strike of a cobra...so fast...doesnt give the defender a chance.

I think Belichick put both of them in because he was pissed off about the way the Jets hid their wide receiver (forgot his name) in the slot for the TD in the flat. the camera went to Belichicks face and he gave a nasty look over to the Jet's sideline.

I may be wrong about the reason, but I know that play pissed him off!

Agree with most of your thought on AD and further, I just feel better about the match-ups next week against Gates and LT and/or Neal on screens or dump-offs. And with both AD and Seau, it's a far stronger unit than the one we had last year with Tully in stuffing the run and in coverage.

Yes the OLine played a solid game, but in the second half, the Pats employed max-protection sets: one WR, lone back, two TEs and another OT staying in-line in the role of a third TE. Thus, even on Moss' reception against triple coverage, we had a line that featured L to R:

Kyle Brady-O'Callaghan-Light-Mankins-Koppen-Neal-Kaczur-Watson

Watson went downfield on a short route and KB went downfield on a crossing pattern and was wide-open 20 yards downfield because Moss had drawn the safeties. As was seen, Brady had all day on this play and elected to throw into triple coverage instead of hitting KB. Following this TD, O'Callaghan moved to the right side next to Kaczur, but an eight man OLine was often used for the rest of the game.

IIRC Junior Seau ,made an excellent block stopping the MLB from getting to Heath Evans. Evans went in straight behind that block.

Re: An old man's observation's.....

To your point number 6. Re: S. Morris.

Point taken. You are correct. I for one have been very impressed with Morris. Who knew? He showed his stuff in the final preseason game, and he didn't disappoint yesterday.

That's why I'm an engineer, and BB and Pioli do the player evals.:)

Re: An old man's observation's.....

Great post, man. After watching the Chargers game last night though...they just might help us with those two TOs you think we'll need. I agree with most of what you said... but I'm not sure we'll need 2 TOs (unless we give up two TOs)... regardless... really enjoyed reading your thoughts!

Re: An old man's observation's.....

Great post as usual Ken, just 3 critics.

1. Moss looked explosive to me. It's just relative. When he beat tiple coverage, looked like he was taking an early morning jog. But look at him relative to the three defenders who where in dead sprints and you will see he was seperating. If he gets better then today, great. But even half of what we saw today is better then anyone Brady has ever had as a target.

2. I think most people where thrilled with AD's performance. I know I was. If anything, it was Bruschi in coverage that had me a little concerned. Anytime I saw AD, he looked great!

3. Ken, when it comes to football you are almost always the voice of reason. And you normally follow up a big win or a big loss with your pattented, "You are normally not as good as you looked, or not as bad as you looked" (I forget your exact wording, it is much better then nime ;) ).
I'm as syched as the next person, but people have to remember it was just one game.

Re: An old man's observation's.....

I must agree with these assesments.

The only thing I can add is you watch on Moss's long TD he is favoring the left leg so his hammy is not at 100% and he is still scary fast because of that long gait.

Yes. When I watch the TD play, he definitely turns it up when he needs to. And his hands are like velcro. I couldn't get over it.

Re: An old man's observation's.....

I have never seen a patriot passing game as potent. Moss is by far the best receiver I've ever seen on this team. I do only go back to 1979. If Moss signs an extension, Brady-Moss will be the best combo we'ver ever had. And BTW, Welker is a pretty good replacment for Troy Brown in the slot. He will need to become more sure-handed, but that will come.

I'm not at all impressed with Maroney, but he's OK, as much as we need in his role as a running back. Well, he's OK as long as we have Morris, Faulk and Evans. They will all have their roles.

I was very impressed with Thomas. His pass coverage is amazing. It is a little early to call him a freak of nature, but he was certainly impressive. We can now let Bruschi play half-time.

In the defensive backfield, I was impressed with James Sanders. He's all we expected. And BTW, Andrews is a fine backup and STer.

And let's not forget Mays and Washington as special teams stars (surprises to many). Oh, do we have a new holder PERMANENTLY?

I think the problem is the exact opposite. It seems he is far too content to burrow into the line when by being patient he could break a big one to the backside. Contrary to what you saw, I saw him frequently taking the sure 3-5 yards, which I guess is nothing to complain about.

Re: An old man's observation's.....

I know I write this every year (and I'm trying to keep it to a once-per-year quota), but Patfanken is someone whose posts I'd actually pay good money to read.
