Was beaten quite a few times...not deep because he had safety help but looked outright bad on a couple. The touchdown play was the worst...a top NFL corner needs to make that play. I think this is the hangover from missing so much time...a few different camera shots showed him gassed. Hopefully he works it out, and gets into game shape quickly, or he can kiss his big payday goodbye.

Re: Asante didn't have agood day

He certainly didn't have a good game. He was beaten a couple of times (slipped). And, the Coles TD was really bad. You are right, a top 3 corner does not get beat on that play. He looked like the Asante Samuel from 2 years back, not the one of last year.

Asante looks much smaller than last year. Looks like he lost some weight.

Re: Asante didn't have agood day

I never thought Samuel was a top 3 corner but I actually think the one Coles caught was a better job by Samuel than the one he dropped. It was just a really strong and good catch by Coles. Samuel had his hand in there and most of the time, that's an incomplete. Gotta give Coles credit there because it was more of a good catch than bad coverage by Samuel.

Hobbs is still our best CB :)

And I honestly find a small part of myself enjoying it when he struggles. Obviously, most of me wants him to make big plays because I want the TEAM to do well, but a little voice inside my head said "And you think you are worth Nate Clements money you twerp?"

I know it's childish, but he really irked me...and I am never one to begrudge players wanting money normally, but he is just way out of touch with reality. Was his play today worth $400,000?

Re: Asante didn't have agood day

He could've sent a major message with a big game. I'd be utterly embarassed if I performed like that after skipping practice because I wanted more money.

Well he ain't going to be with the team next year so hopefully he picks it up and plays well for his next contract....

Next week would be an excellent time for him to step up.

Asante looked like he has for most of his career through the first half of last season - like an average CB who will make a play now and again against bad QBs. Perhaps the "top 5/elite corner" will return next week

Well said! I am watching the Chargers struggle as I am typing this and if they lose today's game, they will be coming in trying to get a bounce. Hope Asante does something by next week to justify his 'get paid' tatoo.

That's where he screwed up...if he bombs this year, no way the Pats offer what they already offered even. If he rebounds and has a killer year, obviously they won't pay him what he wants. He left a no-win situation for the Pats with regard to re-signing him. I think the only way it happens, is if he has a so-so year.

Give the guy a break. I imagine his performance is contingent on his conditioning, and we all know he isn't quite there yet.

Hopefully, he will be a little quicker in the Charger game...he'll need to be...Gates is awesome.

He had a bad game. Calling him out for the Coles TD is amusing though, since he was right there and got an arm out. Coles made a terrific catch.

The play before he wasn't there and Coles just dropped it. That was much worse coverage.

I agree this would be like his first preseason game. Now he's the one that didn't report so my sympathy is limited but I'm not going to judge how he will be all year on this one game.

This is my point...the guy holding out is likely going to end up hurting him more than if he had just shut up and showed up.

Asante will be better next week, hes got a game under him, now he can start to get in game shape and get ready for the Chargers, I am not worried about him, he got better as the season went on last year too..

The game is still business, and that can never be discounted.

I'm thankful the Pats have fielded the healthiest and most talented team I have seen in decades...finding fault with Samuel's hold out is petty at this point. He's there, and that is what really counts. He will be better next week where his skills will really be needed. Book it.

The Pats 2ndary struggled last year against the Jets with a Cotchery td and Coles td but ended the year playing strong coverage. I'm sure he will improve especially since he missed alot of time.

I agree and I hope he a great season. We can worry about next year, after Feb 2008. Until then.....he is a Patriot and our team needs him to have a good year. The better he does, the better we will do.

It's crazy to dog the guy, I tend to prefer cheering for our guys.

Give the guy a break.

Nah. I choose not to give a guy who held out for more money because he felt he was an elite corner, a break. There are almost $8 million reasons as to why he does not get a break.

Edit is an addition: Wow, anyone see the suit Jummy Johnson is wearing on Fax? Holy crap, who dressed him?

Yes, because it's so great when any of our corners get beaten. Grow up.
