Good....yes, I think so, but truthfully, Washington concerns me a little more.

Great, as NY press is saying....NO WAY.

The 8 year vet., had a very average career until landing in Chicago where he had close to three consecutive 1,000 yard seasons. How much of this Chicago "greatness" was a result of the Bears "O" line and being paired up with the younger and more solid Cedric Benson and Anthony Thomas before him?

Check his stats out before answering:

Sure, he did look good against us last year with the Bears, but, again, how much of that was due to the Bears line and blocking schemes?

Jones doesn't worry me against our defense--I consider him a second tier starter, but still a 1000k rusher...if he stays healthy

tomorrow--Wilfork owns the line of scrimmage--Jones is going to have to figure out how to get through the exploded LOS with Adalius and Seau holding the line behind Warren Wilfork and Green...Colvin and Vrabel setting the edge...

man we have talent up front

I think TJones is a good RB that will help our offense in many ways. Is he comparable to Curtis Martin? No way, not even close...But he's a good RB that can take at least a solid 15-20 carries per game that will allow us to bring in and use Leon as a 3rd down and scatback.

I think it'll be interesting to see how Mangini/Schotty utilize the two backs and their depth at WR. I'm thinking we may see some formations where both TJ and Leon are in there, with possibly a FB as well.

jones is a very solid back, very physical runner. the 2 questions I have is:

how much did he benefit from a very good chicago o- line?

the other question is

does he benefit more or less behind the jets o- line?

Well the good news is that both Clark and Bender are known for being very good run blockers. The bad news is that neither can protect the QB.

This might be a good time to say to ganggreenman ...
that i find him a good contributor here.
Sometimes irritatingly acerbic ... but that's understandable when you're in enemy territory, way outnumbered.

It's nice to have his angles
as an antidote to our own doting adoration.

yeah i figure he'll be a 1,200 yd back this season. I think little leon will provide more excitement and Big plays for you guys though. jones will be the guy pounding for yds.

Isn't Jones still recovering from a calf injury that made him miss the last 3 exhibition games? If so, Sunday's game may not be a true test. In addition, I think the Jets OL is not up to par with the Bayiz run blockiz. In compensation, Penny is a much bigger threat than Grossman passing which should open up the run.

Jeez, you pats fans have to stop flip flopping...One one post I know nothing and I'm ignorant...And on the next I'm the greatest troll to ever post here.
You people certainly are confusing me.

On a more serious note, I'm glad to be here, I think its good to get a rivals' perspective sometimes, and I'm glad I've been able to contribute.

According to most reports, if this happened in the reg. season he wouldn't have missed more then a game. So, the Jets were probably keeping him sidelined for 2 reasons: 1) To give the Pats less to go on and 2) To make sure he fully recovers before he gets reinjured...After all, it was only preseason.

Here's part of what the infamous Cimini wrote a couple days ago:

.... Jones, who missed most of the preseason with a strained calf, is expected to play against the Patriots in the opener on Sunday, but he may need a few weeks before he's at 100%. The Jets plan to use him differently than Chicago did, giving him more chances to run from spread formations.

The objective is to create space for Jones, allowing him to use his open-field skills.
Only 19% of his runs last season came with three or more wide receivers on the field, according to STATS, LLC. He averaged 5.7 yards per rush on those plays, lending credence to the Jets' plan.

"He definitely expands what we can do," says offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer, who intends to move Jones around the formation, making it harder for defenses to key on him.

If Jones has a shortcoming, he's "not a good after-contact runner," one NFC scout says. "You have to get him going downhill."

In football parlance, that means Jones needs a crease from the offensive line. Jones averaged only 1.8 yards after contact per rush, 42nd in the league, according to STATS, LLC.

He might be more reliant on good line play than the elite runners, which could be a problem if the Jets' line - a disappointment in the preseason - continues to struggle. Jones is a one-cut runner without Martin's elusiveness, according to the scout.

"I'm not going to go out there, spin around and do all this crazy stuff," Jones says. "I take advantage of what the defense gives me."

Jones isn't a highlight-film runner - neither was Martin - and he isn't the type of back that gets better with a heavier workload. In fact, statistics show that he was most effective in Chicago when averaging 16 to 18 rushes per game. That's why he should work well with Washington, who deserves at least 10 carries a week. Jones is a grinder, ....

FGSSAND - I've been saying this for a bit... That much of Jones' success the last 3 years was because of his O-line in Chicago. And I have to agree with you that Washington is a bigger threat.

What does Cimini know?
He's making a guess based on what the team tells him, doesnt make it fact.

Other then that, I think everyone knows he's not LT so he's going to need a line to block for him.
But he's a consistent 15+ carry per game RB that we didn't have last year which will allow us to use Leon Washington in a way that fits him better.

Oh, and one last thing. I disagree that Leon is a 10 carry per game back...He should get about 10 touches per game, but maybe only 3-4 carries per game this season...

He's a second tier RB, behind L.T. , L.J. Steven Jackson, and maybe a few others.

Same place Maroney is right now, difference being Maroney has the potential and oppertunity to move up to the first tier.

Many think he was misused in Chicago - and that the Jets knew this and would gear their scheme to his style...

But I think one has to seriously question if the Jets, without Kendall by choice, relying on a 1AA caliber player at LG, will be able to handle either Pass or Run blocking well enough to help him.

Beyond that I have a high level of respect for Jones - I felt a #2 for Jones was a steal for the Jets.

They didnt even give up a 2nd rounder, they swapt 2nd rounders with the Bears....

It was one of the best trades the Jets have ever made.

Jones' career numbers probably tell us much more about the relative strengths of the Arizona and Chicago O-lines than they do about Jones.

It looks to me like Jones is a pretty good runner behind a good O-line and a pretty bad runner behind a bad O-line.

I would put the Jets line closer to Arizona than I would to Chicago. Meaning I would be surprised if he averaged over 4 yards per carry this year.

It's not like the Jets STOLE Jones. Chicago gave him away for a pretty modest sum. Lovie Smith is not an idiot. He's an excellent coach and he won his conference. Still, they preferred Benson, a guy who's shown nothing, to Jones.

Jones is probably an upgrade over whoever they had playing before, but he's not going to singlehandedly turn the Jets into a decent rushing team.

Line or no line, Jones did nothing against us last year until Seau went down with an injury. The Pats D tends to be excellent against powerbacks. When the run D struggles, it often is against the change of pace backs. So I'm not too worried about Jones and agree that Leon is more of threat tomorrow.
