What do you consider to be the key match-up's for Sunday's game againts the Jets?

I'm one who believes that the game is won or lost in the trenches. So here is my key match-up.

Wilfork vs Mangold

Mangold is the Jets best OL and key to their running game. Big Vince is becoming a force at the NT position. If Big Vince can control the gaps and penetrate, it will disrupt the Jets running game. If Mangold can push Big Vince off the line, then the Jets could have success running the ball.

Even a stalemate would favor the Patriots.

I'll be watching this match-up closely from the first snap whenthe Jets have the ball.

OK, now what are the other key match-up's to watch on Sunday?

good thinking--but I would have to say that Mangold is going to need a LOT of help with 2007 Vince Wilfork.

I will go with this as the intriguing matchup of the game: NYJ defense against the Patriots new-look zone-blocking scheme. Mangini hasn't seen this beyond the info he gets from preseason and FAs.

Tom Brady vs. Kerry Rhodes

Re: Key Match-up's vs the Jets?

Asante Samuel vs. Crotchery/Coles/Pennington.

Is Asante in game shape?
Has his absence from offseason workouts and TC made him rusty?

I am also going to be VERY intrigued as to how BB is going to use AD.

Unfortunately I won't be able to see the game because my son's cub scout pack is having their "welcome back" picnic @ 2!!! BASTARDS!!!!

Re: Key Match-up's vs the Jets?

OL vs Jets blitz.

Re: Key Match-up's vs the Jets?

I'm still a little scarred from Cotchery's TD's from last year. So my concern (if you want to even call it that) is Pats DBs vs NYJ's WRs.

Re: Key Match-up's vs the Jets?

Whoever is on Cotchery. In the 3 games Cotchery did some damage:

Week 2: 6 catches 121 yards and 1TD
Week 9: 6 catches 70 yards and 1TD
Playoffs: 4 catches 100 yards and 1TD

Most of his yards came from a missed tackle that he took the distance. As soon as he catches the ball, someone needs to tackle him.

That's courtesy of Mr. Awesome, Ellis Hobbs.

If Hobbs had as much skill as he does bravado, he'd be a perrenial pro bowler.

Man Gold......BWAHAHAHAHAHA...sorry but that one gets me every time :D

Re: Key Match-up's vs the Jets?

I think one of the key match-ups is going to be the the scrub LG for the Jets against whoever is playing RDE for the Patriots.

From PFT.

On Sunday, Jets G.M. Mike Tannenbaum will likely be cringing with every snap that the offense takes, hoping that former I-AA lineman Jacob Bender or previously unwanted Ohio State product Adrien Clarke don't get thrown into the backfield from the position previously occupied by Pete Kendall.

Bender, who last year at this time was playing for Nicholls State (which we think is in the U.S.), reportedly will get the start. But the Jets' online depth chart shows Clarke as the No. 1 left guard. Either way, there's a chance that a huge leak will be sprung when the Pats come to town on Sunday -- and that quarterback Chad Pennington could be drowned by the ensuing sea of silver helmets.

As key as the O-lines performance against the blizting Jets is, having such a fundamental weak link in the Jets O-line could cause no end of problems for the Jets whether passing or running.

Re: Key Match-up's vs the Jets?

The thing I want to see is how our new receivers match up against the Jets' somewhat depleted secondary. Are any of our brand new receivers going to be able to run down field and get behind the defense? Will Brady be able to get the ball to them? A long bomb to Randy Moss or Donte Stallworth sure would be sweet!

Re: Key Match-up's vs the Jets?

Tom Brady vs. Kerry Rhodes

Not to nit pick. You know how I hate to do that.

But, wouldn't a better match-up be Moss or Stallworth against Rhodes. If they can keep him back, that would make it better for the running game.

Re: Key Match-up's vs the Jets?

Wilfork vs Mangold, if FORK wins the jets running game will be slowed, forcing them to pass more. Then we pass rush. Hopefully Wilfork may also be able to collapse the pocket some. Putting pressure on Pennigton? whos not known for dealing with it well.

Re: Key Match-up's vs the Jets?

Belichick vs. Mangini.

In the last two games, the playoff game and the mud bowl, the coaches made as much difference as in any games last year. All the pre-snap movement, no-huddle, substitutions, quick-snaps, adjustments to pressure, fourth-down fakes, trick plays, that's what makes these games so fascinating.

I remember Belichick running down the field, yelling at Wilfork to pick up the lateral.

It's going to be great.

Re: Key Match-up's vs the Jets?

I think the Pats will do well against the run but I agree w/ those who want to keep Cotchery in check, so Cotch against whoever is guarding him.

Re: Key Match-up's vs the Jets?

------I think the O Line has to prorect Brady as he was hit hard in the Mud game and that CAN NOT happen. If they keep the Jets rushers away and give Brady time, he'll cut the secondary to pieces with receivers like Welker, Moss etc.
------On the other hand, the no-huddle was very effective for the Jets and the Pats D has to stop that quick and fast and force punts. If they can get a lead, whether the Lesters go into a no-huddle will not matter as much as if
it's close.
------The secondary has to play BIG and just not let any Jets receivers get open; teh big broken play must NOT happen as it did last year. Wilson, Hobbs, Sanders etc must tackle cleanly and quickly.
-------Somehow I think ST will play a BIG role..somewhere somehow this will be a BIG advantage for the Pats.

mangold cant block wilfork by himself not many centers in the entire league cant its that simple.

Wow, if you are looking at special teams to be a big part of the game, you can't give the edge to the Pats. The Jets probably have the best or one of the top 3 special teams units in the league. Actually, that's about the only edge you can really give the Jets. I hope it comes down to special teams, that bodes well for a Jets win.

You and your nit hunts. Rhodes hurt Tommy pretty good with his blitzes, and the bad reads/blocks weren't on the OL, it was Tommy himself not moving blockers or misreading that Rhodes was coming off the edge.
