"That's a case of me being a little too colorful," he said at his Wednesday news conference. "You guys wonder why I stand up here and go, 'Yep, no, and maybe so.' Bill's and my conversation should stay between Bill and myself."

And how does Mills feel about it all?

Mills didn't want to comment on being in the middle of it.

"I have a lot of respect for coach Belichick and Scott Pioli and the whole Patriots organization," he said. "I don't know what happened and I'm here now, that's all that matters."

Such strange irony in how the press gets upset with BB for giving them nothing, but they prove time and time again that it simply doesn't pay to go behind stock answers.

Sounds like the Cleveland Browns Belichick.

In Cleveland, BB didn't give out much but was extremely adversarial. Somtime between hc jobs, he decided to treat the press as part of the job. He still gives them nothing, but now is at the point where he often jokes about giving them nothing. He always has this little smile, when he responds to an injury question by saying the injury report will be out Wednesday.

You can still tell, though, when he gets annoyed, and it is usually when asked about something that hits really close to home. And like every head coach in the NFL, past and present, he is mch easier to deal with after a win than a loss. As it should be. Who wants a hc who isn't extremely upset by a loss.

Actually, I think it would have been a mistake to reveal even that much. You never discuss the quiet backroom byplay of your profession in a press conference!

Have you ever, ever heard an exec tell the media "team X called because they're considering dealing player Y, but we declined the offer because we think they'll end up cutting him anyway"? Unthinkable. That's not for public consumption. Now up the ante 10 times in this case because it was about negotiations for illicit collusion! What the HECK was he thinking?

Bingo. Teams hate to give up even marginal guys they worked with and also need small favors (trade for position) come draft time.

Note how the Pats relationship with Chicago played out. We get big Ted for our nose tackle for a 4th, Chicago gets a pretty good pick for moving one spot so we draft Warren.

The thing is, our relationship with the Chicago F.O. means we can make a quick move and the favor will be returned later if one side got the better of the deal.

If Childress wasn't a douche, he could have said privately, "can't guarantee we won't take him, he could make our team", then BB could decide based on that.

Being able to get small favors when you need them adds up big time, which is why childress is probably doomed. I'm sure what friends he has called him, as another poster said. Still, if he's that tone deaf (unnecesary dumping on culpepper after he left won't help him with players) he's doomed.

I think the relationship between the NFL coach and NFL coach is a lot more intense and high strung than the looser more relaxed relationship between front office guys on opposing teams.

And I think BB has done a tremendous job of limiting/controlling access or information flow to the media from all employees of the New England Patriots.

I think what BB learned in Cleveland was the only thing accomplished by circling the wagons around his team as tightly as possible from all outside influences (other NFL teams, front office personnel, the media, etc.), was that BB winds up choking himslef.

So while everything, short of the weather, is a controllable in BB's world, he learned from his experience in Cleveland which elements needed more focus and resources in controlling and which elements required a little less.
