Here’s something to look for on the news tonight. When asked about the release of wide receiver Reche Caldwell and the possibility of Caldwell going to the Jets to help New York, linebacker Mike Vrabel said, “Reche Caldwell barely knew our offense.”

Interesting. Certainly the quote of the day compared to most quotes that we hear from the Patriots.

Wow. That's harsh.

That seems like a silly thing to say about a) a former teammate b) a potential competitor and c) the team's leading receiver last year.

Chris - do you have any more than that? Like what the full context of the conversation was. Did Vrabel expand on anything?

He was probably sarcastically referring to the short stay in NE vs the inability to
know the offense and someone with an agenda took it out of context deliberately.
It doesn't sound like something Vrabel would do to a teammate, even a former one.
He is a pretty loyal teammate and, if I am correct, the player union rep. He is
also pretty savvy about the media as well. I will be surprised if it is anything
other than more media crap.

When Vrabes speaks, you don't need subtitles.

d) someone who might be back here in 4 days when Randy Moss throws a hissy fit after being ignored by Brady on three straight plays

Damn, that Vrabel can hit hard.:D

Exactly.

Useless without context.

Maybe this is out of context -- it's a quote from the media after all. Maybe Vrabes was asked if there was concern that the Jets were recruiting Caldwell to gain insight into the Pats week 1 game plan and he joking replied that “Reche Caldwell barely knew our offense.”

Let's not go crazy over a snippet of a quote.

If Reche hardly knew the Offense after a 1 year in the system then it seems to follow that Moss, Stalworth, and Welker would know even less.
Not something that you would expect Vrabel to say to a reporter. lots of strange stuff hapening in NE this last week.
Not to mention the game Suday mite be played in a hurricane.

Knowing how Vrabel likes to joke with the media and rib other people, I am guessing Vrabel said that in jest. Vrabel is having a version of his jersey sequened for Mike Goldberg who lost a bet with Mike Golicon Mike and Mike in the Morning where Goldberg needs to wear a sequen Patriots jersey to the Pats/Jets game although he won't be there so he will wear on the air on Friday. Also, he made headlines ribbing Belichick a few weeks back.

It may be irresponsible if that is the context he is speaking to not clarify he is joking.

Or is it possible that he was cut for not being the brightest bulb on the tree, and missing assignments?

This really does bring up an interesting question.

Maybe unbeknownst to the outside world, the Pats not only had sub-par talent in the receiving corp last year, but also had to scale down the complexity of the offense because Reche was not able to absorb it properly.

That also probably continued into this season and hence his place on the depth chart was downgraded. Maybe Washington was picking it up quicker.

Also I recall at mini-camp, Brady was saying how well Gaffney had picked up and acclimated to the offense this year.

I think his fate was sealed when he kept droping pass after pass in the Colts game. Rumor has it that BB has a long memory and can hold a grudge.

Most of the camp reports didn't have Reche having problems. I have never heard Vrabel publically call out a former teammate or even a hated rival's player. I gotta believe Vrabel was joking because even if he truly believed it, he would never say something like this publically if he was serious.

It only "follows" if you assume all players are of equal intelligence and football smarts.

Or maybe he's disgusted at Caldwell whoring himself out to a bitter rival. "Here Coach Mangina, this is everything I know..." And of course after Caldwell gives them what little he knew, he leaves without a contract.
