Randy Moss...the most potent Wide Receiver the Patriots have since...?

OK, I understand Moss has yet to play in a real game as a Patriot. But let's say given what you know of his abilities and if he does meet our expectations.

Would Moss be the most potent Patriot WR since Irving Fryar? Daryl Stingley? Stanley Morgan?

Seeing Moss' career from my eyes, and I've started watching football in 1985, I can't remember any Pats WR in a long time that can do what Randy does on the field. My immediate thought says "Terry Glenn," but I know must be wrong here.

I remember when the Pats traded for Moss I was awaiting any sportswriter to promptly compare him to past great Pats WRs (saying "Moss could very well be the most effective wide receiver for the Patriots since [whoever's the last great Pats WR name here]", but I couldn't find any.

I'll hold my comparisons until he gets half the season under his belt. Remember, it's the Randy Moss of 2007, and I'm not saying his play has slipped or improved. It's that he's never played with Tom Brady and been combined with this type of team. On top of that, he's been in the training room for the majority of pre-season. Let's see a healthy Moss at work with the team. While I have a lot of optimism, we won't really know until he shows it on the field.

For Moss to be even considered in the same sentence as Stanley Morgan he would have to have a 1,500 yard season and many TDs for me to put him at the level or over Morgan after only 1 season or two.

I don't think 40 year old guys like me will ever live long enough to see a more consistent performing WR in a Patriots uniform like the 'Steamer'

If by potent you mean, most unstoppable WR, it has to be Troy Brown. Granted i am only 23 and have not seem most of that list play. Troy is always open.

Although Troy is easily one of the best all around football players and greatest Patriots of all time in the mold of a Gina Cappiletti, he is far from being an "unstoppable" receiver.

If he can give us anywhere near what Glenn gave us in his rookie year, the season will be a huge success.

As far as the Steamer, someone should have a look at his yards per catch before any comparison is made.

Moss is the most talented receiver to ever play the game. Not the best (that belongs to Jerry Rice, who is the single best player of all time), but the most athletically gifted and talented. This team has never had a receiver the caliber of Randy Moss.

On paper, Moss is the best receiver the Pats have ever had. In reality, to be determined.

He's as good as he wants to be and I think he wants to have a legacy instead of untapped potential.
He knows the last 2 years has been wasted and is hurting his bid to ever hope to sniff the football hall of fame.
He has grown up he's matured he's rested he's ready, wow Beoli is amazing at picking up the right guy for the playoff push.

Morgan played in an entirely different era.
You just cant compare him when he was playing on teams that rushed the ball 600 times in a season.
Its hard to say what Morgan would have done in a passing era, because his reception totals typically werent that high even for the era, but on the other hand it would be interesting to see what numbers he would have put up if he was on teams that threw it 600 times.
I'd say he was overall about top 15 in the NFL in his prime, but may have been more in a different offense that threw more.

One of my favorite quotes was a Pat coach (may have been Earhardt, but I'm not sure who) said that when Morgan catches the ball count 1,2,6 because if they havent caught him by the time you count to 2, its gonna be 6 for the Patriots.

As far as Moss, I dont really care what his individual numbers are, as long as the pass offense achieves what it looks like it can.
Whether Moss, or Stallworth, or Welker, or Washington, or Gaffney or Watson, or Brown and Jackson later are doing the catching doesnt matter to me.
My instinct is that Moss is going to catch somewhere around 70 passes, have a high ypc, be over 1000 yards, and be a TD threat, getting 12-14.
However if Moss is on the sidelines, and our offense produces with Stallworth, Welker, Gaffney, etc sharing the load, thats just fine too.
