Did anybody see his comments on Meriweather last night? To paraphrase some of them:

1. Meriweather is not the answer at safety.
2. He is not particularly fast and does not get to the ball quickly.
3. He will probably stick around for a couple of years, then fade away.
4. If he weren't a 1st round pick, he would have been cut this week.

What does Smerlas have against this guy? He was constantly attacking him during the few short minutes of the segment.

if those quotes are true he was either being sarcastic, drunk, or way off. Merriweather played corner the first couple games and he's only played their in limited time in college. I thought he did quite well in the Giants game at safety, his name was being called frequently as he was around the ball making plays. If anything it was called too much and that's the fault of the front 7 for not stopping the run and causing Merriweather to come up.

Fred is a racist and because of Meriweather's somewhat thug reputation coming from U of Miami, of coruse it will be an opportunity for Fred to find a conventient black man to pick on. Being a first round choice, Meriweather is the perfect target with some light on him in which Fred can veil his comments.

Fred is a dope if he thinks he's not fast.. Next to Mike Richardson, Meriweather's name was mentioned all the time..

I heard those comments also. He was dead serious when he said them.

Sometimes Smerlas has some pretty good insights but I truly don't agree with him here.

Looking back on the past 6 years, I haven't seen too many safeties come through here with the tools he has.

He's plenty fast.

The kid came in and spent most of his time at CB getting acclimated to that spot, and then had to reverse gears and get acclimated to safety in the Pats style of defense.

He'll definitely be better than James Sanders. So I don't know where Fred got this from.

Probably the bad series he had against the Giants.

Fred is not a racist. He has a lot of connections with players, coaches and management on this team and if he said it he said it because he believes it, and someone told him that. One of Fred's best friends is Jack Mula, who negotiates contracts for the team. While we are all rooting for Meriweather, he hasn't really done anything yet, so it's hard to say that Fred is wrong at this point.

Exactly so how can Fred make a statement like that????

No one can say anything good or bad.

Fred has more inside info on this team than just about anyone in the NE press. Last year, before training camp, he mentioned the positive buzz in the organization about Maroney. This year he probably is aware of some scuttlebutt about Meriweather. Fred is a big time homer and friend of BB and he has no reason to criticize Meriweather unless he is aware of something. Let's hope he's wrong.

IMO he is a racist. And an idiot to boot.

That is a pretty bad label to to hang on anyone without any proof. Perhaps you can come up with that proof or apologize for using that term without it.

Smerlas is a fraud. On his radio show in Buffalo, he'll say that Meriweather is the next Ed Reed, you watch. The guy is a joke.

Considering the type of persecution the mere accusation of racism causes an individual, you might want to provide some type of actual proof before carelessly flinging such an accustion around.

Without any proof? I have been listening to the guy on 'EEI for 10 years. No, I don't have him wearing a robe or anything. That isn't my definition. If its yours, that is fine. I don't know what exactly you'd accept as "proof".

I would accept anything that proves that he is a racist. Give me an example of a racist remarks that he has made (this should be fun).

Sorry, I don't keep a log book. Racism isn't necessarily overt. Sometimes a racist doesn't even realize he is one. They aren't all cross burners. Its my opinion. You can disagree, that is fine. But I also disagree with your convenient requirements. Makes it easy on Fred or anyone else. You're free to feel he isn't one. I am free to feel he is one, based on years of listening to his opinions, who he rips and why and positions. That is my proof. So if you want to analyze it, I guess you'd have to get a tape of every single time he has ever been on 'EEI and take it in total. If this isn't good enough for you, sorry. But you just look at it different. My opinion is my opinion. I'm pretty confident I'm right. Smerlas is one.

Listen to Smerlas all the time, not sure he is a "racist", but is more of an extreme right winger who is not very tolerant of anyone who does not feel the same way. He is a big flag waver, on a big Harley.

This is beyond irresponsible. You call someone a racist without supporting evidence of any kind based on your "feeling". What do you have, a secret decoder ring?

Irresponsible? Give me a ******* break. I have listened to the guy and have an opinionl. He is a public figure. Its not a "feeling"...I told you its based on who he rips and why, his opinions and things he says. Do I write them all down? No I don't. Sorry, but it sure makes it easy to say oh there is no proof. Convenient. I know he made some anti-gay remark on a NY radio station. That isn't racism, but if he had never said that on the radio I guess to you that would mean he isn't anti-gay. When that was pretty predictable before that incident too.

Whatever. You want to defend him for whatever reason. I am free to listen to what he says and his opinions on people and form an opinion without being required to carry around a notebook to form that opinion. I am perfectly comfortable that 10 years or more of listening is sufficiently fair.

I'd like you to give your definition of racism so we can at least understand what you mean when you make that statement.
