This is from the Star Tribune in Minn. Man, BB doesn't mess around!!

The Vikings were awarded former New England TE Garrett Mills today on waivers, according to a report in the Boston Globe.

Mills was a fourth-round draft pick last year but was placed on injured reserve midway through the season. The Patriots wanted to put him on their practice squad so badly that coach Bill Belichick called Vikings coach Brad Childress this morning about him. As Childress recounted during an appearance on WCCO-AM’s Softballs with Sid, Belichick apparently was suggesting he would claim a Vikings castoff if the Vikings did not back off of his player.

According to Childress, Belichick said: “Is there any way that you don’t take our guy and we don’t take your guy?”

Childress said he replied: “Well, I’m really interested in your guy. We’ll have to let our guy slide.”

“He didn’t really care for that,” Childress said. “He was trying to leverage. You always find out who is honest and straightforward.”

UPDATE: Belichick wasn’t lying. The Patriots were the team that claimed LB David Herron, whom the Vikings liked as a special teams guy and hoped to stash on the practice squad.

Whatever they say.

Re: Signing Herron WAS revenge says Star Tribune

This won't go away easy for BB we all know what happens when you mess with his Tight Ends!
Childress better watch his back you know damn well that next time the Patriots play the Vikings BB will order his team to kill show no mercy and even if they have the lead late in the fourth quarter they will run up the score anyone they can!

Re: Signing Herron WAS revenge says Star Tribune

And when we cut Herron, he can sign whatever Practice Squad contract he wants.

Re: Signing Herron WAS revenge says Star Tribune

I just hope it's true.

Sometime or other, everybody gotta learn,
they oughtn't mess w' ya.

Re: Signing Herron WAS revenge says Star Tribune

The fact that Childress would openly discuss behind the scenes personnel moves with the media shows the massive gap in quality, experience, and good judgment between the two respective coaches.

Re: Signing Herron WAS revenge says Star Tribune

Yup,

You got that right......

Re: Signing Herron WAS revenge says Star Tribune

Sure, we should waste three or four roster spots on useless players. That'll really show them!

I can't imagine Belichick is too happy about what you mention above - and a number of coaches have learned the hard way that YOU DON'T F*CK WITH BELICHICK.

Who says he's useless : "whom the Vikings liked as a special teams guy".

Or are ST useless now ?

Re: Signing Herron WAS revenge says Star Tribune

also here are his pro day numbers

Gil Brandt, of NFL.com, reports Michigan State LB/FB Dave Herron measured a height of 6-foot-1 and a weight of 239 pounds at his Pro Day. He ran the 40-yard dash in 4.68 seconds and 4.67 seconds, the short shuttle in 4.42 seconds and the three-cone drill in 7.03 seconds. He measured a 34 1/2-inch vertical jump, a 10-foot-2 broad jump and completed 19 repetitions on the 225-pound bench press. Herron took part in drills at both positions and caught the ball well.

Obviously his quickness isnt so hot but he has some decent speed, and if he sticks on the roster then he has the versatility BB likes (LB, FB and ST play)

He also became a leader of the defense at Michigan State. Character guys are always welcome

So if we wanted Mills badly enough to warrant a phone call request and a threat realized, it does beg the question, "Why not just keep him?" I know the answer is likely "because we wanted to keep him on the PS, and thought we could and miscalculated," but then I'd like to know why we didn't just hold him (with one of the open spots we had), and then, if we want to try and sneak him onto the PS, cut him in a day or two when other teams' rosters are a bit more settled?

If Belichick wanted Mills so bad, couldn't he have just kept him? He had a free roster spot, and eventually re-signed Rivers.

Seems to me if he was really so hot about keeping Mills he would have just kept him. He may have talked to Childress as mentioned, but I bet Childress is exaggerating what happened.

Re: Signing Herron WAS revenge says Star Tribune

ST players are definitely NOT useless. I have absolutely no problem with picking up a top STer, even as a backup.

Is Herron really a better STer than Wesley or Mays? These were two players who would have been useful as emergency position players as well as STers.

Do you REALLY believe that of all the 600 players cut and the others available, that Herron was the best STer pioli could get? or the best potential at ILB? IMHO, at best Herron is getting a week look-see while pioli decides who to sign next Tuesday. Or perhaps it really is simply a temper tantrum by bb.

That's one way to think about it. I sorta agree, but chances are, even if the Vikes got some other TE, and we tried to "sneak" Mills onto the PS, they would have done the same a few days later. Also, I think the best time to "sneak" somebody to the PS is today since so many teams dump many players, IMO. But you have a good point, it is just a gamble that was worth taking in BB's mind.

Re: Signing Herron WAS revenge says Star Tribune

It's all interesting..I'm a bit shocked this actually got out..maybe exaggerated.. Well not really surprised...as I don't think fans really know of all the back room sorts of things...sort of like seeing sausage made... So??
Herron may be versatile, a leader and better in a 3-4..no problem with that..BUT why didn't they keep Mills?? Just does not add up at all...

Re: Signing Herron WAS revenge says Star Tribune

What good is it to sneak to try to sneak a player on the Practice Squad?

If we really wanted Mills, we would have signed him to the 53, instead of Dave Herron, or instead of Rivers.

First, any other team can sign him to their squad. They have the same rights as we do. We already didn't think Mills was ready. Maybe another team could convince him that he had a shot at their roster once he learned the playbook.

Second, at any point, any team can decide that a player like Mills is worth a roster spot, in order to give a few weeks tryout with their team.

Re: Signing Herron WAS revenge says Star Tribune

It all sounds stupid to me.

I think Childress got his buns burned by BB last year and apparently had bad blood with him before. This could be a pathetic attempt to act like he got something over on BB by picking up a guy we cut even though we had two roster spots available.

Could be he was trying to not have to pay these guys full salary.

Besides those two reasons, I'll stick with stupid as an explanation.

And I'll bet dollars to donuts Mills is available on waivers before the season is out. He has no position.

Who do you think will be cut first? Mills or Herron?

I didn't see anyone pickup on this so I restated it. Don't we save paying full salary if we cut by a certain date?
