One poster on the main thread speculates the Moss rumors were started by the Patriots organization to send a message to Moss to shape up or risk being dumped.

What if instead they were started by the Pats FO to distract the Jets and cause them to wonder whether he'd even suit up against them Sunday, much less be a featured weapon?

I like that idea! :D

I'm a trial attorney and an elected official, and I minored in History in college. I've been on both the receiving and giving end of this type of tactic. 'Playing dumb,' 'Playing possom' are variants of this approach.

i thought that it was either complete B.S. or the pats are doing it so nobody knows what's going on with moss and it will be a surprise to see him start sunday.

Especially when Moss' agent, when contacted about the rumors, said he'd heard nothing about it, and was planning on seeing him play at the Meadowlands Sunday.

The interesting thing is you've rarely seen Moss be the subject of rumors before this.

He's always been the quiet, "under the radar" type.

If you don't write for Jay Leno
... you should.

Re: Moss Rumors . . . Disinformation?

If there were any real controversy involving Randy Moss, would he not be speaking to the media. This is Randy freakin' Moss, if there were any real problem, the world would know.

I think the fact that Moss hasn't stepped on the field for more than a month would be enough to cause the Jets to question whether he'll be on the field, wouldn't you?

I've got some theories about why the rumor was started but seeing as there's already doubt as to whether Moss will be a go next week, there's no need to create a rumor about a cut to achieve what's already been achieved.

It wasn't the Patriots' FO that started the rumor. It was some competing GM, hoping to cause trouble.

I hadn't heard that... do you have a link?

If it was another GM they might have done us the favor of keeping Randy on the straight and narrow, letting him know the consequences if he takes plays off.

I'd like to thank them if that's the case.

I think the rumors mite of com from BB saying get your ass on the field and lets play, or I will cut you.
Seems like BB is willing to give Moss a chance, But BB aint going to put up with any crap from Moss either.
Pats don't need him anyway.

You see I don't think it is really aimed at the Jets because I think Moss will be limited in that game because of his lack of practice and playing time.

I think this rumor could be anything from actually true to the Pats leaking it to get Moss to fly straight to a league source making mountains out of mole hills. I just don't see it really affecting the Jets' game all that much.

No way. If the Pats wanted to leak something, they would leak it through Reiss or someone like that, not thse boneheads that started the rumor. No conspiracy theory, just some morons making stuff up.

Nothing this off season even hints of a problem with Randy Moss. To the contrary, he has been a model citizen, has the support of all the Pats, and, before the hamstring problem, was working hard.

I think he'll play on Sunday and will be happy contributing to the team in any way he can.

I agree and I'll continue to drink what you're drinking. :eat3:

If I were the front office I'd want plausible deniability... Randy is NOT going to be happy about these rumors... giving it to Reiss lets him KNOW where it came from.

I doubt the Pats are starting rumors in order to throw the Jets off week 1. The Jets will prepare for Moss whether or not he plays. Does the injury report ring a bell? Does any team really take it seriously? Mangini and the Jets expect Moss to start opposite Stallworth on Septemper 9th. However, I think some moron sports writer wanted to speculate that Moss would get cut because he hasn't seen the field or practiced for quite some time. I'm sure he pulled "Moss on the bubble of being cut" straight out of his ass and hoped Moss would indeed get cut, so the sports writer could say "I told you it wouldn't work out in New England."

Or maybe some hack with an axe to grind, and a belief in 'Evil Randy', was hoping to bait or prod Moss into some stupid reaction. Trying to get Moss to screw himself and get a good story to boot.

Mite Of Com? Wasn't that the original name of Gillette stadium?
