My take:

Roster spot # 52:
Samuel will be activated for the Jets game, so there is no sense to keeping a guy only to cut him in a couple days.

Roster spot # 53:
BB intends to sign a DT to have until Seymour comes off PUP, probably Kimo von Oelhoffen, or maybe even Bobby Hamilton, both of whom were cut by Mangini. BB will sign one of them (or someone else) after the first game. The reasoning is that if Kimo, Hamilton or any vested vet is on the opening day roster, the Pats are on the hook for his entire salary. If they sign him after opening day, they only pay him for games he plays in.

I'd go with the extra DL too. Though, I am worried about depth at lb. If any of the lb's have a lingering injury. We might have to go with 8ol instead of 9.
With Pats style of offense. I can see another te instead of a 6th wr. Bring Rivers back if we can deal Caldwell for a draft pick. Very deep team. Hate to lose Rodney and BIG Sey for a couple of weeks. But, we have capable replacements in J.Sanders and J.Green.

I think this has to do with injuries and what they MIGHT need. A lot easier to keep a spot open then cut a player later. It is possible that Samuel will be activated, but on the otehr hand, if he is NOT ready, why would they do that immediately? My guess is a wait and see sort of thing. Oelhoffen or Hamilton seems like a possibility, but realistically with 6 linemen, would they be better than a Smith who has played strong this preseason? Maybe as a backup NT..yes!! (Certainly more possible if either Warren or Wright are still injured..)

I would love to see Bobby Hamilton.

My guess?

#52 - Samuel within the next few days.

#53 - the Practice Squad Player of the Week just for Week 1. After the game, the Pats will release this player, re-sign him to the practice squad, and sign a veteran (Von Oelhoffen, Hamilton, Chad Brown, etc.), since their salary won't be guaranteed anymore.

What I'm thinking is that if the Jets cut Kimo and Bobby at a very weak position in their case, it tells me something about those two players. I can't think of a guy we can sign who will be better than Jarvis. Now in case there's another injury, it's a different story.

Because BB likes to keep at least one roster spot as a flexible position. The 52nd spot is for Samuel, the 53rd is a flexible spot that he can sign someone as necessary/needed at any point. It's just good business--better to have flexibility than to lock up a player like Justin Rogers. All roster predictions really ought to have 52 players, not 53.

Speculation on Von Oelhofen...signed to the Eagles...1 year deal...I think they will see what's happening with injuries/players available and sign a player or two. I do not think automatically that Samuel will be part of the 53 this week.

I do notknowif the waivers sare irrevocable. Undercutting allows the Pats to reclaim a playe rthat they stand to lose if he doesn't clear waivers and make the PS...

I don't think so. He hasn't left a roster spot open cut down day since 2000. That year he said he didn't have 53 NFL-quality players. That isn't the case this year.

Whether or not he cuts to 52, that last spot is a rotational player--if he's not cut in pre-season he often goes soon after.
