I'm honestly not sure.

I'm not saying he's not worthy, just that I definitely had Rogers higher on my list than Gutierrez.

FWIW, though, Gutierrez was actually out on ST on Thursday. . . .

Any thoughts?

I guess anyone else they'd have kept wouldn't have contributed much anyways.

Maybe they think Rogers will have an easier time getting to the practice squad. They both looked good in the preseason games but a QB who plays with poise as a rookie might have more value than an OLB. Plus, the Pats do have a track record with late round QBs. ;)

Probably because they feared another team would grab him before he got to the PS, whereas they have no fear of that scenario with "Speed Dial Vinny".

Obviously, the coaches liked what they saw. And Cassel is a trade candidate for this off-season.

IMO they plan on trading Cassel next offseason, and want to groom the next backup. if you watch some of these preseason games, Gutierrez actually looked better than half the Qbs out there. He was a Michigan QB, had some experience slinging the ball in college, and he would probably have been picked up by another team had he been cut. Scott knows when someone is wanted elsewhere, through his own contacts around the league and the player's agent. Rogers didn't show enough to attract interest elsewhere. He's not an NFL DE, and he's a project at OLB. He'll make it to the practice squad along with the other 2nd day picks.

My voye is with this scenari. The final 53 is likely to change a little by da Jets game.

That's what I was thinking. They wanted to protect Gutierrez at least for the time being and can bring back Vinny anytime. This also gets me thinking, though, that perhaps the wisdom of Vinny's input on the sidelines isn't considered all that valuable.

My guesses:

- This is the perfect time for them to add a young developmental QB. Cassel is 100% out the door after 2008, it would be terrific to have another cheap young QB with 2 years in the system waiting behind him.

- A dirt-cheap QB with potential is a thing not to be taken lightly. If you think a Gutierrez is easy to come by, compare him to Corey Bramlet.

- And maybe what it comes down to is that, given a QB and LB of equal promise, a QB is wayyyy more valuable.

He's been around forever. He knows the best restaurants in every NFL city.

Blasphemy!

I'm very surprised that they cut Rogers given that he was higher on your list than Gutierrez.

Seriously, though, we already knew that; if his advice were that valuable, why did BB start 2006 with just two QBs?

Your sarcasm is much appreciated, since I think I implied in the OP that I wasn't calling their decision a mistake.

I don't think it was ever going to be Gutierrez or Rogers. It was either Gutierrez or Vinny. I doubt the Pats would have gone into the season again with only 2 QBs. That was a hot trend in the NFL for about 2 minutes. Now most teams carry three QBs again.

Following that trend didn't hurt us much last year. In fact it was a great move.

I think Vinny was an automatic cut. He isn't going anywhere. Nor is he likely to improve with much practice time.

ummm im going to go out on a limb here and say....... maybe........so he can be one of our quarterbacks?

I don't think the extra roster spot helped or hurt us, but if Brady went down for a long period of time it could.

The fact of the matter is with or without Guttierez, we could have kept Rogers on the roster. Obviously, Belichick felt he was better off risking him to go to the PS and let him develop for a year.

Probably cause BB does not have tons of faith in Cassell's ability should Brady go down,He needs another alternative if Cassell goes in and sucks.

Personally I would rather see Guiterrez give it a try than Cassell,I am just not high up on Matt and nothing I have seen in preseason from matt makes me any more confident he is the right guy at #2.

That goes for keeping him and the chance of losing him trying to get him to the practice squad. He won't compete this year with Cassel but the chance of losing him and the consequence if he were lost is just higher than that of others.
