Now it’s time for a mea culpa. I made a mistake in today’s paper, misinterpreting a passage in the current issue of Sports Illustrated that mentions S Kerry Rhodes and Patriots coach Bill Belichick. I attributed a quote to Belichick that he did not say; it was used by the writer as a hypothetical quote.

I like Belichick. I’ve known him for 10 years and I certainly never would knowingly print an erroneous quote just to make a person look bad. It was a misinterpretation. I pride myself on accuracy and, this time, I goofed. I have apologized to all parties, and I will apologize to Rhodes the next time I see him.

What can I say? Today, I deserve to be on waivers.

That's a nice apology. Everyone screws up.

Good on him to issue an apology, but I would certainly expect more due diligence on his part when quoting other sources.

The Power This Board Yields Is Limitless!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What a complete moron this guy is he tried to make some interesting comments was proved wrong and is now eating crow.

I'll never read another article from this man.

The guy made a mistake...he stepped up and apologized.

He apologized to Belichick? Wonder what that conversation was like.

Good job, Cimini. I respect that he made an apology to his readers and the parties involved.

A few elephants in the room, however:

1) Why is the article still up on the New York Daily News website without any link to the apology/correction? The apology/correction is in a completely different place on the website (Cimini's "Jets Stream" blog - -which is nowhere near the inaccurate original article - - in fact, you have to hit a separate link after already linking to the original innaccurate article).

2) Why did it take more than 6 hours of e-mails and phone calls from all over the country before ANY mention of apology/correction was made by anyone at the Daily News? Did the Sports Editor with whom Pats 1 (or someone else here) spoke this morning around 11:30 am just sit on this for 6 hours?????

3) Tomase corrected his reporting of the innaccurate article by Cimini within 10 minutes of public reaction. Cimini (or the sports editors of the Daily News if Cimini was indisposed) couldn't do likewise within 6 hours of public reaction?

I agree. If he had ignored it (ala borges) or brushed it off, I would have more venom towards him. He was guilty of some sloppy journalism. I'm satisfied with the apology.

Hey, if we're going to give Rodney credit for an upfront apology, Cimini deserves the same treatment, I guess. Not sure if I'm buying it, but it's better than being obstinate or something.

Good job, Cimini. Nice apology.

Good job on the phone today.

Seemed like we were able to get the word out enough that he had to issue something.

It's an honest mistake, not the end of the world.
