One of the more unpredictable spots heading into the final cutdown...

- Vinnie's a veteran presence, a great set of eyes on the sidelines

- Gutierrez has shown impressive poise given his inexperience, and this would be a good time to start developing a future backup

- They started last year with just two, roster spots are valuable, and Vinnie could always be a phone call away once inevitable injuries open space on the 53.

Your predictions?

For the short term, Testaverde is the obvious choice. The trouble is

that Matt Cassel is in the 3rd year of a 4 year contract and may want

to play for a team where he has a chance to be the starting quarterback.

To have a replacement ready for 2009, we have to start grooming a young

quarterback. Matt Gutierrez does not have the skill level of Vinnie just

yet but neither was Tom Brady as talented as Drew Bledsoe in 2000.

Matt does not look nervous and out of place when he is on the field and

is definitely not the second coming of Rohan Davey. If we cut him and

another team sees his potential, the Pats lose an entire year for

developing their future, young quarterback.

I'll give vinny the QB#4 spot for one week while we still have the asante roster exemption.

After we go up by 2 TDs or more against the Jets (probably in the first half), they will throw old Intercepteverde in there so he can get his yearly TD pass out of the way.

Then, when Asante is activated (right after the first game), they cut Vinny and put him on the shadow roster.

Realistically VT will be #3 and Gutierrez will be on the PS. I'm not really worried about any team swooping down to grab GT off the practice squad.

Carry 2. Vinny on stand-by. Gutierrez to PS.

Several years ago, at this time of year, patsfans were wringing our collective hands over this same topic.
AndyJohnson chimed in with a powerful instructional argument insisting
that no subprime #3 QB whose own team was willing to cut him
would seem so attractive to any other team
that they would sacrifice a roster spot to snag that #3.

First, they have THEIR OWN chosen prospects ...
who, moreover, have had the entire spring, t/c, and preseason with them
... to acquire THEIR system.

Any newcomer cast off by another NFL club would be unable, as a practical matter,
to be of any help to them until the following season.

There was more to Andy's argument. And i've been paying attention to this question ever since.
He's right.
All the available evidence is that other teams DO NOT pick up castoff QBs just as the season starts.

Vinny isn't really a QB. He's just a fan who sometimes gets to play in games.

I want Vinny in there. It's always good for Tom to have a grizzled vet around. He's like another coach.

Fine, let him get paid to hang out and be a spare coach... only let's not WASTE a roster spot on him!

Pepper Johnson isn't our #8 LB

Just keep Guiterez and sign Testaverde as a coach so he's around if you need him.

I believe Vinny would be guaranteed his salary should he be on the roster for the Jets game.

- So, show of good faith now knowing they will be bringing him back as the playoff run heats up?
- Or save the cap room to roll forward for a Ty Warren-like run at Vince next season and get Vinny for the weekly rate when he's needed?

As psycho has noted, the risk is low to waive Gutierrez and bring him on the Practice Squad, but in my mind he's a legitimate successor to Cassel.

How about Gutierrez on ST - he was running like he could tackle?

They still need 7 inactive and 1 third QB for game day, I'd take a DB or LB over Gutierrez in that situation.

Guitierezz will go the PS , and Vinny will be on board as the number 3...

This is what I thought earlier in the pre-season. Now, I'm concerned he might be claimed by another team should he be cut with an idea of adding him to the PS later.

When I did my 53 man roster, i had only 2 QB's. If BB decides to keep 3 that will really screw me up.

We can Keep Vinny for later on in the season if needed. And Matt G to the PS, hopefully.

Welcome aboard, Mr. Gutierrez!

I'm seriously psyched for this kid...he was my pet QB in the draft, and I've always argued that if a developmental QB looked good the Pats would protect him on the 53. Congratulations to him for making it happen!!!
