Dirk Johnson
Sav Roca

Roca is 6'5" Australian Rugby player who has been booming kicks and is tough as nails

Johnson is experienced with a really good leg.

think the Patriots would consider either of them after final cut?

They might try and find a way to get them both on the roster.

Personally, I think this years Pats team believes that a punter who can kick with precision and accuracy is of far greater value than a guy who can boom punts. Why? because you gotta figure that this years Pats offense will be moving the chains with consistant regularity meaning our punter will likely be asked to pin our opponents inside the 20 with precision punting out of bounds or with high hang times much more than he'll be asked to boom us out of bad field position with a 70 yard missile.

I think this year we are going with precision and accuracy ahd high hang times out of our punter. If last night's account is any indication this Hanson guy looks the part.

my bet is on NO.

I would be inclined to agree with your assessment, but for the fact that the Pats tried so hard to hold onto Sauerbrun, who is known for everything but his precision and accuracy.

I thought that was done to annoy the crap out of Denver....

True perhaps, but at that stage of the game their job descrioption for a punter might have been far different than it is now.

LOL. I think that's true.
Also why let a rival team improve itself if you can help it?

Oh I don't know if Hanson is a lock. Didn't he average only 35 yards per punt?
I say if you can improve the P position, do it.
Miller hasn't been all that impressive.

Actually, that's every year with Belichick, Bob.

That's how "he who won't be named" hung around so long.

Very possible. They put in a waiver claim on another punter before they were awarded Hansen, so I have to conclude they were not interested in Hanser pper se but rather that they had decided to get rid of Baugher. I suspect the reasons might have gone beyond anything we saw on the field.

4-13-NE 43 (4:32) C.Hanson punts 37 yards to NYG 20, Center-L.Paxton, fair catch by R.McQuarters.
4-5-NYG 38 (3:20) C.Hanson punts 35 yards to NYG 3, Center-L.Paxton, downed by NE-D.Wesley.
4-10-NE 19 (1:28) C.Hanson punts 45 yards to NYG 36, Center-L.Paxton, fair catch by A.Ross.
4-9-NYG 28 :)31) C.Hanson punts 23 yards to NYG 5, Center-L.Paxton, out of bounds.

Two punts downed inside the 6, and a 45-yarder with no return.
He should have kicked his first punt another 10 yards; otherwise, an excellent display of situational punting.

The last one wasn't downed per se, it was angled out of bounds and was still in the air when it went out. That's another skill BB would like, so I think Hansen makes it.

I was in section 238 and that punt was headed almost directly at me. It was quite cool to see. Wish I had realized what would happen, I'd have pulled out my camera before the play.

Brooks Barnard had a very strong leg and could boom his kicks

he lasted what...one game?

Ken Walter had a very weak leg, but could place his kicks

he lasted what...2+ seasons?

from PFT:

Several readers have informed us that the players who appeared on the list, which has since been changed to this, were as follows:
RB Nate Ilaoa; FB Jason Davis; FB/LS Jeremy Cain; WR Jeremy Bloom; WR J.J. Outlaw; WR Michael Gasperson; WR Zac Collie; TE Lee Vickers; T Jonathan Palmer; C Jasper Harvey; G Jacob Hobbs; T Pat McCoy; DE Marques Murrell; DT Mauricio Lopez; DT Ian Scott; LB Akeem Jordan; LB Dedrick Roper; CB Dustin Fox; CB Nick Graham; S Marcus Paschal; S Erick Harris; and P Dirk Johnson.

Dirk Johnson looks to be available. I wouldn't be mad about having Dirk Johnson. But we shall see

As far as the Australian boomer guy, Roca, the fullbacks in Rugby and Aussie Rules (i.e. the equivalent of US football punters) are typically very good at situational kicks. You gain ground in these sports by kicking toward the sideline either directly when you're backed up, or when you're closer to midfield it has to bounce first in the field of play before going out of bounce. Also, if you kick the ball into/through the end zone, it's the other team's ball at the 22 yard line, so the guys like Roca will try to get the ball as close to the end zone as possible.

I wouldn't be surprised if BB calls Miller back in light of why we cut our punter.

Not sure I'd capitalize the VERY in very good...

Neither would I.

After careful consideration, I would choose Scott Player over the lot of them, though Hansen has done nothing to lose his job already.

As an australian, I take offence to you guys comparing Rugby and Aussie Rules!!!

They are 2 completely different sports. lol....

I don't understand why the patrios, or more NFL teams for that matter, look at more Rugby or AFL (Aussie rules) players....

In AFL, the whole principle of the game is accuracy in kicking. It is a 100m big oval and some players can kick in 60 meters and withing a 5 square meter zone. The rest of the players can kick it 50.

The only issue is the transition to wearing pads. But an Australian football player would be a great project.

The other issue is money, it is very likely that a punter earns more than most of hte top tier of AFL or rugby players.
