Why so worked up? I disagree with Guttierez to the PS. The Patriots do their best to avoid putting players on the PS that are likely to get poached. And by all accounts, it looks like Guttierez would get scooped up almost immediately. We'll see what happens.

By what accounts will Guttierez be scooped up immediately? I really don't get why so many people here are saying this. What has he done that makes him such a hot commodity?

Ever seen Gibran Hamdan play? How about Brian St. Pierre? Lang Campbell? I don't know what you're expecting to see from Gutierrez; we're only talking about whether other NFL teams would desire him as a third QB.

Agree that there is no need for 4 QB's.

My guess right now would vary from Reiss'

No Vinatieri - waste of a spot, no one else will sign him, he won't go anywhere else.
No Gutierrez - there will be a dozen similar QB's on the wire tomorrow, and adding an undrafted rookie QB with no understanding of your system to a final roster really makes little sense for the other 31 teams

(I don't think Pukey Hilliard ends on the practice squad - why keep three OL on PS when the team has so many young OL already)

I would keep Rashard Moore as a big back-up NT.
I would keep Dante Wesley over Mel Mitchell. Both offer ST capabilities, and on defense, Wesley looks better at corner than Mitchell looks at safety, and corner is thinner.

Note that Reiss sort of cheats with 54, rather than 53, enabling the fourth QB. That's a neat trick, by the way, because the Pats can keep an extra spot while they watch the releases (maybe a third TE upgrade?) and then activate Samuel after other teams are full, releasing someone they can then put on PS.

Color me confused....Vinatieri??? What does he have to do with anything?

This is ENTIRELY a different situation. This team isn't rebuilting...it BUILT. Think about it. Brady has go another 6 years as the starter, minimum. So NEITHER Cassell OR Guiterrez are likely Brady's replacement. These guys are back ups ONLY, Plus future trade bait.

This team has too may NFL ready players and not enough roster spots for 3 QBs let alone 4

BOTTOM LINE - Vinnie goes on speed dial and Guttierez goes to the PS. END OF STORY. Mike gets a lot things right, but THIS on is WRONG!

Mike didn't say it, but I think the reasoning would be that you might be able to trade Gutz for something someday. Is that possible trade chip worth cutting someone else? Not sure, but that's the math you have to do.

Samuel's exemption expires on Saturday (don't recall the source).

Actually, according to Reiss, it expires on the Monday after the 1st game.

I see no need to carry Vinny nor Gutierrez. Vinny can shadow no problem throughout the year and I can't see a problem running Gut thru waivers and onto the PS.

If K Brady is hurting then I could see keeping Rivers. Otherwise, he's not that good a player that he'll be at risk of being scooped up by another team once 700 or so players hit the waiver wire. Even if he were ther are many other Rivers' out there. If Brady is soon to be healthy I'd much rather keep Mills over Rivers.

The rest of the list looks fine to me though I'd probably keep Wesley over Mitchell and I might like to see S Thomas somewhere on the roster.

You must have watched a different player than I did because Rivers showed good hands and very good blocking and he'd be an excellent #3 behind Brady and Watson.

This team uses enough 3 TE sets that keeping Rivers is almost a certainty. Especially with the likelihood of Dave Thomas going on Reserve/PUP list.

I agree with DB that Rivers has looked good enough to make the roster.

With regard to the QB situation, I was under the impression that NE decided it was a mistake to only have 2 QBs on the active roster. It just seemed to me that they want more QBs around to lessen Brady's workload a little.

I disagree with 2 of your points......and agree with Reiss...that Gutz will not clear waivers......despite hearing that he has had a horrible training camp via patsox23, Gutierrez has shown great poise already........he would be snatched up IMMEDIATELY........Secondly...there is no way Rivers sits out either if we cut him......He has also shown some great stuff and will be snatched up right away.......one man's opinion

Cassel is gone soon -- maybe we turn this into a draft pick factory like Green Bay did with the guys who were behind Favre.

I think Testaverde gets cut with a wink and a nod.

EDIT: I also think Wesley might be a surprise over Mel Mitchell and CJ Jones over another spot.

I agree with you here.....Wesley impressed last night and seems to have had a great preseason.........I also liked what I saw from CJ Jones......we are so freakin loaded at WR however and I see Bam or Kight hanging around (PS) before CJ.....I would think,,.,

My wife confuses Vinny Testaverde with Adam Vinatieri ALL THE TIME. I guess she's not the only one...

Exactly. Rivers has looked good since preseason game 1 (and, IIRC, he was signed one day before that game). Not only has he not had any drop-off, I think he's actually looked a bit better each game. I would be extremely disappointed to see him cut.

As BB would say I'm not ready to put him in Canton yet, but I like what I've seen from Gutierrez during the pre-season, and I'd hate to see us keep Vinnie over him and risk losing Gutierrez. He needs development, but I like the way he plays-his pocket presence and his throws - more than Cassell. I believe that he'll make the roster.

I also like the way Wesley has played on special teams. I can't say who I'd keep him over, but he looks like he can contribute.

If the Patriots carry four QBs I will personally go to Foxboro and ***** slap Belichick.

Reiss did his projection to 54 using Asante’s exemption; I expect Asante to be activated for the Jets game and Blue to get the start, those two will split reps to tune Asante up for the Chargers. The challenge here is to project return dates for Seymour and David Thomas. Do they make the roster the way Kaczur did last year? Reiss already has Sey on his list, but keeping Thomas on PUP is too simple a solution at this point. Using Reiss’ projection - with my thoughts on how to make room for Asante and Thomas:

QB (4)
Vinny Testaverde - cut in favor of activating Asante.
Matt Gutierrez - option one to keep Thomas active.

RB (4) - no change

WR (6)
Kelley Washington - trade rumors make this option three for Thomas.

TE (3) - no change
OL (9) - no change
DL (7) - no change
ILB (5) - no change
OLB (4) - no change
CB (4) - no change

S (5)
Mel Mitchell - option two to keep Thomas.

Specialists (3) - no change.

Projected Practice Squad: (8)
JOAT Bam Childress
WR Kelvin Kight - STs yoyo
DL Santonio Thomas - second cut to bring in a new body, but depth until Sey is back.
FB Garret Mills - I don't think they give up yet, but he's the third cut to make room for another player.
OL Clint Oldenburg
OL Mike Elgin
DB Waju Anam - first cut to bring in a new body or Gutierrez.
LB Cory Mays - STs yoyo

Regarding the strength/weakness question from earlier in the week - no question it's at CB - I expect the Pats to be working the street CB market hard. They do have Gemara Williams on the Shadow Roster once he heals up, I would expect to see him on the Practice Squad at some point.

Gemara is AWFUL. He was toasted all camp per Mrs B. BB has to find someone with more capability and upside.

Boy, you guys LOOOOOOOVE Gutierrez. I think he's fine. I think it's certainly arguable that another team could put a claim in on him - and that the cuts should really look at that possibility with a good deal of deliberation. HOWEVER...

"snatched up IMMEDIATELY?" REALLY? Seriously? I'm just not seeing it.

I'm right there with you. The guy completes a few passes against some 3rd stringers and all of a sudden he's a hot QB prospect that teams are going to be waiting to snatch up. Sorry I just don't buy it. And even if another were to grab him for some reason, I wouldn't really care.

Going to have to agree. I'd like to see him on the PS, but I don't see him making the team.
