4 QBs is just plain unnecessary.

Unless they really see something in the youngest guy, like they did when they carried Brady as the 4th QB in 2000.

Samuel's exemption expires on Saturday (don't recall the source).

Absosmurfly no way there are 4 QBs on this roster. If the team decides to keep Guts, they will waive Vinny.

When they did that, they didn't even carry 53 players. It won't happen.

Mike Reiss said:
with Vinny Testaverde remaining on speed dial in case of an emergency.

Would "the chance to get Vinnie a 21st consecutive season with a touchdown count as an "emergency"? :)

I see no need to carry Vinny nor Gutierrez. Vinny can shadow no problem throughout the year and I can't see a problem running Gut thru waivers and onto the PS.

If K Brady is hurting then I could see keeping Rivers. Otherwise, he's not that good a player that he'll be at risk of being scooped up by another team once 700 or so players hit the waiver wire. Even if he were ther are many other Rivers' out there. If Brady is soon to be healthy I'd much rather keep Mills over Rivers.

The rest of the list looks fine to me though I'd probably keep Wesley over Mitchell and I might like to see S Thomas somewhere on the roster.

I read somewhere else it was a 2 week option. Teams don't always utilize it because they decide to play the player. But Seattle got a 3 week exemption for Deion last year I believe.

I really hate to see them risk losing Gutierrez to one of the surprising number of teams who don't have a legit #2 let alone a worthwhile developmental #3. We haven't had a developmental QB stick even on the PS here in too long. And while Vinny eventually moved the ball last night, that was against a 3rd string D. When Gutierrez does that I'm impressed. That Vinny can still manage that doesn't impress me. Cassel is the #2. Vinny is what he is - the dire emergency #3 QB and all around great guy who must have compromising pictures of Bill stashed away... Gutierrez could learn and develop in that slot, all Vinny can do is occupy it. Seems like a waste when Vinny would only be a long distance phone call away.

Cassel is gone soon -- maybe we turn this into a draft pick factory like Green Bay did with the guys who were behind Favre.

I think Testaverde gets cut with a wink and a nod.

EDIT: I also think Wesley might be a surprise over Mel Mitchell and CJ Jones over another spot.

No Dante Wesley in this prediction either, I guess Reiss doesn't feel that he moved up too much. I would actually replace Mitchell with Wesley.

I can see the Pats carrying 4 TEs, before they carry 4 QBs.

This is incorrect. I believe it comes from speculation by Reiss. He has since corrected himself. It expires AFTER the first game. (I believe it will expire earlier if the Patriots activate Asante earlier.)

I bet the Pats keep the roster exemption until after game 1 by keeping Asante inactive. Gay is ready, so unless they think Asante can step right in and play better, it makes sense to keep the roster exemption and give Asante more time to get ready.

I can't believe I am saying this, but I agree with Reiss about the 4 QBs. I'll bet dollars to cents that BB puts Vinny in week 1 vs the Jets for his obligatory TD pass and against his former team no less! Then, when the roster exemption runs out for Asante, it is bye bye Vinny... we'll keep you on speed dial buddy.

Where this leaves Wesley, who I feel deserves to make the team, I do not know. If Mitchell is deemed better, I guess he will be yet another tough cut.

Khayos, Cassel is NOT gone, either sooner or later.

This is ENTIRELY a different situation. This team isn't rebuilting...it BUILT. Think about it. Brady has go another 6 years as the starter, minimum. So NEITHER Cassell OR Guiterrez are likely Brady's replacement. These guys are back ups ONLY, Plus future trade bait.

This team has too may NFL ready players and not enough roster spots for 3 QBs let alone 4

BOTTOM LINE - Vinnie goes on speed dial and Guttierez goes to the PS. END OF STORY. Mike gets a lot things right, but THIS on is WRONG!

Quick hit: Reche Caldwell is added to the mix. The fact he didn't play Thursday night leads one to believe he'll be on the roster

... or that a trade is in the works...

though I'd prefer to have major depth at this position this year.

I say leave Vinnie off - I think he's gotten his pay as a salary bonus already and I think he'd be loyal to BB

Then again, if another team suffers injuries at QB and Vinnie has a chance to start, that's going to be tough to pass up - but for now, I think we need the roster spot for another position.

i agree with the 6 WR but i do not think too we will carry 4 qb...

uhh, contractually his last year is 2008. Who knows what the market will be for his services at that time. Unless you're speculating that we'll re-sign him, which is just as valid as my speculation that we'll trade him if we have another potential prospect..

Ah, okay, thanks.

Why so worked up? I disagree with Guttierez to the PS. The Patriots do their best to avoid putting players on the PS that are likely to get poached. And by all accounts, it looks like Guttierez would get scooped up almost immediately. We'll see what happens.
