Giant Thoughts

In slow mo that was quite a blow he took to his lower leg and at first glance it looked like a traumatic fracture. Wouldn't be surprised if the bone was cracked, or the achilles strained, or just the blunt force trauma of a leg whip leaves him hobbled for some time.

Jesus H. Christ, why don't you rain on my parade MORE? Please stop scaring me. Everyone else is saying he ran off okay. Let's stick with that storyline so I can sleep tonight, okay? ;)

Patsox--

If it makes you feel better, the odds that he had a broken bone and got up and ran/trotted off the field under his own power are very, very low. :)

I didn't see the play, but I'm going to assume he's going to be OK.

I was watching the game and saw his leg fall off. He hopped to the sidelines and waved the detached leg at the fans. :D

Meriweather update
By Mike Reiss, Globe Staff
What happened on the fourth-quarter play in which it looked like you were injured near the goal-line?
"Nothing really. I ran into the pile and fell down and the ref thought I was hurt. But I was trying to tell them 'no' and they waved me off anyway. It wasn't that serious."

It looked like you were in some pain on the sideline.
"No, I was more mad than anything else. I wasn't in that much pain."

From not making the play?
"Yeah."

What are your thoughts on playing safety tonight?
"It felt good being back there, able to see everything, roam, and play how I played in college."

It looked natural. Did it feel a lot different than your experience at corner?
"Yeah, of course. Me being that I never played corner except for a couple games in college. I came here and got put at corner, it was kind of a mind shocker. At safety, it's a spot I have fun at playing. Therefore, it was kind of fun being back there."

Were you thinking like a corner or a safety?
"I was at corner thinking like a safety, so it's not the fact of how you're thinking, but how well you're prepared for the game."

I think Merriweather will be ok. If he was really injured he would have disappeared from that locker room before any reporters were allowed access.
Players disappear on this team when they are hurt.

Patsox I think that you can sleep peacefully tonight.

LOL, thanks. I do think - and I'm not panicked about this at all - that there's a bit of "methinks thou doth protest too much" in his, "Naw, I wasn't hurt, that was all the ref! And I was just mad about the play!" But it does seem like he's okay. And I agree with the notion that he would've been out of sight had he been even close to seriously hurt.

LOL. Well played, 'mazin.

Agree. It does smack a bit of "I've got a wide stance".

LOL. What the heck is happening back there? I moved away and the US falls apart with scandal. Coincidence? You decide.

Yep I am pretty sure Marcellus has a roster spot in the palm of his hands.

Will Dante Wesley make the team? I understand he faced a bunch of scrubs tonight but he impressed me none the less.

I wish Bam could make the team but it isn't likely. CJ Jones looked good tonight but again someone who isn't making the roster. Bam as a running back is cool.

Eric Alexander was very good tonight.

I think C J Jones created a roster spot for himself tonight, I was very impressed with his play......reminded me of a young Troy Brown

Is it odd that Meriweather spoke to the press after the game, particularly about an injury?? Don't we have rules about rookies talking to the press and about talking about injuries??

Looking at the stats, Woods seemed to be on fire. 2 sacks. 2 forced fumbles. I didn't get to watch the game so I don't know the exact plays they happened on.

I don't recall the forced fumbles, he made a real nice power move on one of the sacks. I think the other one he got credit for a surge created by the DL (Smith / Thomas). Woods looked pretty good, like most young players he needs to work on setting the edge, he needs to shore up his tackling.

***THIS IS A JOKE PLEASE DON'T TAKE SERIOUSLY***

Coach BB has released the injury report for week 1 and he reports that Brandon Meriweather is probable (50% chance of playing) with a detached leg.

Actually was able to watch most of the game, with the exception of NE's first TD drive.
Too bad the first drive was the best football ever, amazing, they will never play that again.... just kidding. Cassell made some nice throws but there was also a lot of offsides and other penalties.
* Someone explain to me how Bam Childress is *not* an NFL player. I realize that he is in a numbers crunch, but I have to think that he is better than 10-20 WRs that were on rosters last year.
Lets wish him luck, he may be on a roster but not ours
* CJ Jones was kicking ass as a return man. Quick acceleration, strong runner.
Jones has a nice burst, he seemed like the fastest player on the field. Could be a nice PS candidate. I think Hobbs will be our main kick returner, Welker/Faulk for punts
* While I missed one drive, Cassell looked pretty good. He seemed to carry himself very well on the field. Even with NY starters in there, he made quick decisions and keeps his head up despite the rush. I hipe he is never needed, but I am more optimistic about him than I was before.
It was his best preseason performance

* Lua my boy. See you next year. Despite all the pub, I don't think you were ready yet anyway.
Hello IR, hello weight room

* Alexander looked like a man amongst boys out there. He was in on virtually every play.
Alexander played well, he was all over the field
* LeKevin continues to look like a solid backup at DE. I kinda wished he looked like a solid backup at NT, but whatever.
Thomas as played a pretty good game, I thought Moore took a step back. Unless Seymour is out for a while Moore is a goner.

* Woods made a few plays, but I expected more. Everything I heard made it seem as if he was ready to take a big step forward, but I have yet to see it.

* Of course the only defender of real consequence gets hurt with a frickin minute left in the game. I wouldn't worry too much about Meriweather if it weren't for Wilson's injury. If both of these guys have longer term issues, the FS position is now manned by the triumverate of Sanders/Gay/Andrews.
It was a learning lesson for Gay and Merriweather, Shockey schooled them both. Merriweather can hit but needs to improve his coverage. Gay is still learning as a 4th or 5th option at FS he is ok.
* Despite his injury, Meriweather played a good game. I would like to see him disrupting more plays, but he is definitely willing to mix it up.

* I suppose that it could have been the fact that he was playing with backups at WR and on the OL, but I came away unimpressed with Vinny. Yes, yes, I know he is just the emergency QB, but shouldn't a guy like him look like a worldbeater going against future car wash employees?

* Goodbye Mills. Hello Rivers.
I was watching Mills closely. I like that they put him in space (short flares out of the backfield) and while he doesn't destroy people in short yardage he was showing a good feel for opening up running lanes for Evans (see 3rd and short early in the game plus goaline situation). I think he even got a handoff at one point. This is going to be closer than it looks, IMO he was getting a lot of reps and they want him to stick.
* I wouldn't be surprised to see Kight go on IR just to keep him around another year.

As always, I am sure that I forgot something. I welcome your thoughts.

Wesley versus Mitchell - if it comes down to it I guess I would go with Wesley, at least I have seen him near the action. I swear I haven't seen Mitchell make a play yet.

Kickoffs - Ghost was booming them, he had a at least 2-3 touchbacks that were at the very edge of the back endzone line. Nice FG he made too. Terrible camera angle on the blocked kick. Hard to tell what was happening there.

Punter of the Day - Seemed ok, they all seem ok.

Patriots Today - They interviewed the host of Patriots Today, she is easy on the eyes. It is some kind of internet show (it may also be on demand) but because the Patriots website sucks I can't find much about it (in 1902 they invented this thing can Search, try it!)

Nice job, I am sure I am forgetting something as well, I was flipping in between the two college games and the Red Sox replay (can we get a freakin hitter please? just pathetic batting this series)

I think Merriweather did really good. Except one blown coverage on the first drive the eventually let to the TD. He was being very physical which I love to see.

Childress will make the team after last night. That game was his tryout and he passed with flying colors.

I also think that last night showed how much depth our team actually has and if you want to bring up they were playing 2nd, 3rd, and practice squad atleast the players have built confidence.

Obviously, I approve of touchbacks. :rocker:

Seriously, though, is it just me, or are his kickoffs now traveling the same distance--but taking longer to get there?

I thought Merriweather looked pretty good, but he also looked like a rookie at times, especially on the first Giants drive. It doesn't seem fair to criticize him too much since it was all the Pats scrubs out there, but it was Shockey who was doing the most damage on that drive. Usually safeties are responsible for covering TEs, and although it's hard to tell if those catches were all Merriweather's responsibility at least that slant looked like it was. Anyway, hard to knock a rookie for failing to cover a pro-bowl TE, but he'll need to learn from that experience.

Actually, Willie Andrews was the safety who impressed me the most. Overall he looked like he was always in the right place. The play that I liked the most was the Giants 3rd and goal on the first drive when he set the edge against a MUCH bigger blocker and turned the play inside where the help finished it off. Our OLBs could learn a thing or two from Andrews on that one...

I watched Mills. As others had observed in previous games he most always seems to make his block. Blocks downfield well. He gets cut, but he has ability.
