After watching "Hard Knocks" ...

...I’m convinced that Herm Edwards is stealing money. Has anyone else been watching this show? Did you see where he put up on the screen how the team had lost two games by a total of five points, like that’s some sort of accomplishment? Then the team goes and gets blown out. I wonder if he will put up another sign reading “we have lost three games by a total of 35 points.”

BTW – why is it that every time a player screws up, he says “that’s okay, don’t worry?” How about teaching them to correct the mistake instead of telling them everything will turn out just fine.

Damn, do I miss having that guy in the AFC East. I pine for the days when the other coaches in the AFC East were Herm, Dave Wannstedt, and Wade Phillips (I'm pretty sure they were all coaching at the same time for at least 1 year).

Even better than Phillips, it was Gregg {damnit I can see his face, but his last name excapes me. He is now the DC of the Skins} who was a terrible HC.

Yeah, that was a beautiful thing. Herm edwards’ clock management skills were almost as good as keanue reeves’ acting skills.

I still think the most classic moment of the show is when they say:

"While the players take their long journey to the training camp facilities, Edwards is hard at work preparing for their arrival." (or something like that)

And the show Herm coloring in a sign that says welcome to training camp. The kicker is that he stood in front of the bus with the sign. It was also funny that he gave the sign to Ty Law to carry around and Law just throws it on the ground.

I now know why Jets players were so upset that they didn't have him to run training camp and hated Mangini's. I think my high school double sessions were more grueling and the coaches were tougher than what is going on in Jets' camp.

I live near KC (lawrence) so you might guess that there are a ton of Chiefs fans around here. It is funny to hear him on the radio because he just doesnt seem to get it. Sports radio here gets on him about what he says and does all the time.
Case in point: He had a press conference telling the media that Huard would be the starter for week 1, then on his weekly radio interview, they asked him how the team took it when he told them that Huard would be starting. He said he didn't tell them, he just had them line up for practice with Huard at the 1 position and expected them to play because it really is not a big deal. The talk show host tried to ask him why he felt it was necessary to have a press conference about it but not tell the team and Herms answer was that he was tired of the question coming up in the press conferences. The hosts were obviously confused by the answer but let it sit at that. Just classic.

Ah the Greg Williams era was another classic. I'm interested to see how Wade Phillips does in Dallas, he was seriously overmatched in Buffalo.

He says, “the game is over because there is a 10 second run-off, but I’ll give you another chance.” Then, the QB throws a pass that is deflected to the other side of the field and a receiver ends up catching it. It was the flukiest play, but herm is smiling and giving the touchdown sign like the team just executed perfectly. Pure comedy gold.

I truly believe the Oakland Raiders will be at least 3 games better than the Chiefs when it is all said and done

KC probably gets 3 or 4 wins this year and loses all but maybe 1 game to Western foes with a win at home against the Raiders but thats it.

Actually, I don't think Herm looked quite that bad. When he showed the point total for the two lost games--five points--he was making the point that the team beat itself, which makes some sense.

Also, when he says to a player who screws up, "That's all right, you'll do it better next time," he may be talking to a player whose confidence is already fragile, who needs encouragement--rather than to a lazy star.

That said, the atmosphere at KC, as seen on "Hard Knocks" is very laid back and relaxed. There's a little competition for roster spots, but not much. There seems to be no urgency and not much of a plan. Edwards is obviously a nice guy, but he's not going to push any 53-man roster to exceed itself.

And the personnel guy who tells a player he's been released is not exactly warm and fuzzy. He believes in the brutal truth and delivers it. To me, it sounded like, "You f**ked up, get out. Now."

Of course, the chances of BB ever letting a TV crew film weeks of training camp are about the same as George Bush winning a third term. Nevertheless, watching the series gives you a few interesting insights into an NFL training camp.

I noticed that the player personnel guy (forgot his name) makes the cuts. Is that the usual practice? I remember when the ravens where on the show a few years back and billick made the cuts himself. You'd think that either edwards or peterson would make the cuts.

Ya my jaw dropped when I saw that, I coudn't tell which league they were preparing to play in....NFL or Peewee?

His inability to be a coach shows up everywhere - He couldn't even handle the Jason Dunn room situation without coming off as if he had no control over the team. He gets all defensive and basically runs away from Dunn. I mean I know he has a laid back coaching style, but its another thing to have them run all over you.

Watching this show has been the highlight of the preseason. Edwards comes off as a complete clown.

I'm really bummed that I missed Ty Law dropping the sign on the ground, but another moment that stands out is when he's talking with the special teams coach about their rookie kicker (who missed 3 FGs in a preseason game).

The ST coach is going on and on about how the kicker's coming along, he just needs more time, that he's more than capable of getting the job done. Edwards is just nodding his head like a jack-in-the-box, saying "he's our guy!" over and over.

Then there's a great moment where the ST coach goes, "so, you're not bringing in any other kickers, right? I mean, you're not trying to replace him, right?" There's an awkward pause, and Edwards nods again and goes "he's our guy!". You get the distinct impression that the ST coach doesn't believe a word he's saying...

I love this show!

I watch these shows to get a better inside look at how HC's and other make decision and what they base it on.. unfortunately, this did nothing for me and made me believe that KC is gonna be sucky again.

I too was hoping to get some insight into the inner workings of a high powered professional organization....but Herm looked like the clueless head master at Summer camp with a "Kick Me" sign on his back and toilet paper stuck to his shoe. Unbelievable!!!

Imagine someone whining about their room assignment to BB or Shanahan for that matter. They'd tell him to "Go piss up a rope and don't waste my time with this minutia."

The inmates are running the asylum there, my friends. I got the impression Hermie was a little intimidated by the players.

Didn't BB tell Matt Light "Shut the hell up...you're a rookie...you don't know ****"
