Peter King's Top 500

Just noticed that he considers Asante the third-best CB in the league, behind Champ and Winfield.

This kind of stuff reminds me we have a 3-time champion QB bound for the Hall.....who has an enormous chip on his shoulder :)

Go get 'em Tommy!

An exercise in futility.

An ambitious undertaking to be sure.

I was pleased to see 5 Pats in the top 40.

And while I didn't get through the whole list, it was nice to see basically the whole pats roster represented.

I agree. You gotta think after the first 75-100, King was just throwing players in whatever spot looked good.

I'm a huge Reggie Bush fan, but I can't believe he is ranked at No. 19, way ahead of players like Stephen Jackson, Larry Johnson and Shaun Alexander. Bush should be that high someday, and possibly in the Top 5, just not now.

I agree with the top of his rankings. Can't say I am upset about Peyton being chosen No. 1 and Brady No. 2, I figured most people are going to rank it this way this year. Peyton is the hot QB at this moment, just the way Brady was years earlier. This can, and hopefully will, change this year.

On November 4th a lot of journalists will be changing their tune :)

Yeah, I have to agree on this being an exercise in futility. It's so subjective and there are just so many players.

I imagine this took forever. If it didn't then it isn't at all valid. And if did then it isn't at all worth it.

I was ready to give King credit for undertaking this, but I've decided it was simply a dumb idea to begin with. You don't get credit for for taking on a gigantic misguided project.

And while the ranking of Reggie Bush is silly, Vince Young around 50 is downright stupid. Wasn't he the worst QB in the league last year?

Exactly. If you asked him now who is better Cullen Jenkins or Clark Haggans, you think he'd remember which he had 200 places above the other?

Wait what was that Tony Ugoh, who hasn't even taken a snap in a regular game is 4 spots ahead of Ellis Hobbs at 487 - go figure?

Ty Warren

Ty Warren start to be recognized like it should be

I'm sure as fans of our respective teams that we could all sit here and argue position of certain players all day. As a Pats fan, I would argue with Wilfork's position or maybe some guys ahead of Hobbs.

For example, Mathis ahead of Wilfork? I'm not so sure of that one. And someone else brought it up, but Ugoh and David Harris, two rookies, ahead of Hobbs. The former have yet to play a down in the NFL, and the latter played decently in the regular season and very well in the post season while recovering from a wrist injury.

Also, not that I'm complaining, but it may be a step far to call Colvin one of the best free agent signings. I think he's great for the Pats, but unless I'm missing some sarcasm there, it might be stretching it a tad.

If Adalius is really better than Seymour, we are going to have one HELL of a season! :)

This is People Magazine b.s. It's like comparing Grace Slick, Beverly Sill, Dolly Parton, Aretha Franklin, Michael Jackson, etc. as top female vocalists. If King rated by position, he'd have a lot more cred.

I like these kinds of lists - no one could possibly agree on every player so it's fun kick around some names and think of what certain players can do.

That said, Kerry Rhodes at number 29 is way overdone. I really like Rhodes, he's dynamic, involved, and makes plays that matter, but he's not better than Stephen Jackson and Larry Johnson, among others. I could see putting him in the top 50-60, even that would be a real distinction, but 29 is buying the hype.

Journalists change their tunes like I change my socks. They'll say anything to fill air time.
