Why cut Lua when Thomas could replace Rivers (a TE)?

Thonas isn't ready to play yet. My guess is that he won't ready for at least a couple of weeks. Thomas is a longshot. So I would keep both.

If Thomas doesn't come back, there are others in my book considerably ahead of Lua, who might not even make the Practice Squad. Caldwell is th obvious addition.

I add Lua and Thomas and cut Vinny T while putting him on wink-wink speed-dial.

While I see what your saying, from the Pats perspective, if Thomas weren't ready now or in the near future why not continue with the PUP until the 6th week? I am saying that if he weren't ready now, don't you think the Pats would have PUPed him like the 3 others today and made sure that he was really healed. Rivers has shown that he is at least adequate until Thomas' return. He must be closer than we all think.

I say Tory James stays...need depth at CB.

There isn't any room. You have Samuel, Hobbs, Meriweather, Gay, Sanders, Harrison, and Wilson. That's 7 DBs. Add in 2-3 special teamers -- Mitchell, Andrews, Wesley, and you're filled out.

I like your work as usual, but here is where I differ.

One Caldwell DEFINITELY makes this team. Barring a trade, I think the Pats keep 6 WRs. You are also a DB short. I have said on many occassions, with so many guys who can play in this league already, they are NOT going to waste a roster position on a 3rd QB. So Vinny goes on speed dial, and Rogers goes to the practise squad. With those 2 spots you add Caldwell to the WRs, and James to the secondary.

With Lua AND Rogers both on the PS, you can go into this season on short of the ideal number of LBs Also because so many of the guys can play both inside AND outside, it adds to the depth.

Why would you take Caldwell instead of Gaffney? I don't want to revisit that thread but it seems team wise Caldwell would have to beat out Washington and Gaffney is probably the #2 receiver at least until Moss gets uncranked.

if they were going to cut him why would they have brought him in now?

I almost never disagree with anything you say, but I think what is going on here is that BB realized how much he was missing on the scout team by not having a 3rd QB. I recall him saying that Cassel could not handle both 2nd string duties as well as scout team duties last year. When Testeverde came back late last year, BB made many statements of how much value Testeverde brought to the Defense by handling the scout team. It could be that BB wants this luxury all year round. That is the only explanantion I have for them signing Vinny so early, otherwise I figured it would have been a wink wink replica like last year where they only brought him in after the roster thinned out with IR's.

You say that we need a #2 until Moss gets uncranked. Is gaffney physically ready for that role?

As a practical matter, I expect Gaffney and Caldwell to both make the team.

That's a very perceptive comment. Vinny would be great at mimmicking many QBs due to his experience. Vince Young might be a stretch but...
