Re: Pats get to 75: Richardson to IR; Jackson, Jackson, Brown to R/PUP, Samuel exempt

It's gonna be a tough day on Saturday, I was looking at depth chart and it's a good possibility that more than one of the young players I was hoping to see play this year will not suit up for us: Rogers, Lua, Mills and Andrews. (I say three of the four will either be cut or will encounter some mysterious injury that will keep them out the entire year.)

Yes, amazig how the in injury bug can strike players that are on the bubble this time of year.

Not surprised by the moves...my thinking is 2 of the 3 have been on PUP for some time. Probably Eddie and Chad Jackson...I've speculated at that with the roster numbers 2 over and it makes sense. Richardson to IR was more or less expected. He stays with the team and will be solid next year. Also what this does is give the coaches the game to see all the active players...as much as possible. Very nifty. I was surprised by the Samuel exemption and I think they moved Patrick to be sure...just in case.

Just wondering...Shane Stant isn't employed by the Pats as one who does "odd jobs" is he...????? His expertise is the Harding method of qualifying for IR...

Bummer on Richardson in the sense that he's looked pretty good so far. I like that they keep him though. He should be well served with a paycheck, and lots and lots of schooling.

No, they needed to cut Patrick too. They have 74 active right now, plus the two active/PUPs give 76, minus Samuel gives 75.

Well looks like we may end up with Randy, Donte, Wes, Jabar, Reche and Kelly on the opening day roster, however I still have a feeling one of the last two will be cut.

Andrews is not on the bubble in the least. He is an excellent gunner and BB has spoken very highly of him lately. Not sure why his name keeps coming up with the others.

What do the players on the PUP and IR list get paid in relation to their contract? A certain percentage? An amount specified in their contract?

Full pay as long as they are on the list(s). Also count against the cap

No. At least, not necessarily so, and in this case there's no way to know for certain unless it's reported somewhere. It depends on the contract.

Unless the newest CBA has ended the practice (which I have not heard anything about) there is such a thing as a "split contract", which stipulates a lower pay rate, typically half, if the player goes on IR. (Maybe PUP, too, don't know.) That lower pay rate gets reflected in the salary cap charge, too. It all depends on the individual contract's negotiated terms, and a low round pick will have little leverage in this respect when bargaining.

I agree, he will benefit by being around these guys and these coaches.. he might catch on next year..

FWIW - I have presumed that the Patriots have included the split salary concept in all of their deals with Day 2 picks.

With regards to Richardson, putting him on IR likely wasn't just a way of protecting his rights. I forgot where I read it but after the Carolina game he had his hand in a small cast and his arm in a sling.

Re: Pats get to 75: Richardson to IR; Jackson, Jackson, Brown to R/PUP, Samuel exempt

While Richardson may indeed be injured, in truth if he wasn't injured he probably wasn't going to make the team. Therefore...him being injured is very good for the Patriots. You guys have to remember, this is a SuperBowl caliber team. There are very few rookies making this team. If we can protect a few till next year, it works out great for the long term.

It was more the timing...not the number...when they announced, Samuel was back, they also announced the cut of Patrick..sort of a one for one situation. IF they knew they were going to get an exemption for Samuel, the cut did not have to come then...that was my only point...timing. They did have to make 5 moves, not 6...as they had the AS exemption.

He wasn't going to make the team? He was playing with the first team defense on Friday. I think they liked him.

This is all as expected. It is actually good to see Richardson stashed away until next year.

It is also good to see us still considering Thomas for the active roster.

1) ANDREWS: You are 100% correct - Andrews not only makes this team, but is moving up quickly on the depth chart. Watch for him in dime packages this year. Note BB comments about him, he spoke somewhat glowingly of his effort and leap from last year to this year.

2) MILLS: Strange situation here, he is going to be cut, I am certain of it, he will be that very rare player that will basically be cut because he will be out positioned, yet here is a guy that really doesn't even have a position, but he is out positioned at all of them (TE, FB, ST).

3) LUA: I think he makes the team, team comments have been favorable and his increased playing time from game to game is a very good indication.

4) ROGERS: See #3.

Reiss certainly agrees with you on all counts. I still can't see Lua. I have Caldwell instead.

Right, and they did - 3 to R/PUP, 1 to IR, and Patrick cut. ;)

Re: Pats make 5 moves to get to 75

Glad to see that Sey or Thomas were not placed on Reserve/PUP.

Thomas is hurt? Oh. Could you say Dave next time? These minor heart attacks add up you know.

I think Willie is a cool player/story, he is so small but he can play a decent physical saftey. he is versatile CB, ST, both Safety, even a little wide out.

under dog story for his draft status and size....go willie

Re: Pats get to 75: Richardson to IR; Jackson, Jackson, Brown to R/PUP, Samuel exempt

"He has a hangnail and can't practice for a week ... well, he's such a marginal player that means he'll be too far behind to earn a roster spot even when healthy ... on the IR he goes."

That, I think, is pretty much how the official excuses work.
