Pats moves
By Mike Reiss, Globe Staff

The Patriots have made the following roster moves today:

WR Troy Brown, WR Chad Jackson and CB Eddie Jackson have been moved to reserve/PUP. That means these players can not come off the physically unable to perform list until at least after the sixth week of the season. The Patriots can "start the clock" on any of these players between Week 6 and Week 9 of the regular season and then would have 21 days to decide whether to place the player on the active roster or on injured reserve.

Meanwhile, rookie cornerback Mike Richardson was placed on injured reserve with a hand injury. This means Richardson is lost for the season, but the Patriots retain his rights.

The team has 76 players on the roster. Teams must cut to 75 today but the Patriots have been granted an exemption for Asante Samuel.

Re: Pats make 5 moves to get to 75

Brown, Jackson, Jackson to PUP.

Richardson to IR.

Samuel granted exemption.

How does an exemption work?

Re: Pats make 5 moves to get to 75

Glad to see that Sey or Thomas were not placed on Reserve/PUP.

Samuel granted exemption.

(A) Richardson to IR = :( [but at least no chance he ends up in GanGREEN this year]

(B) Thomas not to PUP = :rocker: :robot:

Glad to see that Sey or Thomas were not placed on Reserve/PUP.

Not yet, but it could still happen.

How does an exemption work?

They're granted by the commissioner usually for 1-2 weeks (although teams may stop them early).

Branch got one after the trade last year. Larry Johnson got a 2-week one after he signed his contract this year but was activated a day or two into it.

That's true, 23 more moves to be made in the next four days.

Breer reports the exemption is valid through Saturday, the cutdown to 53.

Re: Pats get to 75: Richardson to IR; Jackson, Jackson, Brown to R/PUP, Samuel exempt

Kind of sucks for Richardson, would have been good to see the rook get some playing time this year, even if he it meant he had to be placed on reserve/PUP. Is there a limit for the number of players you can have on reserve/PUP?

Re: Pats get to 75: Richardson to IR; Jackson, Jackson, Brown to R/PUP, Samuel exempt

What do the players on the PUP and IR list get paid in relation to their contract? A certain percentage? An amount specified in their contract?

Did Richardson have to agree to going on the IR? or if he personally thought his injury was not season-ending and believed that he could be signed by another interested team could he request or demand that he be released?

REALLY deeply bummed for Richardson, but glad he's protected and not at all surprised by this development. Hopefully this red-shirt year will serve him well and he can make his way toward inevitably becoming the DB David Givens a year from now.

Of the three on reserve/PUP, I think the Jackson Two will eventually wind up on IR, and Troy will come back for the second half of the season to replace the receiver who is struggling the most. Kelly, Reche, I'm looking in your directions.

Richardson lost? Can he not even practice with the team? Harsh, because he could have improved alot with the practice.

IIRC, players on IR can attend meetings, but can't practice or play.

Yeah, it kinda stinks . . . but, on the flip side, it means more time with Captain Caveman* et al.

Would you rather have him practicing for the Jets or in meetings with the Pats?

Those were the only two choices.

Full pay as long as they are on the list(s). Also count against the cap

I guess if I was forced to choose I would say...let's try him in green.

Richardson's situation is the best at this time. He proved he belongs, and that's significant for a first-year, late round draft choice. He has a year to soak up knowledge like a sponge and to truly understand how to become a professional and learn the Pats system, he gets the full amount of his contract, and he can become a workout warrior in preparation for next season. With Samuel back in the fold, it means we've got another CB in the wings for added depth when necessary. This is a win all around.

Well looks like we may end up with Randy, Donte, Wes, Jabar, Reche and Kelly on the opening day roster, however I still have a feeling one of the last two will be cut.

It's gonna be a tough day on Saturday, I was looking at depth chart and it's a good possibility that more than one of the young players I was hoping to see play this year will not suit up for us: Rogers, Lua, Mills and Andrews. (I say three of the four will either be cut or will encounter some mysterious injury that will keep them out the entire year.)

+1. I think this is good for Richardson. He'll have a strong shot to make the team next year. This move shows BB has a lot of faith in him not to leave him hanging on the practice squad.
