Bears coach Lovie Smith got mad yesterday when reporters asked him if alcohol was involved in the crash.

"How did we get to that?" Smith asked. "We have a one-car accident, and now alcohol is involved? I think that's stretching it a little bit."

It's still not known, and may never be, whether alcohol was involved in the crash, but it's ridiculous for Smith to act as though the question isn't reasonable. If Smith thinks defending his players when they screw up is part of his job, fine. But don't get mad at reporters for doing their job.

From PFT.

Okay, Lovie, the guy smashes a car that costs as much as three kids' college educations into a telephone pole at 3am and then flees the scene, leaving it behind, and you think suggesting alcohol was a factor is "stretching it"?

Nobody is that stupid. I understand saying "no comment," and I recognize you don't want to lose the guy for any time, especially with San Diego in the first game of the season, but how do you hold a straight face and say that?

"What, he was found wrapped in barbed wire, covered in egg yolk, with chicken feathers all over his body? I think it's stretching it to suggest he robbed an egg farm."

In the real world you need proof and or evidence to make accusations or claims. Since the police did not find any alcohol , and Lance will not be charged with any crime, it is a moot point to bring it up. What do you expect Lovey to say? Yea, Lance was prolly drunk as hell, he got away with a big one this time!!!

There is a chance the guy just screwed up crashed his car and got scared. A small chance, but there is a chance. So if he is not being charged, and the police did not find any booze, why ask that question.

How is Lovey stupid or Dishonest? The police did not file any charges involving drinking and driving. Briggs ob told Smith he was not drunk. What is Lovey supposed to say? Ignore the cops and his player? What happened with briggs is shady, but there is no solid proof to prove the claims he was drunk.

When i read the title of this thread i thought it was going to be about Lovie having Rex Grossman as his starting QB STILL. Lmao. Briggs was smart. He was drunk and left so the Cops would ever know he was drinking. Everyone knows it.

Dishonest. He knows that Briggs was probably drunk. He doesn't want anyone asking his players questions so he's bringing the attention on himself. It's a good coaching move as long as you have job security.

No, you really don't. The police need evidence to arrest, but neither the police nor the media require evidence to ask questions. A reporter who didn't ask about alcohol involvement in the crash would be a bad reporter. When Lovie asked him how he got to that he should have replied "it was a one-car accident at 3am and he ran. It's an obvious conclusion."

Lovie Smith is not in the business of implicating his own players to the press. I am getting tired fast of PFT. They started out as a cool sight for football fans, with a charming mix of humor and irreverence, but since the addition of Saint Michael David Smith have transformed themselves into a crusading outfit trying to right the cultural wrongs of the world through the medium of pigskin. Get over yourself, PFT. Lovie Smith is paid to coach the Bears and win games, the police are paid to investigate crimes.

Re: Is Lovie Smith Stupid or Just Dishonest?

Hey the guy cleaned up the blood so there was no murder.......... Of course he was drunk. Of course he cleaned out the evidence....I Dont think thats a stretch Lovie...But as you are a well known racist who would defend any black for anything, I expect you to be so dishonest.

No, you don't. You need proof and evidence to convict someone of a crime in a court of law. In the real world common sense suffices.

Where did that come from? I'm not a big follower of Lovie Smith, but I did live in Tampa while he was there. Coincidental, I live in Chicago now, where he now coaches. I never have heard that he was a racist. He also was in the Superbowl last year, and we all know the media exposure that that game brings, yet, I don't remember any talk about racism. Like I said, I'm not a big follower of him, but that's a fairly strong statement to make. Maybe you can follow it up with a few references.

In the real world you need proof before you can make accusations or claims that might be taken serious by a guy like lovie. If not he is going to give you the answer he did all day and twice on sundays. Better?

That's great, but Lovie saying it's a "stretch" is being a tad disingenuous. It's a reasonable question.

Does anyone here actually think Smith would say "Sure, he probably was drunk!???

oh come on...

"I'd rather not talk about that until we have all the facts."

Thank you. The reporters have to ask the question, and in asking they understand that the coach doesn't have to answer. Lovie would have avoided some trouble with a simple, "I can't comment on that."

Seems so simple.

A simple I don't know would have been fine.

Huh? Wha? Scared of what?

So if he is not being charged, and the police did not find any booze, why ask that question.

Because you're a reporter and that's your job.

What happened with briggs is shady, but there is no solid proof to prove the claims he was drunk.

Reporters aren't lawyers or cops. Two very different things. Reporters are allowed to speculate.

I can imagine a couple of instances that are perfectly legal that don't involve alcohol and would make a person leave the scene. lol

For instance, imagine that Lance is a cross dresser and while reaching down to adjust the g-string panties he's wearing, lost control of the car and went off the road. Now, he could either stay there and explain why he's wearing a dress or he could go home. I'll bet most people would flee. lol... BTW, it's perfectly legal. lol

Another instance would be that Lance was with Lovie's daughter and needed to get her home before Lovie found out. lol

The reporter did his job the right way. Lovie doesn't have to answer it. That's his prerogative. But getting on the reporter for doing his job is pretty dumb, especially when your defense of your player is lame.

As for the guy that accused Lovie of being racist, wouldn't you say it's racist to accuse someone of defending another person simply because they were black? That's racism right there.

Good ones!

It is also plausible that Briggs may have been abducted by aliens at 3 AM. When the tractor beam pulled him out of the Lamborghini, the pilotless sports car hit the tree.... After numerous sexual experiments in the space craft, the aliens then returned Briggs to his home.

Re: Is Lovie Smith Stupid or Just Dishonest?

Well, there kinda is some evidence supporting the accusation. Now it's only circumstantial evidence so it wouldn't hold up in a court of law but we are not in a court of law, are we..?
There is a chance the guy just screwed up crashed his car and got scared. A small chance, but there is a chance. So if he is not being charged, and the police did not find any booze, why ask that question.
Because it's a legitimate question. There may not be proper evidence for a criminal conviction but those of us living in the real world know that where there's smoke, there's usually fire.

I think it sets a really bad example, Pony. I don't like the PFT high horse either, but if you don't want your players to think that they can run around doing whatever they want without consequences, you shouldn't reflexively take their side in situations like this, ESPECIALLY when it's overwhelmingly clear that a serious crime took place.

Briggs could have killed someone. Drunk driving in a car like that is not a minor crime; to me it's a BIG deal, and Lovie should recognize that it's bigger than football.

Can you imagine if it was a Patriot that BB would say that? I think he'd be more responsible with how he treated what (I think) is a serious and well-founded allegation.

Briggs Update
http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=2994880

LAKE FOREST, Ill. -- Chicago Bears linebacker Lance Briggs said he panicked after he crashed his new Lamborghini along a highway early Monday morning and initially reported his car stolen after abandoning the mangled vehicle.

Briggs, speaking to reporters after practice on Tuesday, said he called a tow truck after leaving the scene and then reported his car was stolen.

"When it happened, the first thing I did was, obviously, I panicked," Briggs said. "I didn't want there to be a big scene there. And so I left the scene. When I left, I called the tow truck. I also was startled, and I called to report that my car was stolen. Within probably 10 minutes, I called back and accepted responsibility for what I did because it was ridiculous in the first place."

Illinois police found the abandoned vehicle, which had hit a light pole and a concrete bridge support, alongside the Edens Expressway on the city's North Side around 3:15 a.m.
