Expected, but good news nonetheless.

Nice reaction time HPF!

I am interested in seeing Merriweather get more reps at FS on Thursday, the kid can really lay the lumber and Safety looks to me his more natural position.

Ps. For the record, despite anything I may have said in the past I pick August 27 as the day Samuel reports to camp.

what can I say..it's been a slow monday!

Looking forward to the BB presser today...

:D

I will save you the time....

"BB we are getting towards the end, tough match-up this week against the Giants. Eli Manning is the best QB I have ever seen and really the Giants have no flaws...."
"Looking at the tape there were some good things but it was far from perfect, we really have a lot of work to do get ready for the Jets in week 1..."
"Tough time of year we have to get below 75 by Tuesday, it is never easy..."
"Samuel is a good player but he is behind. It is not like he can step in and play tomorrow, some of the other players have 3+ weeks or practice. If it was that easy we wouldn't have camps..."

BB on the Brady baby "What a fanstastic event! I wish it would get more publicity. Our entire team talks about it all day. The only other things we like to discuss more is the the Michael Vick saga and Barry Bonds....
I asked McDaniel to design a new play called "Brady Baby". Tom is free to live whenever he wants to ensure his end of the parenting bargain is being met. I can't wait to see the pictures..."

Meriweather's sure tacking really stood out last week. With Samuel, Hobbs and Gay at CB I imagine Meriweather will get more time at Safety now although we're kind of stacked there for this year with Harrison, Wilson, Sanders and Meriweather - not complaining about that depth, of course.

Wilson is apparently hurt a little bit. The depth falls off pretty quickly at FS, Merriweather is the long-term answer and personally I think he could even take reps in game 1 and be ok.

Agreed with what you say across the board. I don't expect Geno back unless he takes a deal very friendly to the team. We know we can't count on him being healthy and I have a feeling Meriweather will be better than him soon as Wilson's instincts as a Safety have always been questionable to me having been a CB through college.

Meriweather most affected

3 solid corners means that it will be tough for Meriweather to see the field at CB, and I think we need to get his speed and athleticism on the field. With Wilson appearing to suffer yet another leg injury while chasing a WR, and Sanders better suited for SS in the long run, FS looks like the opening. Unfortunately, he has been training exclusively at CB, so it would take a switch and new learning curve for him to appreciate the responsibilities.

Really? I don't think so at all. What do you mean?

We drafted Meriweather as a safety. He will play safety. As we require from any of our free safeties, Meriweather can also play nickel. Wilson's injury just emphasizes the fact that we need Meriweather to learn what it means to be a NFL starting free safety.

I was out of town this weekend so I'm a little short on news and didn't realize Wilson is hurt a bit. He needs to get back in, I am confident that he won't beat Meriweather out for his Safety position if he opens the door for Brandon.

Oh, and on the point of the thread :

WELCOME BACK ZANTE.

We would've been fine w/o him, but obviously we're better with him. I don't think he starts the season opener though.

I can't tell if you are being sarcastic, but I am not so bright and will explain my view on the safety positions.

In order of depth, players in Italics have questions that are explained in more detail below.
SS - Harrison, Sanders, Mitchell
FS - Wilson, Merriweather, Willie Andrews, Baker, Gay, James, Wesley

Mitchell - discussion was about FS but looking at SS for a second, Mitchell looks to be a Larry Izzo type, good on special teams unknown and likely not very good on the regular defense

For FS I see Wilson (with his own set of issues) and then a bunch of questions:
  • Merriweather - should be able to pick things up quickly but has no pro experience and has spent the majority of camp at CB
  • Willie Andrews - starting to emerge, I like this kid's tougness and think he could play the slot or backup FS in a pinch. But very unproven
  • Baker - no lock he is on the team, more of a special teamer. Although I did read he played 4 years of FS at Tennesee
  • Gay - apparently can play Safety but I am not sure I want him taking too many reps at the position. With his China doll body I don't think he would hold up
  • James - May not make the team, not sure he has ever played Safety but may be able to make a Hawkins like shift in the twi-light of his career. Doesn't appear to be very physical
  • Wesly - career special teamer, played CB in college. I don't see him making the roster
  • Hawkins - I guess he is on speed dial but lets hope we don't have to go there

I think he will be on the field for the first defensive snap - but regardless of that technicality, I would bet a LOT of money that barring injury he's either #1 or #2 in snaps on the field among CB for game one. He's supposedly in fine shape, knows the defense and has almost two weeks until game one.

For those re-arranging your depth charts, keep in mind that Wilson apparently got hurt against Carolina (read that he came up lame on Colbert's long TD reception and didn't see action again after the extra point).

Who knows if his injury is serious or not, but it could be a factor.

Best case for me is that Harrison and Meriweather start on opening day, Meriweather plays well enough to keep the job and Geno's injury is minor enough that he's ready to play as/if needed. Meriweather may not have the size to hit like Rodney but given that Force = Mass * Acceleration, I think his Acceleration into the receiver can equal what Rodney's does - he'll never quite get there with the Mass piece though ;)

No matter how it plays out these are good decisions now it is the best of the worst, instead of the least worse of the worse... this is an amazing team..
